r/spiderbro is a place to celebrate the companionship between spiders and people. Frequent identification requests undermine this core purpose by turning r/spiderbro into a utility that other subs are better suited for ( r/spiders , r/whatsthisbug , r/bugidentification )

I spotted this lady trotting across my kitchen floor and I had to evict her to the flower bed, hopefully she finds a good place to make a web

I think it's their mating season or something. I've seen half a dozen in the last couple of weeks.

I wanted to use the shower so I grabbed the line. It didn’t react. I noticed it was missing a rear leg.
I moved it gently over to some shelves and was about to set it down when it seemed to wake up. It ran up the silk toward my fingers quickly. I was surprised and dropped it an inch or so onto the shelves.
It had a hobbling gait that I thought was ridiculously cute, as it ran as fast as ever to a hidden spot.
I’ve never seen such obvious panic in a spider before and thinking about it, my face crinkles up in a look I think says, “Oh you poor cute little thing, I’m sorry.”

Yesterday I was gifted a black widow spider that somebody I know caught and gave to me to keep as a pet. This definitely came out of nowhere, but I did a bunch of research and decided I wanted to keep her, and I’ve become really attached to her and enthralled by her already!
She is currently living in a secure 4x4x8 acrylic container with branches in it that she can build off of, and is about 8 feet from an east facing window and 5 feet from a north facing window (both are mostly covered by blinds too, although my entire apartment is rather bright). I would be appreciative of any and all care tips for her, as I want to give her a good happy life and so much of what I’m reading online has been contradictory.
Thank you so much!

Did you know you’re sharing your bed with thousands of tiny arachnids? 🧹
Quinten Geldhof, also known as Microhobbyist, shows how a single spider can produce up to seven different types of silk, each with its own job. Sturdy dragline silk builds the web’s frame, while sticky blobs of silk set the trap for prey. Pound for pound, it’s up to five times stronger than steel, and a strand long enough to circle the Earth would weigh just 4.4 pounds! What would you use spider silk for?
