In Red Dwarf, it's shown in the future that not even death will free you from your job because they'll bring you back as a hologram.

I think they are only brought back to keep the crew happy. They’re light projections who can’t even pick up objects.
It’s not like they are so short staffed they need a smeggin’ hologram to fill clerical roles.

I'm showing how much of a nerd I am, but he's the navigator, and they brought him back as a hologram because he's essential personnel.

They’re kept for their expertise too.
Since Holly can only sustain a single hologram, I think the highest ranking deceased officer would be brought back.
It was only Rimmer after the accident because Holly’s main concern was keeping Lister sane, the mission had already failed.

Do hologram farts smell? Can holograms smell farts? There is a lot of undiscovered science in this area.

I'm pretty sure they can smell in general. On the other hand, he lives with Lister

Holly probably turned that feature off...... Doing anything else would be cruel

Rimmer was unable to touch or taste anything, so we can assume he can't smell either. He once hijacked Lister's body and binge ate until Lister grew man boobs.

That's why the ship on Red Dwarf is called Roko's Basilisk, which of course is an anagram of ouroboros, if you borrow some R's and O's from the future and leave the extra letters in the past.
