I have a problem. The Moog grandmother was my first synth. I love it, and I can’t imagine parting with it, but I also feel like I don’t use it enough because there is no patch memory. But the spring reverb, those tasty oscillators, the drive, the sync, and of course the filter, are all awesome.
For context, I make indie music, I record all my instruments live, one at a time. I USUALLY don’t sequence anything, and these days I don’t do the DAWless jam thing (though it’s worth noting that I stupidly don’t use a computer/DAW for music at all right now).
So there are a few different directions to go:
1) find a good resource to help my brain think in terms of semi-modular patching. (In contrast to digital mod matrices, which just feel intuitive for whatever reason). Learn to love the process and try to get really fast at making what I want. Typically if I sit down to sound design, it’s only on a synth with patch memory, because my music time is limited. I’m very comfortable with the grandmother as it is routed out of the box, but I still feel like an idiot when I get the patch cables out.
2) keep the grandmother as a specialist, buy a mono like a bass station or messenger with patch memory as a work horse.
3) stop kidding myself, sell the grandmother, cry, and buy a sub 37 and cry again at the cost.
4) do I even need a dedicated mono? I feel like there’s a ton of character to be lost, but I do use my poly’s as monos quite a bit.
Any suggestions?
