cool moment on national television

The Milwaukee Brewers completed the sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium the other night..
The Brewers retreated to their clubhouse for the obligatory celebration consisting of champagne and beer flying all over the clubhouse etc.. PARTY!!!
Brewers manager Pat Murphy was invited back onto the field by the Fox broadcast team for an interview..
as he sat down with them he apparently off-camera said something to the effect that the clubhouse was so loud he couldn't hear anything..
a guy on the broadcast team, gesturing to the thermos container Murphy had brought with him and put on the table in front of him responded, "..after this drink you REALLY won't be able to hear us!"..
gestures again to the thermos and asks, "..what's in there Pat?"..
and Murphy says, "..uh, it's carbonated water.. I haven't drank, um, 1984.. is the last time I touched alcohol.."
the broadcast team obviously unaware that Murphy lived a sober life, presumed he was getting loaded in the clubhouse after the sweep clincher, because, well, when we win we celebrate right?.. and celebrating means getting drunk right?.. etc..
anyway Pat Murphy turned the tables in a polite dignified way, and the broadcast team, a little embarrassed I think, quickly then switched gears and moved on with the interview..
anyway I thought of all the kids who might be watching..
pretty cool.. hey kids, it's perfectly ok to play and win and celebrate without getting hammered..

The Brewers also have 4 alcohol free sections at American Family field which is awesome!

Considering how bad alcohol abuse is in Wisconsin it makes sense that they would also have more awareness about sobriety

As someone who lives in Wisconsin, alcohol abuse is very bad up here. Awareness about it? I wish there was more. Mostly it's denial about it.

It's ingrained in the culture. Most people don't realize it until the move away. But at the same time, it's nice to have a third place to go to and see regular people outside of work and family.

That is the coolest! There’s nothing worse than someone spilling beer on you and having to smell like stale ass all game. (Whether you’re an alcoholic or not!) Big props to the Brewers for making sections available. I love it!

Like you didn't anyway.

Yeah but I don’t mind if it’s from MY ass

No one else ever asks to move closer due to your essence, eh?

I think it should be "ASSSCENT" and not confused with rising.

There are about 5 other ballparks that I know of that do this as well, including Yankees, Redsox and Twins. I know the Padres and Dodgers have designated family sections where it’s more of a foul language and party free environment, but not alcohol free. Really good to see this implemented and hope it expands past these ballparks. The Padres will comp NA beer if you’re a designated driver and you can blow in their breathalyzer or something like that. Great post to bring awareness. Have a great day!

Makes sense, that man is 100% focused on good baseball. Glad he is out representing!

As someone who lives in Milwaukee and is a fan. I had no idea. I like Murph even more now.

Edit: seeing my flair on this comment, I just realized that yesterday was 500 days without alcohol for me. I don't care how much of a tool this makes me sound like, but I'm fucking proud of myself.

You don’t sound like a tool at all! 501 days is badass! Here’s to the next 499!

Bro you should be proud of yourself for every single one of those days! And every single one that comes after!

Sobriety is fucking hard sometimes, and you're doing it!

Buddy we are all proud with you.

As the parent of a 24 year old alcoholic, you SHOULD be proud of yourself! I’m hoping someday that I can celebrate my son’s sobriety instead of his funeral. You give me hope and I thank you.

Years ago, early in my sobriety, I went to a local ball game with a group. We went to the beer garden and all ordered their beers. I stepped up and asked for an NA beer, when I dug in my pocket to pay the guy quietly said "On the house."
Years later, I still remember that kindness. It's funny how sometimes the smallest good deed will live on.

Brewers give designated drivers and or sober people a free soda. You show I'd and proof of parking and get a soda voucher.

3

u/colinpublicsex 1h ago

The Cubs do this too! You don’t even have to be an actual designated driver, they accept “I’m taking the train home” as an excuse for a free NA drink.

u/Sethyboy42MO 2h ago

The Kansas City Royals do this too. Such a great program and an easy free item at the stadium.

Gotta say, the fact that it's the BREWERS makes this just a little bit better.

I work as a political reporter. And I've talked to a few legislators who either never drank alcohol or quit drinking. They have huge advantages over their colleagues who drink. Like, they can wake up early and come into a morning meeting feeling alert and awake. They also just see strategies and angles that others don't.

I bet the Brewers' manager is the same way.

Brewers also have a Mormon player who has gotten attention for celebrating with Fanta, not drinking alcohol to celebrate is becoming more recognized

Being from Milwuakee born and raised. Loved hearing this from Murph. He said somthing right after too.
“I dident have a problem” Then he looked over with a big grin insinuating he did.
Dude is a great guy. And Great coach.
We are finally gonna get one this year!!

Thanks for posting.

All the complaints about, or sometimes blaming, "drinking culture"...baffle me.

There IS RECOVERY CULTURE. All I have to do is FIND it and become part of it.

u/abaci123 Day 12,864 7h ago

Very cool!

6

u/pbrslayer 5h ago

As a Padres fan it hurts to have lost to them but at least the swept the Dodgers. It’s always cool to hear about sobriety among notable people.

9

u/ottawaoperadiva Day 825 7h ago

I wish we could hear more stories like this. I know alcohol plays a big part in celebrations but surely Pat Murphy isn't the only one in the sports industry that is sober...

Thank you for sharing!

Rediscovering my love of baseball plays a part in my sobriety. When I was in treatment, we were allowed to watch the World Series between the Jays and Dodgers. As heartbreaking as it ended up being (I'm a Blue Jays fan), I loved every second.

I was already cheering for the Brewers in this post season, but now I'm extra happy after learning this about Murphy. Might have to get a Brewers hat now!

I find that’s pretty cool and a little bit ironic too considering they’re called the Brewers 😄

A little off topic, but on behalf of baseball and the rest of America, thank you for dumping the dodgers.

Let's enjoy the World Series with a great carbonated water. IWNDWYT
