Nightmare Exorcist: Escape from the Nightmare Realm
zachron27.itch.iohttps://zachron27.itch.io/nightmare-exorcist-escape-from-nightmare-realm
Hey everyone! I wanted to share a passion project I recently finished called Nightmare Exorcist: Escape from the Nightmare Realm.
It's a retro, 1-bit monochrome horror RPG where you navigate dark, fog-choked corridors using a flashlight/lantern mechanic while engaging in turn-based tactical combat against nightmarish creatures like Cursed Minotaur and Grave Hounds.
If you love classic indie horror aesthetics, grid exploration, and survival mechanics, I’d love for you to check it out! You can play it right in your browser for free

Which horror game cover do you like the most?
Look at the 30 images of horror game covers. Choose one cover that you find the most interesting and appealing. Do not evaluate the game itself, its popularity, or its quality — focus only on the image. In your response, write a single number from 1 to 30 that corresponds to the chosen cover.

Inventory limits work better when the route back is part of the decision
A full inventory creates a more interesting problem when leaving something behind changes the next trip. Imagine finding ammo you can't carry: do you use some now to clear a hallway, leave it for later, or drop healing and gamble on reaching storage?
That decision loses a lot if the route back is completely safe. Then the cost is mostly walking time. If an enemy still controls the hallway, carrying a key item instead of another weapon becomes a choice about the route too.
There's a balance, though. If returning always triggers a new fight, collecting supplies could become more expensive than they're worth. A shortcut you earn by exploring seems like a useful middle ground: the risk changes because you learned the map.
How would you handle that balance? I'm especially curious about examples where an inventory decision changed how you moved through an area, rather than just making you take an extra trip. Please tag story spoilers.

holy SHIT he is so scary, up until now i have not felt any tension at all but he is a complete game changer (haha)
i'm so proud of myself too because i thought that when he came in i wouldn't be able to push myself to keep going, but i'm just about to go back down to the jail and leave the police station

What actually makes a game a horror game to you?
I'm currently developing a horror game, and I've been playing horror games for as long as I can remember. It's always been one of my favorite genres.
But there's something I have been thinking about lately.
What actually makes a game a horror game to you? like what is *Horror\* to you?

The Unhidden – a third-person psychological survival horror with a retro-filtered look. Free demo in Steam Next Fest

Long-time survival horror fan here, and one of the devs at Calvary Games (small indie studio from Spain).
The Unhidden goes for the slow, psychological dread of the classics rather than jumpscares: fixed-feeling third-person camera, a flashlight you can't live without, and adrenaline auto-injectors as your scarce resource. Visually we aimed for modern realistic assets pushed through a retro post-process.
Free demo on PC and Mac during Steam Next Fest (Oct 19–26):

Feedback from genre fans is exactly what we need, good or bad.

Hot Take: I liked Hellraiser: Revival more than Silent Hill: Townfall and Resident Evil 9. My Horror Game of the Year without a doubt!
The gameplay in all of these games is nothing to write home about, but for me Hellraiser killed it with a consistently killer sense of aesthetic, and a really dope dark story. It definitely got more of a reaction out of me than either of the other 2. And it’s only $40 vs $70

What is the general consensus for "The Chant" in the survival horror space?
I've never played this game or seen lets plays. All I know is that the main character is played by Siobhan Williams (who played Laura from The Quarry). It's getting positive attraction recently, but the reviews are generally mid.
I want to play it because I love Siobhan Williams.

Hellraiser Revival: Store now selling zero ammo, am I fucked?
I assume this is a glitch since this i the first time it happened but after fighting the slug thing in the peep show I went back to the store to resupply and it's empty of ammo, recipes, weapons etc other than the bare basics.
I do have multiple saves, usuaully ona rotation so always oversaving my oldest file. And even on my oldest file, the store is fucked... so the glitch seems to have happened when I first accessed it and got the assault rifle.
Will the store reset and start selling shotgun shells and assault rifle ammo, or has this fucked my game?

Working on a retro 1-bit gothic survival horror game focused on lantern management and fog-choked exploration!
Hey everyone! I've been developing Nightmare Exorcist: Escape from the Nightmare Realm, a gothic survival horror game inspired by classic handheld aesthetics.
The core loop focuses on navigating shifting corridors using a lantern, managing item resources, and surviving turn-based tactical encounters.
I'd love to hear from fellow survival horror fans: what are your favorite atmosphere or tension-building mechanics in retro horror games? (Happy to share a link in the comments if anyone wants to check it out!)

Fatal Frame II is the most devastating exploration of codependency in horror
Neil Druckmann, the mind behind The Last of Us, once called the original 2003 release "the scariest kind of experience in any medium." Not just the scariest game, but the scariest art piece in existence. That claim holds because of how the game weaponizes Mio and Mayu's relationship, translating codependency into one of the best horror stories I've ever experienced.
The game starts with the comfort of being with your twin companion only to rip her away after the first chapter. Rather than just having the horror of isolation take over, the game constantly forces you to chase apparitions of Mayu slipping away just barely missing her at every turn. What begins as Mio's debt of protection slowly contorts into something agonizing: control. And the deeper the sisters sink into the village, the clearer it becomes that the "people" they encounter aren't just reflections of themselves but warnings. The Amakura sisters are biologically and spiritually destined to repeat a generational cycle of ritualistic murder. Every step you take to save Mayu only drags both sisters closer to completing the ritual. Mio becoming her sister's executioner, and walking away forever marked by that guilt, is one of the cruelest resolutions in gaming history.
