Serger threads "grinning"
I have a singer professional 14U13 overlocker i bought second hand. when i try to use the "overedge stitch" (2 thread overlock stitch) the fabric always pulls apart and shows the threads. no matter how much i rethread or adjust the tension it doesn't fix it. please help!

This looks almost like a "faux flatlock" decorative serger stitch

It is a faux flatlock minus two threads. The tension is all off since doing that requires pretty big tension adjustments to get this effect. When doing this, I normally fold the edge over itself so there's a bit of overlap inside the stitching and run a matching thread down to really secure it and lock it down.

The 2 thread overlock is for finishing edges (therefore "overedge stitch"), not for construction. Just for the reason you discovered. It's not solid enough for anything more than to prevent fraying or maybe a rolled hem.
