Startup Name / URL: BeAware, the d/Deaf Assistant https://deafassistant.com

Location of Your Headquarters: Detroit, MI

Elevator Pitch/Explainer Video: https://vimeo.com/678886593 - The BeAware app converts your iPhone to a free Alerting Device. It uses the in-built hardware to alert Deaf users of knocks on doors, baby crying for a deaf moms, sirens blaring for deaf delivery drivers. Earlier deaf users would have to purchase a separate "alerting devices" which would vibrate or flash LED's, something that they can do with this app now, even while it's running in the background in low power mode!

More details:- The app also performs highly performant Speech To Text in ~15 languages, even without an internet connection, designed to work great in the time of the pandemic. (Includes Arabic, Ukrainian, Chinese Simplified & Traditional, Spanish, French, ...)- The notepad feature allows users to type, or use pre-written phrases to display text to others who don't know ASL. It's super unique to where it allows the Deaf user to dictate the text through active audio and video calls!

Your role? Co-Founder

What goals are you trying to reach this month? Getting more active users, getting the word out there, improving based on feedback.

How could r/startups help? By providing feedback or referring our app to whom it might be useful. Try the iPhone Deaf Assistant app

Discount for r/startup subscribers? Did I mention it's free? Well you get it for free

•

u/Charly_ZA May 19 '22

https://deafassistant.com

That's awesome. My SO is deaf, so this functionality takes some stress off of me by not worrying about them missing something important and will be even more valuable in the future as we are planning on eventually having kids.

We're using Google's Live Transcribe app on Android, which includes sound alerts, but we'd be keen to check out BeAware if it comes to Android.

How well does the iOS speech transcription work with HoH voices? My SO doesn't get much use from the Android one because it's unreliable, which is a shame as he would like to use Google Assistant.

It seems like accessibility is a focus of big tech now. You offer a lot more besides just TTS/VTT, but aren't you concerned that Google/Apple will start implementing features unique to your app?

If you haven't already, please look at Google's Project Relate. It's incredible to see how we can use our tech to completely change the lives of others by making our communities more inclusive and giving them access to opportunities they were never offered.

Startup name: Point of Separation www.pointofseparation.com

Located: Breckenridge, CO

Pitch: We make healthy freeze-dried meals. All made from fresh whole ingredients. No preservatives, added color, or artificial flavorings. Made by hand, from scratch in small batches. Just add boiling water to the bag, and eat directly out of the bag, it opens up into a bowl! Shelf stable for up to 20 years.

We just launched end of April 2022. Our very first trade show, we sold out 511 bags in 2 days. We went into our 2nd trade show doing pre-orders, as the freeze drying process is lengthy, there we sold 371 bags. We are back ordered about 2-3 weeks now.

Selling only directly to consumers via our website or trade shows.

We just purchased an additional freeze-dryer, making it 3 total. And have a crowdfunded kickstarter to raise $20K to buy more freeze dryers.

We have done 0 marketing or advertising. Other than running a company Instagram (pointofseparation) with only 222 followers. We can't keep up with the demand on this low of scale- a good problem to have, I suppose.

My role is everything. I'm a 1 woman show. 100% owned and operated by myself.

I am looking to potentially speak with some investors.

As the labour shortage plagues the construction industry, and skilled positions continue to go unfilled, it's causing delays on projects; Furthermore substantial inflation across the board.

We have conducted in-depth market studies, and worked along side leading industry Univerisities and Colleges to create explore the market, requirements, and totality of the current labour shortage.

The problem: What has been found, in North America from 2022 to 2027, 597,633 workers will retire whom are registered Tradesman, or operate within a supporting role for the industry. According to the data, we will have estimated 416,722 individuals take up a trades position or supporting role. Now, estimated 681,749 positions will open up during this time. This leaves close to 190,000 positions unfilled. This study and data was collected through partnership with International Trades unions, and Construction associations in Canada and the USA.

Our solution: Development of accredited training programs, that are acknowledged by apprenticeship and training boards, and company's across the globe. To date we have developed in collaboration with an accredited Career college 7 accredited training programs and 29 vocational programs; Furthermore, will have an addition 30 prgrams estimated complete by year end. The programs that are currently accredited are: Human Resource Management, Project Management, Leadership for Managers & Supervisors, Office Admin, Business Admin, Construction Coordinator, Project Admin.

We also provide consultant services to Construction Firms. 39 of 39 firms that have engaged our Business Overhaul Program, have reporting profitability improvements to their bottom line in the ranges of 3.27% to 21.29%. Our Overhaul Program consists of taking the policies and procedures we have developed, specially tailoring them to fit their business starting with employees - providing training, production and quality tracking and implementing changes to facilitate productivity and quality increases; we then focus on sustainability - analyzing current policies and procedures, strategizing and revamping to save materials, become more eco, and be eligible for government grants, and then focus on profitability.

Through our development, we have built our website, an online learning hub, and are currently negotiating Development of a complete project management app/software which will allow virtual management and oversight to assist businesses from our office and ensure everything is completed properly, providing successful completion and on time on budget.

We are in negotiations with the Federal Government about developing an introductory to Careers in Construction program. Providing high school students with access to information about all the trades and supporting roles within the Construction Industry, How to become a registered apprentice or intern, and at the completion of the program get credits for attending a construction project with participating companies to take part in various trades of interest. Successful completion earn 5 to 8 high school credits.

We are looking for investors to further develop our training programs, and complete accreditation for completed programs. Ideally, we have become leading training professionals and are recognized industry wide. With the right investor, this business could go world wide. We're tapping in and providing the required training and skills to participate in a $19.2 trillion dollar North American construction industry.

To date, I have 4 other employees, and with the right investor, I could bring on 6 more and do easily 4 million in revenue this year. Within 24 months, and when the hub is fully established, all training programs done, and accreditation occurred on major programs, I have decided to offer franchising and want to grow into the USA, and Across Canada.

As we provide accredited programs, the Government recognizes our programs and students can obtain student loans to conplete, or through businesses. We offer training to individuals and businesses.

If you would like more information, please message me. I would be happy to answer any questions. We have an operating website, and have three large negotiations ongoing, one with the Federal Gov, and two with large oil sands firms: Suncor Energy and CNRL to establish training modules for on-site employees, and new employee orientations. We also have significant interest in the Project Management App I am going to have developed. We do it remotely now through email, however, organizing everything in one place, will allow ease or access and faster turn around time, easier monitoring. Time = money, and reduce our times by 30% allowing us to take on more projects. Individual programs range from $1800.00 to $36,019.00. Programs over $3000.00 are recognized by Government and are eligible for student aid financing.

Serious inquires only please.

That's a great idea and would be a game-changer with the right connections to pull it off. How have you developed your PoC?

I'm usually pretty sceptical of the promises of emerging tech that will "disrupt" the way we do things, but I think you could get much value in the future with MR/AR. Meta is already developing practical/affordable MR, photo-real avatars and full-body tracking. Imagine if you could jam out alongside your favourite celebrity as if they were next to you. Taking that a step further, I can imagine it would be disruptive for bands if you could create a platform for bands to practice/perform remotely.

Are the musicians happy with the production value and user experience it delivers? I'm assuming you are using a microphone and camera setup on each end and then sending it over something like WebRTC with Opus or another latency-optimised codec. There may be room for improvement by building a hardware solution that integrates directly with the mixers or sends MIDI signals directly, which I can imagine some higher-tier musicians's managers might prefer.

HMU if you are ever looking for a business-oriented CTO or technical co-founder.

Currently, I'm investigating finding a partner with industry experience/connections for an ambitious project that I can get personally invested in and run wild with.

Anyways, just my 2c. Good luck with your ventures.

Startup Name / URL: HouseofYards.com

Location: HQ: Chandler, Arizona, US. Remote team.
Elevator Pitch: Do you know less than 40% of lawn care business makes > $500K sales? Almost 70% of lawn care work is from residential homes? Landscapers need more sales, but often don’t have time to market the business. They may get a call, text from homeowners, go see the yard in person. Give a quote, the homeowners aren’t ok with it, they just wasted their time. This is not that efficient. As landscapers ourselves, we know it’s tough to signup new clients and manage the business at the same time. So, we created House of Yards. Homeowners simply enter an address online and instantly see a lawn care price quote and they can book online. No more travel to give quotes. Landscapers can now get more clients faster, make more 💰. We also help manage their business, save time, and get paid faster. Our local landscaping business grows so fast using our own software. We made it now available to all landscapers.

More details: Built our in-house software using smart, instant online quotes to get more lawn care clients. Local landscaping business became very successful. Our SaaS app can help landscapers:

💰 Get More Clients for Landscapers with a smart/instant quote & online booking system

📝 Increase productivity. Get instant new leads and booking notifications

📆 Organize better. Lawn care clients and crew all in one place

🚀 Job Done Fast, Get Paid Faster with integrated payment system

⏳ Save Time, less travel to give quotes.

💰 Save money designing, hosting your own website. We give you one.

My role: CFO.

What If Satellites Could Push Shipping Containers Between Planets? We aim to build the railroad to Mars!
Startup Name / H. Industries - https://h-industries.io (Brand new site went live last week!)
Location / Melbourne, Australia
Life Cycle Stage / Pre-Seed [1 Year FT Ops Status Report] (WIP Since Dec 2015!)
Pitch / [YT Dream Pitch] [Inspo Video - The Railroad To Mars] [Podcast Story Pitch]

Regular freight deliveries to Mars are inconceivable today and inevitable tomorrow. The idea of supplying astronauts with 2t containers of equipment, food and construction materials weekly isn't new, but until now was just too expensive. H. Industries founder has come up with a new, novel propulsion method that enables the idea using scaled down particle accelerator magnets (HMF Nb3Sn Pulse Magnets) in a tight knit swarm of satellites. The swarm structure acts as an electromagnetic spring and orbital launch pad to move large containers slowly and cheaply like the railroads of yesteryear. The founder is seeking risk taking dreamers for investors and angel donations to help fund the feasibility study as Phase 1 in a 4 stage plan! It will employ a team of seven engineers, physicists and project staff to validate both the design and business case, producing a manufacturable, mass producible schematic for trial in Phase 2 using SimuLink. The crowdfunding component is there to enable anyone to become part of the space industry and demonstrate groundswell to VC's! I am furiously filling out funding applications but every single share sold is a huge help. [Equity Offering]

Goals This Month / Get in front of a VC in person. My academic paper [podcast] was rejected twice as out of scope by the IEEE but they never found an issue with the tech, so I am applying for entry to a PhD and going direct to VC's and pitching to them: Bring a team of engineers, give me a whiteboard and I can prove to anyone how this tech works (I can tailor my presentation to any time limit or audience knowledge base). If I can hit 1,000 Youtube views and convert at least one reader in to our fourth investor then I have a much greater shot at getting the VC meetings.

Role / Founder [LinkedIn] - sole employee and all work to date (besides website and inspo vid) - idea, mk.0 design, business setup. Business Analyst / Implementation Project Manager by trade, mining engineer by training who worked in numerical modelling as a grad. Started the first scratchings on this in 2015 and now ready to go to market, been quietly uploading content for two years in preparation and implementing various improvements from the feedback. This is my story [article] [podcast].

How Could r/startups Help? By checking out the website and growing list of videos & podcasts. Trying to add so much fuel to this fire that the established launch service providers can't help but notice and we begin to scale starwards rapidly!
Thanks for reading, checking out any content and I hope you make the decision to support the vision today! If you have read all this then hit me up on LinkedIn and we can tee up a FaceTime session. Cheers, M.

Curious to know how you intend to build a weekly / daily railroad to Mars when you will have to time your deliveries with Mars’ orbit around the sun?

https://image.gsfc.nasa.gov/poetry/venus/q2811.html

Clarification:

Specifically referring to the following constraint: “In the nine months it takes to get to Mars, Mars moves a considerable distance around in its orbit, about 3/8 of the way around the Sun. You have to plan ahead to make sure that by the time you reach the distance of Mar's orbit, that Mars is where you need it to be! Practically, this means that you can only begin your trip when Earth and Mars are properly lined up. This only happens every 26 months. That is there is only one launch window every 26 months.”

Edit: typo and clarification

•

u/H_MJW May 18 '22

btwnastonknahardplce

Hey u/btwnastonknahardplce, apologies it’s taken me a few days to get back to you! The weekly then daily goals is our launch frequency target but the trip time is aiming for fourth orbit arrival which is about every 7.5 years. We aren’t targeting the closest orbital pass because the cargo is intended to be inert items - construction supplies, equipment and clothing etc. The goal of ramping up launch frequency is dependent on cargo flight path safety so hoping that a daily frequency is possible due to the distance both planets have moved along their respective orbital paths and collision risk is completely removed.

The 7.5y target lead time is pretty long but with a 20t cargo (loaded in pieces) the cost efficiency will eclipse rockets that are much quicker but have limited launch windows / capacity and need to make several trips to equalise the cargo mass transferred. The initial launches arrival will precede astronaut arrival even given the five odd years required to validate the system, build the business and transfer enough satellites to form an arrival swarm then conduct a sequence of test arrivals before real customer cargo transfer. The initial orbital path targeting isn’t too complicated and the system is accurate enough but the big risk that’s hard to predict is perturbation, which is a big factor for fourth orbit arrival. There is a degree of in-flight correction capability and the system will be modelled holistically multiple times to make sure we remove as much risk as possible.

In the end it is hoped that the test flights, regression analysis and a regular launch schedule will become routine orbital shipping lanes. All of this is wildly long game but the time to get started is now to beat the first crew. I would love to see Mars surrounded by GPS, weather and communication satellites well before anyone put boots on the ground. If we do this right, those first astronauts could spend a much longer time there and take a larger scientific crew to maximise the outcomes and safety of the trip - just like the Antarctic explorers of yesteryear.

Check out the articles below on how I came to the revised mass / arrival time, the 30 year plan and which six industries are already Mars ready! Cheers for the good question, M. (E: spacing)

After looking at your website, it's not entirely clear what your product is. I see you're promoting a Beta with a great offer, but what is the product? I feel a clear, one-liner would be very helpful, with the Beta offer tucked underneath perhaps.

Hi all,
We're super excited to share Moast with the community. We are digital marketers turned founders when we uncovered a major gap between DTC and traditional retail. The costs of launching an e-commerce store have come down dramatically (hi Shopify) but getting retail distribution is still incredibly challenging, time consuming and costly.
This forces shoppers to make purchases online without the opportunity to touch, feel and experience products. The brands on the other hand are stuck with high rates of returns and lots of pressure to setup retail distribution.
Moast helps brands get their product in front of their customers, wherever their customers are shopping from. Moast allows shoppers to see products in person through real customers before buying online. The magic happens through an interactive map white-labeled directly on a brands website.
Using Moast, brands have less pressure to open expensive retail locations, reduce their rate of returns, and eliminate the uncertainty in the online shopping experience.
Moast is changing the way brands sell products online! We're excited to hear all your feedback and support getting this out to the world.

What goals are you trying to reach this month?
The goals for this month are to gain feedback from the target audience, both landlords and tenants. What currently causes problems when trying to communicate to their landlord or tenant, and how could this be simplified and improved.

As well as this, continuing to work on the backend foundation for the MVP.

r/startups could help by providing feedback on the pitch, and eventually the landing page. If any of you have advice from a renting perspective, or know of a good way of getting feedback from landlords, please reach out!

Hi all! I am starting my own skincare brand Yui Skin in Belgium which is powder-based. This will be clean, sustainable, and easy to travel with as you don't need liquids anymore that can leak into your bag. The concept is that you put some powder on your hand, add tap water and rub your hands together to make a foamy texture. My first product will be a face cleanser.

What do you think of this concept?

I am trying to reach more brand awareness online, so if you know people who might be interested don't hesitate to spread the word!

Tenant Talk / tenant talk.io

Location : Ontario Canada

Tenant Talk aims to enable better communication between property managers and tenants. Tenants can be a pain and use multiple channels. We bring that into one platform to simplify things.

Currently at the release phase looking to get first paying customers.

I'm the solo founder doing everything.

Goal for June is 1 paying customer with 50 units or multiple customers with a total of 50 units.

Would love if people could give me advice on my marketing website and how to better use social media for those initial customers.

No discount (pre created) for this sub as I think most would not use the service though if someone wants to I'd gladly give a large discount in exchange for some feedback.

I have spent the past 2 years developing a formula on how to make affordable sports shoes (football shoes and running shoes) and can now make the same quality as Nike, Adidas etc but sell at half the price. I genuinely think this could be a huge business but I have no clue on how to market them. Any advice?
