Problem Valve employee scam?
I got messages from a valve employee saying I had to verify my account, I tried to unfriend and block, but they pop’ed right back up. I tried to change my password but this is the state of my steam now. How did this happen? Im sure I’ve been compromised somehow, but how do I proceed? I’ve opened a ticket with support, but I’m very clean, use 2FA and never used any third party thing..

I did block and ignore but they came right through again. And how did they make it say so on my profile?

Your account got hacked. Lock it up and create a support ticket to get ownership back and cgange password and all that

u/ScubaSteve3465 Apr 07 '26
Your account is probably compromised. You need to go into the settings and LOGOUT ALL DEVICES and change your password and enable steam guard.

Why are people downvoting you for just wanting help with not being scammed. Reddit is so cooked 😭

u/Ok-Tax1368 Apr 08 '26
Most logical answer would be that scammers dont want people to know how to kick them out so they downvote 🤣
If that's not the reason then i lost hope in humanity.

People are downvoting you for this comment buy upvoting the one saying to «ignore» when your account is compromised?🙃 reddit

u/LuckUnable Apr 07 '26
If it was sent by these fake employees, they are photoshopped pictures
8
u/itsrainingcows Apr 07 '26
No this is a printscreen from my phone of my own profile! That’s why I don’t understand it
10
u/MarkinhoO Apr 07 '26
Go to your steam guard, cogwheel, and disable all devices other than your phone, then change password again just in case

u/itsrainingcows Apr 07 '26
Thanks. Did this now

u/Public-Eagle6992 Apr 07 '26
I’d suggest also checking for suspicious activity in other accounts and potentially changing the password of your email account if that was how they got access

UPDATE: Ok finally managed to access my account, change password, log out all devices, change password again and then reset my 2FA. I found the breach to be back in february, about the time where this guy added me. He seemed like a regular dude i met in game, and after a short very non suspicious conversation; he was the one who told me I needed to get the steam guard, and I suspect this is where he managed to log into my acc and have been lurking since. The blue writing saying "this account is being verified by a valve employee" was actually just in my summary when I went into my profile editing. I totally fucked this up.

u/aPhantomDolphin Apr 07 '26
The fact you let some random dude set up your stream guard and nothing worse happened is nothing short of a miracle
7
u/itsrainingcows Apr 07 '26
I didn’t exactly let him put it up. He just asked if I had it and I said no, so he said I should put it up asap. I was tired and didn’t think much of it as he suddenly seemed a bit pressing about it. Thinking back on it, it took me like two or three tries to make it work, because I thought there was a huge delay or something with steam responding to my number-verification. Guess it turns out he somehow managed to somehow get my login info, and I managed to let him in by repeatingly agreeing in the app. Idk, that’s just what I suspected happened.
3
u/PurpleWedgeMan Apr 08 '26
Did you set it up by clicking on a link he sent?
2
u/itsrainingcows Apr 08 '26
No he never sent anything other than «tips». But looking back at logins, I apparently had a login from a different country around that time, so it’s my guess
4
u/PcGamerSam Apr 08 '26
Dude if i was you I’d re install windows on ur pc too because if you never sent him anything then how was he using information that was only displayed on your screen to login to your account?
3
u/JuliusCaelius Apr 09 '26
dude probably bought the OP's email credentials u/itsrainingcows Go through and change all your passwords AFTER you do a windows defender scan or other antivirus you might have...

Do yourself a favour and get more skeptical about strangers contacting you online, especially if they claim to be someone important (valve employee, bank employee, discord employee, police, etc).
No company is going to have an employee personally come to you to ask you to pretty please turn on steam guard or whatever. No company is going to have an employee call you and ask for your login info. Indie developers on Discord aren't adding random people en-masse to send their game to for testing. For most people, 9/10 times when a stranger is messaging you out of the blue you can assume safely that it's a scam, especially if they start asking questions about your account, ask you to click on any links, or download any files.

u/scalpingsnake Apr 09 '26
I am so confused as to how OP got their account hacked from this...
2
u/Dunmeritude Apr 09 '26
OP's account was likely already compromised when the hacker messages them. There are ways to intercept 2fa which is likely what they did with steam guard and why there was such a delay.
6
u/Duranu Apr 07 '26
That this account is being investigated nonsense is going to be in the Summary portion of your profile
Go to your profile, click edit profile, and then remove that all from the Summary Textbox, it's essentially your bio section and the scammer that gained access to your account put that there

yea its a scam valve will email you if this would ever happen but it doesnt its usually a scam and always when its just a user messaging

u/The_Viruss Apr 07 '26
And valve employees will never write to you in Steam Chat, it all goes through the ticket system. So do not click on links or pass on your data.
2
u/itsrainingcows Apr 07 '26
I knew from the first message that it was a scam so I didn’t talk with them. But apparently it was already too late

You might want to check your credentials at DeHashed and check for more breaches.

I knew from the first message he was a scam, so I didn’t believe him - removed and blocked. Then he suddenly popped right back up saying if I remove and blocked again I could meet consequences. So they had access to my account already and I knew I was kinda fucked.

u/mellow_420 Apr 07 '26
Never trust anyone who is messaging you. If something is actually going on they will reach out via email directly from official Valve.

u/shotxshotx Apr 08 '26
Valve employee accounts will have a banner at the top of the page stating its a Valve employee account.
They will NEVER reach out to you personally to get moderation things done, thru email from official valve support email instead.

u/itsrainingcows Apr 08 '26
I know, I never thought this account to be true, but it was already too late.

u/MildlyAmusedPotato Apr 08 '26
Make a steam suppoer ticket and ask for help from there. Go to your 2fa settings and revoke all devices. Allso change your steam and email passwords.

First things first: reset everything, even your recovery codes, just in case; then log out on every device, there is a specified page for this; and the final thing, wait for the support answer, don’t do anything else before the answer that will be sent to your email. Verify the origin of email and than double check it in Steam itself in Support section. How did it happen? You rather using pirated software or games that stole your cookies or you logged in on some gray site or you did something of this on your phone. There is no other ways to hack your account.

literally just happend to me, he chatted to me that my account was suspicious and was blocked for phishing and wanted me to verify my acc. thru a steam guard app, i literally clicked download on that app but smth looked off, i uninstalled it and asked him if its a scam, he threatened me if i would not cooperate he would delete my acc, he also deleted my GTA 5, i blocked him and unlogged all accounts from my account and changed my password, got GTA 5 back and all is going good now, i think it was because a guy on steam asked me to vote for his team on CS2 tournament

Valve employee accounts can be recognized if they have a badge from valve.
