DISCUSSION Anyone else think the RSI Hermes is seriously underrated?

Post image

I feel like the Hermes deserves more appreciation. The design looks fantastic, the 288 SCU cargo grid is actually practical, and that rail-mounted tractor beam is such a good idea.

It's one of those ships where the overall layout makes sense for what it's supposed to do. I love that RSI managed to make a medium freighter that looks this good while still giving it some decent firepower.

Obviously the rear entrance could be better, but I think the Hermes gets a lot more right than wrong.

Curious what everyone else thinks. Is the Hermes still one of your favorite medium haulers, or have you moved on to something else?

Well... I have to say that getting Mk5 makes it hard to keep my Hermes, but it is definitely one of my top 10 ships in SC...

28

u/Disastrous-Power-699 6h ago

I think the Hermes is a much better pure cargo ship overall though.

10

u/Walltar 6h ago

Yeah... agreed. Problem is that at that size I am not doing any serious hauling. I will probably use Galaxy or Ironclad to do pure hauling and Hermes only to do small transports, like when I need to get materials from refinery.

But I will wait... maybe there will be a purpose for it and I will keep it.

u/crazy0ne 3h ago

I'm in the same boat, waiting on the Galaxy, have a Hemes, and tested the Constellation mk5. Honestly, I did the same set of chained cargo hauling missions using the mk5 and then the Hermes and the Hermes was the better experience.

The hang up with the Connie was that nailing the placement for efficient loading is way more tedious than with the Hermes. Over repeated runs, the Hermes is easier to get in and get out.

If I were doing just a one off haul, sure the mk5 is good enough, but focused on cargo specifically the Hermes has the superior workflow.

2

u/Disastrous-Power-699 6h ago

I use mine as my go-to for commodities. Prevents me from risking an enormous amount, but big enough for great profit.

u/PuzzleheadedMaize911 4h ago

Tbh Zeus is better for those small hauls. Hermes is in a strange spot.

1

u/Walltar 4h ago

I had CL but changed it to ES... ES is basically my go to shuttle when I am doing stuff like ASD and so on. Love that ship. Only wish that it would also be little more useful in a fight. Maybe they will make Mr interesting.

u/TimeTravelingChris 5h ago

What do you mean "at that size?"

5

u/Walltar 5h ago

What I would call a medium Hauler... Ships somewhere around 300SCU on grid. I don't usually transport cargo off grid, so only count what I can securely store.

But when I decide to spend some time doing hauling missions I usually use ship at least. 500SCU on grid. Right now it is Railen, but I will most likely switch to Galaxy.

And when I do multicrew hauling, I usually take Ironclad. Because that one is too large to load alone.

Size 5 ship

u/Rost_Brat_Wurst 6h ago

Upgraded the Hermes to the MK5; I am happy with it.

8

u/socal01 TAC 6h ago

Yup I did the same and I like the MKV better than my Hermes.

7

u/Sneemaster High Admiral 6h ago

I did the same. I didn't like the tiny cargo door on the Hermes, and I can get an ATLS for tractoring cargo if I need to. Also the Connie Mk5 isn't that much slower and has two Size 3 shields vs the smaller 4 size 2 shields, so it's much tougher. You also can't beat four size 5 pilot guns on the Connie.

I upgraded my Andromeda... now thinking about what to do with Hermes.

1

u/Successful_Line_5992 3h ago

easier to load cargo

5

u/citizensyn 6h ago

The speed gap justifies hermes tbh

4

u/Walltar 6h ago

Right now yes... but once they finally launch new flight model, then we are going to be left with 10m/s speed gap, which is hardly something big.

8

u/citizensyn 6h ago

Maneuvering is a huge part of landing

Landing is a huge part of cargo

Hermes will always be a better cargo ship than connie

3

u/Walltar 6h ago

I am not trying to say that Mk5 is better... What I am saying more in in the line of "Is Hermes so much better that I will keep both, or not?" And right now I am not sure. Time will tell.

2

u/reboot-your-computer polaris 6h ago

The Taurus MK5 should easily exceed the Hermes, so I wouldn’t say it’s always better than a Connie. The Connie’s are a line, not just 1 ship.

1

u/citizensyn 5h ago

Taurus SHOULD shit on hermes but doesn't for the above reason

-2

u/TimeTravelingChris 5h ago

I keep hearing the Taurus will also have the snub and if it does... no thanks.

2

u/Armored_Fox ARGO CARGO 6h ago

Pretty sure there's going to be manuvering downsides to the larger ships.

6

u/AirSKiller 6h ago

The Hermes is like half the size and much easier to park on outposts to load up.

I think they have overlapping roles but aren’t directly comparable. If I’m just running cargo I much prefer taking the Hermes.

7

u/Walltar 6h ago

There is not that huge size difference... But Mk5 got so great landing gear. I actually find that I can land it anywhere with ease, since the neck can stick out of the landing pad with ease.

I am definitely keeping Hermes for now, though. Time will tell if I use it or if it will become a hangar decoration waiting for upgrade like M80.

1

u/Snake101st Colonel 3h ago

Are you not liking the M80 anymore? Haven't played for a while, really since the most recent weapon rebalance

3

u/Croue 3h ago

The M80 is a sidegrade ship that doesn't do anything particularly better than other ships that can accomplish similar things while being better at tons of other stuff. The Shiv for example, significantly more maneuverable with more loadout flexibility, an actual cargo grid, negligible DPS difference, and better missile payload. The M80 is just the heavy fighter of choice for people that prefer shoot n scoot jousting over orbiting. It goes fast in a straight line and has two S5 guns, and that's pretty much the bag. So unless you happen to enjoy the M80 specifically, there isn't much reason to have one over something else that can fulfill the same role and more.

2

u/Snake101st Colonel 2h ago

Yeah, makes sense - I liked the M80 a lot when I used it as a fast heavy hitting shoot n scooter for PvE

2

u/Walltar 3h ago

It was kind of impulse buy... Found out pretty fast that it isn't ship for me and switched to redeemer and now centaurs.

But since I got 150 bucks discount on it I don't want to just melt it.

-4

u/TimeTravelingChris 6h ago

The length is 20% less and the Hermes can hold almost double the cargo.

10

u/Nelbrenn 6h ago

How is 288 SCU double 240 SCU?

-6

u/TimeTravelingChris 5h ago

Because if you are only using the Hermes to carry 288 SCU you are doing it wrong. It can easily carry 400 just using the middle isle and entry, and some people go way beyond that.

When I commodity trade I'm usually at 416.

3

u/Phaarao 4h ago

The MK5 can also carry cargo easily offgrid

2

u/FeralRaccoon1973 Gold Plated 600i 4h ago

It doesn't matter which ship I'm using, I'm OCD about only using the grid to lock down boxes.

0

u/Croue 3h ago

If that's the logic you're using, the Mk5 carries significantly more cargo than the Hermes, lol. You can stuff the Mk5 full, even down into the missile bays if you really wanted to. Not to mention the cargo elevator being so much more convenient.

1

u/roadrunner_68 1h ago

Some people don't like using off grid which is completely fair but it isn't the same at all. The Hermes you have all that space down the middle and the off grid space by the ramp that you can easily put creates.
On the Mk5 you have to load the ramp, send it up, go around and get in using the other lift, take the crates off and then go back down and load it again, no one is doing that.

2

u/reboot-your-computer polaris 6h ago

Melted my Hermes for the Centaurus and I have no regrets. You lose 48SCU of cargo grid but the rest of the package makes up for that easily IMO.

-2

u/TimeTravelingChris 6h ago

You don't lose 48. That's just the grid. Hermes can fit over 400 without trying.

35

u/tfarrister youtube 6h ago

Yes! Such a good hauler. I picked up the Centaurus and wondered whether a melt was on the cards. But decided no, hauling is just so good with the Hermes.

10

u/AWerewolfDad 6h ago

Listen to my brother in Hermes. He is wise and super handsome.

But yeah the Hermes is a truly underrated ship. It’ll do a lot of mid to high level PvE, too. It’s one of the best ships in the game.

3

u/FaolanG Multi-Moderator 6h ago

It really is a great hauler. I melted mine but I look at it every now and again. I have a Hull B now that fits the role fine but the ease of use for the Hermes is not to be understated. I like the one floor easy in easy out, simple loading and unloading.

I used to drop ground vehicles for org ops and such but now that my playtime dropped I’ve been reconfiguring the fleet and may pick one up for shits. I don’t know why the ladder in the Asgard annoys me so much but it does lol.

19

u/Purple_Location_2529 6h ago

For the Hermes, if it wasnt for that tiny rear door, it m8ghtve been more popular

4

u/Special_Cicada6968 5h ago

100% my issue with it. I'll take the elevator of the Mk.IV or the pop top of the Ironclad over that narrow little entryway.

8

u/PanicSwtchd Grand Admiral 3h ago edited 2h ago

It’s a flying workshop if you want it to be…slap some fabricators and stuff inside and you are good to go.

With all the furniture and cabinets they’ve been making available the Hermes is a very nice canvas for a makeshift utility ship.  Weapons cabinets and seats and you got a dropship.

It’s the embodiment of jack of all trades and master of nothing like the C1 was. There are better ships but it can do a bunch of jobs well enough.

3

u/ROPS-Lazarus 2h ago

You make a very interesting point

2

u/PanicSwtchd Grand Admiral 1h ago

I thought the Hermes was kind of pointless until a buddy showed me his setup. It was a perfectly serviceable hauler but most of the other haulers did it better.

My buddy pointed out, however, that the Hermes is a large open cargo grid that is airlocked and portable. When all the fabricators stuff came out, he just started storing his crafting mats and fabricators inside it and do what he needed to there.

8

u/Crazy-Nights 6h ago

I love mine though I agree the back door could be a bit bigger

6

u/MarkyMarkFr RSI Galaxy 6h ago

It is very good as a hauler, but the Connie MK5 just took it's place as it's (almost) capable of hauling as good and also better at fighting

I upgraded my Hermes for the MK5 but I loved every second with my Hermes!

4

u/Blood-Wolfe Asgard Enthusiast 6h ago

I enjoyed my Hermes until I got the Railen so my Hermes became a Centaurus.

1

u/Roden11 3h ago

5

u/SortaBeta 6h ago

The Hermes is what the MSR wishes it was

5

u/AbnormallyBendPenis STAR-SQ4V-RFQ9 6h ago

I upgrade it to the Mk V. Primarily due to the back door being such a pain to load and unload when it’s nearly full.

the Hermes elevator is always unlocked to ANYONE.

That alone means I won't haul with it.

The small entry is the downside. I like it tho personally and have one. Plus it is a little slow. But looks good.

1

u/RenKrios Super High Admiral 4h ago

It should be faster given the vulnerability of its engines. It's my only gripe about it. Easily one of my favorite ships.

4

u/DetectiveFinch Smolaris enjoyer 5h ago

Love the exterior looks of the Hermes, but I think the interior design is too bland. The small cargo door is still a problem in my opinion, even when the moving tractor beam is working as intended. For me, the Mk.V is a much more attractive ship, more multi role capable and I really feel at home in the interior with the windows and the nice habitation area. It's almost like a miniature Normandy from Mass Effect.

2

u/NackteElfe 2h ago

The small cargo door doubles the loading time for me and is the reason I stopped using the Hermes. It will be the next ship to be ccu ed. Which is unfortunate because I live everything else about a ship. But since Auto loading hardly is a thing and I am not interested to spend 90% of a haul in my hangar that ship has to go.

3

u/itsRobbie_ 6h ago

I find myself only needing and/or wanting to use my raft, c2, and IC personally

3

u/charmin_7 5h ago

I like the Hermes for its range, a well done cargo grid (no crude numbers) the simple internal layout and general fun to use. But yeah, the Smolaris is hart to beat.

5

u/_ersin 6h ago

If it was able to land Medium hangars. Damn... Too bad..

4

u/realRaiderDave 6h ago

Its my main ship. I love it. Its the ship bound to my gamepackage. Its beautifully done inside and out. It has range for days. Might not be the best fighter, but certainly not the most easy target.

I cycled alot of ships with my store credit. But the Hermes is by far my favorite.

The available paint jobs arent so great, but the default pain job is amazing as it is.

2

u/Mintyxxx That was just noise 6h ago

It's a good ship, it does what it needs to and can survive a beating (though it will come away scarred). Upgraded mine to the mkV though as I have a Hull B for hauling

I Got the Hermes when it released. Became excited about the Hull B and upgraded to the B. But last night I realized I don't like loading or flying the Hull B so I melted and bought back my Hermes. I feel its better to fly, load, and overall use.

3

u/Appattamus 6h ago

I've only flown one a couple times as a rental, but I wasn't impressed. It gave me an overall "meh" feeling. To each their own though.

2

u/vestara22 6h ago

Yes! Its armor is tough even if shields don't last as long.

Its a great blockade-runner type of ship and the rail is the stuff of dreams! I pretty much outgrew the freight gameloop of SC, but it holds a special spot for me while I was waiting for my Mk5 Constellation.

The hermes is fast and wide in a good way too!

2

u/BuckarooBanzai42 6h ago edited 5h ago

Absolutely, I've loved my RSI Hermes since upgrading my Zeus CL to it. It's not meant to fight, just taking cargo from point A to point B. And it also looks amazing! Ever since seeing the Apollo, I had wished that it had a cargo variant, so when the Hermes was released it was an immediate buy for me.

But, I despise the rear entrance. For a cargo ship, it should have been given better options for loading cargo. The sliding tractor beam helped, though, and I love using it.

Now with the Mk5 that outclassed it in every way, I'm torn about upgrading. I like the smaller size and look of the Hermes over the Centaurus, but the Centaurus is going to survive longer if I do run into a few enemies.

2

u/LiveAus Anvil Carrack Love Association 5h ago

Only downside is the small cargo hold door. Otherwise is the best medium hauler in my book. You can fit 400 scu of cargo on that spacious hold and the mobile tractor beam works like a charm.

2

u/RecklessCreation 4h ago

i really like the hermes, i like the cut and dry no BS 'new' rsi style interiors (same with aurora MK2, and meteor, and now the MK5). I doubt i would have given it a proper shake if I hadn't won one. i'd be fine with it being my only pledge ship (it's not, and i'll be upped at some point)

I'd LOVE to see something between meteor and hermes, RSI cutlass basically lol

1

u/PopRap72 oldman 2h ago

What BS does the Zeus have? Genuine question.

•

u/Successful_Line_5992 7m ago

It's the only hauler ship that wastes space on a messhall and extra beds and it's cargo bay suffers. Cutlass black, c1 don't waste space and 3 beds has it competing with the old Freelancer Max. Even the RSI hermes has 2 beds. I love the New Cent and Polaris but the Zeus wastes a lot of space..... The result is it's cargo bay rated for 128 sometimes struggles to fit 100.

1

u/RecklessCreation 2h ago

your not wrong, i ment more the style design of of the meteor/hermes, and 4 pilot weapons.. even 2x s4, 2x s3, (did the zeus get pilot control of the remote turret?) . I don't hate the dorito(s), just perfer the design cues of the meteor/hermes

2

u/ComradeWinston Anvil Enjoyer/OG Backer 6h ago

Man, I just don't get the cult following of this claustrophobic frog. Its too big for what it offers and there are far too many ships with more/better features in the same size class.

If the Apollo hull remained in the Medium ship class, this would be an awesome little hauler.

0

u/roadrunner_68 5h ago

How can anyone say the Hermes is to big for what it offers it is one of the most space efficient haulers with interior cargo, Its just a cargo hold with a cockpit attached.

1

u/nooster 6h ago edited 5h ago

Nope. It's actually, even now, generally overrated. Its general design is poor. The tractor mostly a gimmicky mess that usually drops its freight before you can get it fully placed. The grid is poorly designed such that you have to fill it specifically, and can't easily fit medium to large boxes. The back door is dumb. I'd actually say it's one of the worst medium freight ships in the game.

2

u/Rttboom RSI Galaxy fanboy 6h ago

What are you on about?

0

u/Brightmist 5h ago

They're on point. Between RAFT and Railen, Hermes is irrelevant for hauling. Things like Connie/Starlancer are just better multi-role options.

2

u/roadrunner_68 5h ago

The Hermes blows the Starlancer out of the water, I have never hauled in a ship more miserable to load than the Starlancer Max.

1

u/nooster 1h ago

Uh. They didn't say the Starlancer was a better dedicated hauler than the Hermes. Said the Connie/Starlancer are better at multi-role. I absolutely think the Hermes sucks at multi-role.

Do agree the Starlancer can be painful af to load for sure.

-1

u/nooster 5h ago

Already been answered by @Brightmist. It's an irrelevant hauler whose design team I hope has been moved on to other things.

u/Skylar77_1 5h ago

The hermies is a lovely ship and is loved by many but suffers from the lack of defensive armorments outside that it’s a highly regarded ship and is recommended by many for getting industry moving

1

u/109ServerErrors 4h ago

It just reeks of cashgrab to me. Makes it hard to appreciate the ship

1

u/Apart_Pumpkin_4551 4h ago

A good ship, no doubt, attractive and well-crafted, but limited.

It cannot carry large vehicles, which is a problem; after all, this is a ship that costs 220 dollars. If it were 200 dollars or less, it would be a more viable option.

If you’re only looking for cargo capacity, there are better choices; if you want more versatility, there are also better alternatives. It sort of falls into a middle ground, but it remains a solid ship.

1

u/driley97 4h ago

I thought I was going to love it when it came out, but it’s sat around more than it’s been used for hauling. It’s good for exactly 1 thing and suffers from Zeus Door Syndrome (ZDS) where the interior could hold a Nursa or MTC but is too narrow to get one in. The Centaurus has effectively killed it for me and the rumored Taurus Mk V will likely boast a lot more room for cargo on grid than even the Hermes.

Despite this ranting, and the elevator issues it has, it looks good, and quite unique compared to all the Doritos we have been getting from RSI lately, so that’s the one thing it has going for it.

1

u/Star_Denizen 4h ago

Hermes would be a great ship if my fleet hadn’t already out grown it.

I will sometimes fly it for light cargo runs but I don’t do those often I typically just use a Railen.

1

u/TheCapyBearUh 3h ago

When was it ever underrated?

1

u/MKjUgf 2h ago

I bought the Hull B already and out of coincidence renting the Hermes (before that the Freelancer MAX).

I will not buy the Hermes as well. I think - without taking the actual time - I can load/unload the full 512 Hull B quicker than the 288 Hermes.

I also like the medium size better.

1

u/alvehyanna Aegis is Love, Aegis is Life. 2h ago

The opening is too small and it slows down loading and unloading to much. After owning an Asgard, then adding a hullb and moving to Railen...hermes is just to annoying as a hauler by comparison to any of those 3.

•

u/prudiisten commerce raider 56m ago

They didn't want people to use it as a drop ship for vehicles so their solution is to make the entrance slightly smaller than the vehicle they don't want to fit. They don't give too shits passed that.

1

u/BandagesTheMender 1h ago

You can fit over 500 in a Hermes, and pirates can't see it. You can also overload ship guns, which the bull B can't since it's not enclosed.

1

u/DUBBV18 1h ago

The thing that turned me off was the needlessly small cargo door. Contrived unrealistic design.

1

u/Professional-Fig-134 misc 1h ago

I love everything about it on paper. But I just don’t know. Maybe I need to spend some more time flying it.

•

u/nicarras 28m ago

It got a crappy door because we'd put a Nursa in it otherwise and we couldn't have that at the time this thing hit the pledge store the same time as the Apollos with their medbeds. Everyone would have just bought Hermes and Nursas.

If I had a Hermes I'd be melting it for a MK5 right now.

•

u/FirstDayPlaying 8m ago

Been thinking on turning my Taurus into a Hermes'

0

u/dokkababecallme 6h ago

The Hermes is too sluggish now that the MK5 exists.

I mean, it was always sluggish, but, the comparison makes it really obvious how badly tuned the Hermes is.

It should be a really snappy medium ship. Yes, it holds a lot, but the door is annoying and the shielding is relatively weak, being the whole "multiple S2" thing which is just really garbage on a ship that size.

I love the Hermes. Please don't get it twisted.

The hull shape, the interior, the cockpit elevator, everything.

I did, however, melt mine eventually because it's just so awfully slow on the accels. It's kinda miserable to fly. The weapons loadout is excellent though.

At least on the MK5, it's a big ass ship, so the accels make a modicum of sense.

IMO the Hermes should have something much closer to MSR accels.

Left to right - Hermes / Cent / MSR

2

u/Hobbymate_ 6h ago

It’s not underrated at all. I’d say it’s very popular among haulers. It’s the perfect baby of a Taurus and a C1 Spirit, if a tad slow.. but that cargo deck is huge and makes up for it

People outgrow the C1, Raft and Taurus straight into the Hermes/HullB and Railen/C2 now

..all the “raft-raft-raft” annoying chatter is gone, I love it

3

u/TweissInferno 5h ago

the Hermes is double the price of the Raft, and a lot harder to load.

Raft is still amazing for the price.

Upgrading my Hermes to a Railen is my greatest regret in my fleet.

Edit: and it seems like the Railen is a dead end without shelling out much more money or a lucky sale.

1

u/ThrowAway-47 2h ago

The need for CIG for an anti-Nursa nerf to door size is the only reason I don't see myself hauling with it. Mind you I'd be using it as a vehicle transport dropship if not for that problem so I guess it's needed.

I wish CIG would stop this war on respawns. It's been madening how often I park a ship somewhere and the ship just gets cleaned up rather than destroyed or otherwise eliminated. Gives me very little hope for persistence that water bottles stick around longer than my unbricked active respawn center ship...

0

u/Lad-Commander 1h ago

I disagree, if every ship that had cargo was made to fit a Nursa then the Apollo and other med ships would be useless, even more so than they are atm. And if they had to design every ship with space to fit a nursa then it invalidates drop ships and vic drop ships lile the Herc and ICA

The post said that it shouldn't, just like I said. The Nursa shouldn't even be a thought when designing ships. When an engineer makes a car he doesnt think, this should fit Shaq even though 99.9% of the population isnt even close to being over 7' tall. Im not against the Nursa because i get it, shit happens and you dont wanna respawn in Nyx when you were in Pyro 1 but the Nursa should not be a bullet point when making ships
