Anyone else miss NASIOC?
and forums in general? There was so much information and knowledge shared in such an organized way. You need how to on x? search subforum and keyword and guaranteed multiple threads documenting it. People posting their build journey on members gallery where you can follow every changes and upgrades made. Have a question on something specific and can't find the answer? Either post new thread or in an existing one and someone will always help.
We also had our local club forum where discussions were more organized, easier to coordinate meets, FS sub, and generally brought the community closer together.
Im not sure what happened why people suddenly stopped using forums, but reddit and FB groups are just not the same.

I miss forums a lot. Forums used to take up the space reddit did but it was distributed out into tens of thousands of different websites. You didn't have anywhere near the number of people who knew nothing about your niche joining and participating. You actually got to know the regular posters and those with knowledge far more because post count/rating meant that person spent that much time on that specific website and people actually liked what they said there. Now you can have someone with 100k karma, that they gained by posting "Trump bad" a thousand times, join a niche sub and larp as knowledgeable while hiding their comments.

I miss forums so much, the search function on reddit / facebook sucks so bad. When it comes to finding an answer to a specific question I always have a hard time now. I think what really took NASIOC out was when photobucket implemented their new model and a lot of those helpful form topics have now become useless.

Totally forgot about the Pb decibel. You're right, what they did really did a number on the internet.

I feel like the forums are much easier to organize by topics and sort through. The FB groups are just a single massive feed.
The MR2 forums are great for basic technical questions, however a lot of the "I recommend product X" is outdated because so much has been discontinued yet a few performance shops have release some kick ass items."

Absolutely yes. I saved my bacon with a buried post there once.
2007 Forester XT 5spd, I had open source flashed the ECU to remove some nonsense error codes, and the wire wiggled mid-flash and like a FOOL I turned the car off. Bricked it.
Forum post had a whole-ass wiring diagram on how to hook into the EEPROM on the ECU skipping the OBD2 handshake, and thereby allowing force-writing a clean image.
So I order the components and build the circuit to get busy with it. This is the night before the my second child’s due date, and I’m due to get my MIL from the airport in an hour.
Wire it up. Flash. Turn key. Ignition.
I couldn’t fucking believe it. Got my MIL 30 minutes later and said “don’t mind the ECU in the footwell there..”
Miss that car. Never said thank you in that thread. I should do that.
If you’re here, dudebro with the sick circuit diagram chops, thank you.

I never owned a WR Blue WRX of any sort, my first WRX was a 2018 STI Type-RA. I drove a 95 Impreza coupe until my BRZ in 2013.
Maybe you are thinking of Kos?
1
u/mrellz 1d ago
Ah apologies. The username I'm confusing you with was a member who was around since the beginning.
Ooooh. Wait a minute. My old ass brain is starting to kick in. I don't think he (you) owned a WR Blue WRX but I think he (you're) a photographer and have taken some amazing photos of other people's cars. I think the photos I'm thinking of were from a photoshoot.
Are you the photographer that I'm thinking of? Been on NASIOC since day #1?1
u/KostamojenX 1d ago
I've posted plenty of photos, but not actual photo shoots. I haven't been on since day one, my member number is 2272 and joined Sept 2000.

Do you remember the kid who wrecked his car on a bridge because it came into boost at 12.6mph and caused it to break traction?
It started in either General Discussion or the newbie subforum. The mods moved it to off topic and hilarity ensued.

Honda-tech in its heyday was pretty good, too. At one point it was one of the top 10 largest websites online by active users. You could ask a technical question and get multiple, real technical answers in minutes.

Forums still help me with my car. Because it's nearly 20 years old and a vast majority of the content was made when forums were still relevant.
Facebook posts turn up in searches sometimes, but they're way less reliable and rarely helpful.

Facebook posts turn up in searches sometimes, but they're way less reliable and rarely helpful.
Facebook comments and posts are like if you took Reddit posts and comments, kick them out of a stupid tree and they hit every branch on the way down, then you put them in a word salad blender

Sometimes these days I have a problem with my 1995 WRX and I search it and find a 17-year old thread about the same issue
then I notice that the OP was me when I was doing my one of my EJ20G swap & RHD conversions

no because I am still on some forums that are relatively popular and I was never really on nasioc much anyway
but also yes because I remember and miss the days when there were many popular forums about all kinds of stuff

They stopped using them because of places like Reddit and bookface. I do miss the old forum days for the same reasons others listed. LS1tech saved my ass quite a few times

Oddly enough that's how I found reddit, a post on Nasioc about the fappening brought me here. I don't really miss it, all of the regulars were expected to be treated like royalty most were just dbags.

u/EnvironmentalAct7012 2d ago
yeah, OT was pretty toxic but entertaining as a lurker to kill time at work. The cliquiness and arrogance of the basement neckbeards was pretty pathetic but it was their little hole in their digital world where they were somebody so I kinda get it.

u/froebull 1d ago

I love the online auto forums.

I really enjoyed foruns. It helped me learn more about vehicles when I first started working and modifying them. I could post asking questions and there was always more experiences people there to assist and guide into eh right direction. It was also great for meeting other people who lived locally. I belonged to many forums for vehicles I have never owned because I like cars and it was a great way to learn about different vehicles and their quirks.
One problem on forums I noticed is they got bought out by media corporations and became super bloated with ads and spam posts for stuff not even vehicle related.

u/-LaughsAtNothing 2d ago
When Reddit first came around, I jumped into it because I was tired of how a few groups of posters dominated forum discussions and were low key trolling and bullying a lot.
I didn’t appreciate the depth of knowledge and really miss it. Reddit’s anonymity just creates a different set of incentives, some good, some bad.
I hope forums come back once people start looking to escape bot traffic.

I've been a member since 1999. Before that, iClub was the place to be and then I believe the co-owners had a falling out or disagrement or something (I can't really remember). One dude continued on with iClub and the other formed NASIOC which we would call: NABISCO. Forums got me through builds, through tuning and through friendships. I still occasionally post in the local chapter forum but yah man! NASIOC was definitely my home for several decades.
The first part I ever bought on the forum was a GANZ FLOW intake for my 2.5 RS

On Nasioc, I'd post looking for advice in the middle of a project and a week later I would have 3 unhelpful replies and have either found a workaround myself or still be stuck. On Facebook, I post my question and get 10 replies within hours, a couple of which will actually be helpful. It's a shame to not be able to go back and see old threads full of useful info, but to be honest I often couldn't find useful info in the old threads. Combine Facebook with AI and YouTube and things are actually better on the whole now, in my opinion.

The move from forums to modern social media is what killed the internet.
