The "take me to the chocolate shop" line and the following wordless interaction has me dying of laughter jesus christ. That was so perfect.

I find the lack of bouncy castle for a shrine rather disturbing

This episode finally showed me why people could have possibly wanted to have Richard on the show. That's the positive. I liked the train tasks, but man the others were meh.

And once again an absolute dogshit live task. Like the sausage one. They just had a fun one with pictionary without looking the last episode with Izy locking in, why again one where it's pretty much 100% luck and no skill expression?

As someone who liked the last 6 series and thought they all were a great watch, this one's a real bummer.

At least Richard seemed to have woken up after a few episodes and realized he needed to be more defiant in a stroppy funny way instead of a "I don't care whatever" way.

u/candiceislove 16h ago

first series that, "oh there's a new episode of taskmaster?" idk if it's the task or just the energy of the 5 people.

5

u/Worried_Pangolin_759 19h ago

This really is such a poor season. No one really looks like they want to be there. Richard for me has been such a let down, a bit of life in him this week but staying in character all season is not what I wanted to see or I would presume anyone.

5

u/MooingTree 10h ago

No one except Chloe, to be fair

3

u/Harwynch 23h ago

I'm not sure what is happening. Series 21 was already a big step-down from 20 and 19, but this one might just be one of the worst the show has ever had. This cast is just not doing it for me. Their attitude is off, the lack of effort is irritating, they don't seem to get into the spirit of the tasks, they don't banter much, they just don't try. The tasks also aren't as inspired, but series 20 (aside from the twins task) also didn't have the most inspired tasks, but aside from Sanjeev, they tried to at least make things interesting or entertaining. The prizes are just so disappointing. I don't understand how professional comedians could care so little. It's no wonder Chloe will most likely be the first contestant to win more than 5 episodes, they're the only one that's remotely trying anything.

u/Pharmacy_Duck John Kearns 1d ago

That was easily the best episode of the series. Three great pre-recorded tasks and the studio task, shit though it was, was saved by Richard giving us the Richard that, I think, people had been wanting to see since his name first came up in a wishlist.

I've had a horrible week, and watching this tonight just took the edge off it.

u/Pervius94 🥄 I'm Locked In ❤️ 6h ago

This episode and his antics in the gregulator task were the first time I understood why people might have wanted Richard on the show. if he brought that energy all the time, he would have actually landed for me.

Seven episodes in, still no 'Bad Dong' reference. Incredible.

11

u/IAgreeWithLincoln 15h ago

You realize that was just a single day of work for them over a decade ago? They’re not aware of what’s trending nor rewatching their videos on YouTube. There’s never going to be a bad dong reference lol

9

u/Mean-Aside1970 Guz Khan 1d ago

I am just watching the episode now and they have to make the shrine and all I’m saying is I would make one that is just A BAT OF CHEESE
Also, he is just so fucking hot

15

u/kittentarentino 1d ago

The tasks are really not hitting this season. I’ve never been so drawn to how much they’re not working like this before.

It’s just so linear, and there’s no room for any sort of comedic expression beyond commentary. It leaves greg needing to be pretty neutered and reward everybody because they, I guess did it?

Obviously the live task was an all time low. But at least it seems like Richard is understanding both in the tasks and in the room that his bit isn’t working and he needs to have fun trying.

I would critique the cast but I just think the tasks are too bad to have any sort of comparison with the rest of the show. The show is a huge hit, it’s time to write a bible and get some people in there to help generate new ideas.

7

u/NakamuraWooch 1d ago

I think this episode was especially bad, like I completely lost interest in the present wrapping task

4

u/sbs1138 7h ago

I just don’t get where Alex thought the comedy would be with the present wrapping task.

There’s only really two options. Wrap something big up or wrap something small up to look really big.

17

u/Arcadela 1d ago

Top 3 worst designed live tasks

I'd rather they repeat some of the good ones (with different words, sounds, items ..) than to come up with this nonsense.

10

u/twxf 1d ago

I think they did this luck-based one to try to even out the point spread between the contestants, since Chloe was so far ahead. In theory they'd all have an equal chance of snagging the five points, but it ended up backfiring when Chloe won anyway just from sheer luck.

15

u/UnrealCanine 1d ago

I don't know their fixation on all or nothing live tasks

9

u/twxf 1d ago

My guess is they were banking on the 80% chance of Chloe not getting any points for that task to try to keep things more competitive.

3

u/Stumpy_Arms 1d ago

It was unfathomably bad. Might as well have them scratching off lottery tickets. First person to $10 wins.

19

u/bailz_05 1d ago

the only real gripe I had was the team of three getting ANY points for that Paul chowdry task, I think if you talk about what to do with someone and then literally pick that person up, you have acknowledged them. It felt to me that the task was more Don't TALK to Paul Chowdry, which would be fine if that's what the task said.

8

u/Relevant_Research_98 1d ago

That's the first episode this season that was good. The mix of a train and a crossword was so abstract that it felt in particularly special.

9

u/ExiledHyruleKnight 1d ago

Ok Seriously? has anyone check in on Richard?

What was that? Ok an Amazing hour of television but... that's not a Richard Ayoade I recognize.

What's worse, I kind of like it. But it just came out of no where in episode 7? Does it take him 3 studio days to warm up to people?

9

u/Aldebaran135 Javie Martzoukas 1d ago

Chloe is dominating this one, they're obviously gonna win.

5

u/Hamstah_J Mathew Baynton 1d ago

Just found a way to cheese the crossword task, just put random things on both ways of the track to stop the train, don't think it's against any rules

3

u/NakamuraWooch 1d ago

do you not need the train to go round the tracks to see everything? or would you just run round instead?

2

u/Hamstah_J Mathew Baynton 14h ago

Either run or remove the objects when you're done with a section

43

u/ikeamonkey2 1d ago edited 1d ago

This hasn't been one of my favorite series but I enjoyed seeing Richard being more lively in the studio throughout this episode, and Greg and Alex poking some fun at him

I also thought the Paul Chowdry task was a funny and creative idea for a task (though the finished products were just alright imo)

The live task was extremely boring and Greg making fun of it was the only thing that made it slightly funny

21

u/Figuratively-1984 1d ago

Paul saying you never know how other people see you followed immediately by isy saying she's adding another vagina was absolutely the highlight of the series for me

2

u/Salohacin 6h ago

Paul is honestly so funny when he's being deadpan. His episode of the TM podcast had me cackling.

22

u/XpCjU 1d ago

(though the finished products were just alright imo)

I suspect that was caused by the 20 Minute timelimit. That's barely enough to brainstorm an idea. I understand that they want everything done in a certain time frame, but short time limits are hampering creativity.

3

u/ikeamonkey2 1d ago

Good point

31

u/notathrowaway75 1d ago

Absolutely fantastic episode, best of the series.

But oh boy that live task was terrible. Richard saved it by conforming.

10

u/wraithsy 1d ago

Oof… Feel like I’ve given this series a fair shake and there have been highlights (mostly Isy, sometimes Nina) but man it’s generally been a slog… don’t think I’ll finish it. There’s v little chemistry between the cast, the tasks feel quite thin, and as much as I love Ayoade in other things, he seems like a real energy suck, leaning in to his curmudgeonly persona. Some of the best contestants have been character comedians who shed their shtick for the show & were just genuine eg John Kearnes. Chloe may be very good at the tasks but (in my opinion) they are just… not funny. Here’s hoping 23 course corrects a bit.

26

u/Esteban2808 Jeremy Wells 🇳🇿 1d ago

Probably the strongest ep of the season? But I dont like it when only 1 person gets points. Just increases the lead of one person

2

u/Jacksucks_atlife04 Amy Gledhill 1d ago

Yeah I don’t like those tasks especially how it went to the leader that was already far ahead I was hoping it went to Nina so she can slice down Chloe’s lead but of course it had to go them.

1

u/Rwandrall4 1d ago

yeah so far i had this season as a "won't include in my rewatches" but this is inching it towards the "ok season" bucket

1

u/Aldebaran135 Javie Martzoukas 1d ago

Isy's prize task and "Worry not!" reminded me of this: https://youtu.be/3U3Rh9mxcoU?is=bhaThq7Ak0_HdCZD

21

u/AmoebaExcellent3187 1d ago

Idk if I’m ovulating or what, but annoyed Alex is hot. Sorry. His clear irritation with the cast while explaining the live task was doing it for me

9

u/Actual-Row-6806 1d ago

I’m always down to climb Greg like a tree

6

u/AmoebaExcellent3187 1d ago

Is it just me or did Alex look hot when he was getting up after Matt’s guessing task?

4

u/Moonlessnight25 1d ago

I remember thinking, "damn his hair looks good." Don't know about hot, but he definitely had something going on there.

14

u/Davidellias 1d ago

I wish they could have scrapped the wrapping task and brought it back in a later series.

It was a great but needed to have tighter rules o make it more fair on Greg

11

u/needabossplz 1d ago

Paul looks great

21

u/southwales1985 1d ago

I hope the next series is a return to form, as this current one has unfortunately been a tough watch at times.

31

u/SherlockBrolmes 1d ago

On one hand, I am really enjoying Chloe Petts, they're great and definitely cracking me up every episode.

On the other hand, I'm frustrated that they keep winning, especially when they're clearly going to win it all. I know winning means very little, but I always enjoy seeing each comedian win at least one episode and sadly that doesn't seem likely :( . Plus the chemistry of the group seems off relative to the other series I've watched and I wonder if their competitive attitude versus Nina and Isy's happy-go-luckiness, Matt's general befuddledness, and Richard's cool guy doesn't care demeanor is throwing the chemistry of the cast off. That said, if I was playing I would totally be more like Chloe and be competitive lol.

0

u/thatautisticguy 🟦 🟩 🟨 🟩 🟨 12h ago

nah, shes there to compete, if its ok for kerry godliman to be that competitive, same must apply to petts too

and to be fair, I want to see which garage chloe stores the trophy in?

0

u/Pervius94 🥄 I'm Locked In ❤️ 6h ago

Heck, Chloe isn't even that competitive, it's just the other four seem to not try at all.

9

u/Pharmacy_Duck John Kearns 23h ago

They're annoying me far less than John Robins in the same situation. The main difference being, Chloe is likeable and actually entertaining.

7

u/churadley Joel Dommett 1d ago

Yeah. I wish Chloe had a better cast to work with. She would've been amazing in any of the last 3 series. No one in this one can keep up with Chloe's competence and banter.

You can see how uncomfortable the rest of this cast is with just seeing Chloe going up there again. I'm sure Chloe feels awkward about parading it in the end, but she's gotta funny it up for the credits.

16

u/Jacksucks_atlife04 Amy Gledhill 1d ago

They are 19 points ahead with 3 episodes to go which is a lot it’s also annoying cause there’s been 2 luck winner takes all live tasks which Chloe’s got a total of 10 from and the only other competitor (Nina) got -1 if those points tallies were switched Nina would be in the lead by 2 points

11

u/TheLoneWolf527 1d ago

I also forgot that Chloe was gifted 5 points for literally no reason because Isy had to write a name down when she was the real postal worker or whatever and wasn't going to write herself down

9

u/ExiledHyruleKnight 1d ago

I mean the game is the game, but yeah, 15 point lead with 3 episodes to go, it's going to take an epic failure for the season scores to be interesting.

I feel like they need two Ed Gambles every season. Or 3 seasons ago with Maisie, Ania and Phil. Each being "generally competent" But actually quite average at most things. But if they care too much... it's not funny.

Even better because you could see how much Maisie cared about winning so I'm glad she won, but ... that was a good ending.

12

u/PopesMasseuse 1d ago

I mean, what else are they supposed to do. They don't know how the others are gonna perform and it's fun to be competitive.

7

u/SherlockBrolmes 1d ago

To be clear I am not blaming Chloe at all. They should be themselves and play the game how they want to! But as a viewer it's just frustrating, that's all.

10

u/Rwandrall4 1d ago

honestly put them in series 14 and Chloe Petts would have ended second or third. all of the other contestants in this series are of the bottom tier of competitiveness (doesnt mean they are bad contestants, as you say points matter little).

-3

u/things_U_choose_2_b 1d ago edited 1d ago

While I agree that the tasks are probably getting harder to create after so many seasons, this is one of the best seasons in ages. All the contestants are a delight, all are engaging with the tasks in their own way, and I cannot pick a favourite.

Issy is a welcome dose of silly, you'd need a fully blackened husk of a heart not to find her endearing. Chloe is just naturally hilarious. Nina is delicious chaos, Richard is as much of an enjoyable challenge for Greg & Alex as I hoped. Matt Lucas of course is very funny, maybe it's because he's a bit more reserved as himself than his mental characters, but think he's a bit outshined just by how amazing the others are.

I hope this show never ends!

Wow, bunch of pissy moaners in this sub. Apparently we're not allowed to express that we enjoy the show.

-5

u/Inner-Associate6599 2d ago

Dull, dull, dull - the tasks are either over-complicated or too tedious to watch.

3

u/notathrowaway75 1d ago

I disagree, the tasks this episode were great.

18

u/Frequent-Ferret-5110 1d ago

I always thought the show was sort of fool-proof, in that the formula was built so that there'd always be another task, moment, comedian, to make up the slack if another failed. After this season I don't feel like I can argue that anymore, as the tasks are so ill-designed and the cast (despite several talented people) just isn't working.

My wife has only watched four or so seasons so far, mostly picking ones where she loves a cast member. She was super into this one because of Richard, and other than enjoying Chloe I don't think she's interested in watching any more.

I do think the main problem is with the tasks, like you said. Doesn't feel like any of them have helped the cast to gain any chemistry or momentum with one another. That said the opening gifts have all been pretty poor (and not in the fun-bad way they often are), and a lot of that seems to be on several members of the cast not putting much effort or thought into it (Matt, Richard, even Nina a bit).

6

u/AggressiveSkywriting 1d ago

I think the idea that they don't want to redo a task (except the absolute snooze-fest of "bring an item on trips around the world with you for 8 months one") is a miss. I'm happy to see other personalities repeat tasks from earlier seasons. I'm sure some people will say THEY'VE DONE THAT BEFORE but ignore them. People behave/react differently in the same situation.

6

u/Lettuce-G0 1d ago

Agreed, earlier episodes had at least fun house task. The banter from Richard saved the wrapping, but there was nothing fun in Paul or the train task. Greg admitted we just wanted the final task to be over, one minutes into it.

There is no chemistry with the cast after 7 episodes. Richard being Richard. Chloe far too competitive and smug. 2 shy participants that combined don't get as much speak time as Chloe or Richard taken separately. Only Matt is a comedic all rounder and brings me smile consistantly.

6

u/Le_stam 1d ago

That's weird, (how much our opinions differ). I tend to stay away from discussions of how entertaining I think the contestants are, because obviously, not every style will appeal to everybody. But I feel Matt's style seems to be for no one, I just find him incredibly unmemorable.

13

u/Le_stam 2d ago

Quite good episode. Train task felt a bit overproduced, maybe to hide that it wasn't all that entertaining.

10

u/Kamenbond 1d ago

The TMNZ did so many great train task this season - so it makes me sad the train task wasn't very good

3

u/SnooChipmunks6077 1d ago

Yes that task had more pick ups than any other one I can think of.

12

u/Bob_le_babes 2d ago edited 2d ago

The judging on the Paul choudry task was shocking The last task wasn't great either

35

u/wcctnoam Joanna Page 2d ago

Richard was on fire this episode, absolute bangers both solo and in interactions. I can't believe there's people that don't enjoy him in this show. Maybe he needed 7 episodes to fully acclimate, which I wouldn't dispute, but boy was he in here.

-7

u/Rosdrago 2d ago

1 episode doesn't make up for 6 episodes where he was kind of shit.

21

u/TimeHathMyLord Ania Magliano 2d ago

Apparently the edit doesn't do him justice. Someone in this thread went to see the recording for episode 1, had marked Richard down as one of the greatest, and was very disappointed to see that it was nearly all cut... I'd say the outtakes prove their point.

2

u/sadsongz 1d ago

I am half wondering if there was a different editing team for the first have of this series, because things were feeling a little strained until this episode. There was just a lot more contestant quips and interactions this time that made it finally feel more fun and more like classic Taskmaster. I guess I prefer space for those interactions versus listening to overly complicated task instructions (sorry Alex, just constructive criticism). I enjoyed Richard on the podcast the other week too, but felt his humour wasn't really coming across in the earlier episodes this series.

6

u/Esteban2808 Jeremy Wells 🇳🇿 1d ago

There was some good stuff in the out takes posted on YouTube that sadly didnt make the cut

7

u/Rosdrago 1d ago

The outtakes do show him in a better light but outtakes aren't the episode. I don't know why the edit is making him so bad then but to the casual viewer (and one who doesn't watch him normally), he just...doesn't seem interested.

13

u/cosmicallyliminal 🥄 I'm Locked In ❤️ 2d ago

I believe this because I've been a big Richard fan for a while and he is absolutely hilarious. I've seen people in this sub speculate that he isn't quick witted enough for TM and that's just crazy talk because he absolutely is. I've long felt the editing in this series has been doing him dirty.

17

u/patchg81 2d ago

Worst prize task entries ever?

1

u/Salohacin 6h ago

No matter how bad any of the are, I just want to step into Isy's world because I feel like she lives in a weird doll house full of random nonsense. Greg's reaction to the cutlery story and braid was hilarious.

But yeah in general I feel like the prize tasks get worse the more niche Alex is about them. I feel like you don't need to have things like "the best thing that looks the best from a distance but up close is boring" because it's just so limiting for what the contestants can bring. There are enough adjectives out there, it's not like they're going to run out of simpler options.

3

u/Harwynch 23h ago

Probably since series 10

18

u/Kamenbond 1d ago

Richard's dog was nice

19

u/Evening-Hamster-6012 2d ago edited 1d ago

The contestants should take the silly tasks seriously. When they don't care it's like teenagers telling younger kids that Santa isn't real.

3

u/drawnimo 13h ago

Richard being in character as the put-out person who is confused by everything works really well as a comedic bit.

Matt Lucas is so clearly annoyed to be there and a complete energy vampire for the series.

u/captbollocks Celia Pacquola 🇦🇺 2d ago

Can't believe it took me this long to realise that Tom Conti is Nina Conti's father!

I've loved his work ever since his appearance in Friends and then more recently in the Dark Knight Rises and Oppenheimer!

Such a talented family!

2

30

u/Tovi92 2d ago

By far the best episode in the series so far for me, and coincidentally it's the one in which Richard took a more active role in the studio. Hopefully they keep this up until the end of the series.

12

u/AggressiveSkywriting 1d ago edited 1d ago

This cut definitely made him feel more like he was having fun in his normal-self way and I was happy to see that. I dunno why, but Matt Lucas being a crossword guy and just *refusing* to leave the train because he wanted to solve it got me.

Edit: Also the irony is that this studio ep it looked like Richard had some seasonal allergy eye issues going on but still performed.

18

u/Mojo-man 2d ago edited 2d ago

Ok I need to indulge my inner Ed Gamble and ask someone PLEASE explain everything that happened in the prize task to me 😅

I was never so lost in 22 + NZ + AUS series...

  1. Matt chocolate - Alright forgot nice try would have given it more but whatever
  2. Richards Dog perfect - instant good and has a great backstory - Only one who did the Taske (all others needed long explanations) 2 Points?
  3. Nina brought in another Ventriloquist thing that didn`t fit the prize at all and had to be explained - 3 points?
  4. Now we`re getting beyond the points. WTF was Izys thing? "Th cutlery drawer is all mixed up?" That`s not a real scenario that happened to anyone? And even if it was... what was the thing? Cloth you can stick 6 pieces of cutleryy in?
  5. But now the BIG ??? Chloes shoe mneasurer? That the audience and Greg and Alex collectively orgasmed over...??? Is that a specific british kink? I know these devices they... they don`t feel like anything they are around your foot... so is every shoe you ever wear... I just don`t understand this one. British people PLEASE explain why this was treated like the reinvention of the Vibrator? 🫥

I`m SO confused by everything I just watched I feel crazy 🤨😵‍💫

2

u/Salohacin 5h ago

I feel like that shoe measurer had very 'laminator' vibes. Greg just seems to like a solid bit of kit, even if it is just some tat he won't ever actually use.

6

u/notathrowaway75 1d ago

Nina brought in another Ventriloquist thing that didn`t fit the prize at all and had to be explained

I mean all of them have to be explained. It's a puppet of her dad. Seems self explanatory of something she thinks is great.

Now were getting beyond the points. WTF was Izys thing? "Th cutlery drawer is all mixed up?" Thats not a real scenario that happened to anyone? And even if it was... what was the thing? Cloth you can stick 6 pieces of cutleryy in?

This isn't the first time Izzy had a crazy prize, there was the brain too.

But sure, it was a some cloth that you stack 6 pieces of cutlery in as a solution to a messy drawer. Something her mom made.

But now the BIG ??? Chloes shoe mneasurer? That the audience and Greg and Alex collectively orgasmed over...??? Is that a specific british kink? I know these devices they... they dont feel like anything they are around your foot... so is every shoe you ever wear... I just dont understand this one. British people PLEASE explain why this was treated like the reinvention of the Vibrator?

It was just jokes lmao? It's not that serious. It's like when Greg was excited about the laminator.

u/SteveJBanjo 2d ago edited 2d ago
  1. Probably like all over the world, the week before you go back to primary school for a new school year (in the UK in September), your mum takes you to go and get some new school shoes (because you've likely grown out of your previous ones over the long summer break). It's a kind of rite-of-passage thing; and, in the UK, a company called Clarks (which Chloe mentioned by name) has cornered the market in school shoes for kids 5-12 yo (or at least they used to, when I was that age) — sold reputation for affordable "quality shoes", good for your kids' feet.

So you'd go to the Clarks shop ... and there'd be loads of kids there with their parents, all for the same reason, big September rush. And the assistant would measure your feet for your new shoes and because kids feet grow quickly, it needs to be done properly. So they had a big machine with moving metal plates that you'd put your feet in and the plates would close in, close in, close in — two from top and bottom to measure your foot length, two from side to side to measure the width — and then they'd stop when they met resistance from your feet on all sides. And it was always kind of exciting. I guess the anticipation was part of it — the queuing, watching kids putting their feet into this machine, while it whirred and closed in like a compactor but somehow knew just when to stop so as not to crush your feet. And then, when it was your turn, just the sensory experience of the plates moving around your feet and then lightly gripping it.

Occasionally, the machine was broken or the queue for it was long, so an assistant would just use a manual version — which is what Chloe brought in. That was my only beef with this: If Greg had been on his game, he'd have pointed out that the version Chloe brought in was a *disappointment* as a child — if the assistant just came over with the plastic handheld version, it was always crushing. "AWWW. But I want to put my foot in the magic machine!"

(Sidenote: The "eroticism" of it has thrown you off, but that element is a joke — Chloe's escalating a collective childhood memory of something that was fun and thrilling and charged, because it was sensory and tactile, and re-positioning it as an "erotic" experience for humorous effect.)

0

u/TVCasualtydotorg 1d ago

Gregg is of an age where the machine would have not been a thing when he was a kid. It was new fangled tech when I was a boy and I'm about 15 years younger than him.

5

u/BlowMyNoseAtU 1d ago

Wait.... Are you saying usually it's not a manual device? It's an automated machine?

I have never seen such a thing nor the electronic type Ed discussed on the podcast.

Also... It was rare for a clerk to measure my feet as a child. You could ask someone to do that, but the manual foot measurer things just lay around the shoe store for people to use themselves.... Maybe it is a regional thing 😂 Or maybe my mother was just too introverted to get someone involved in measuring our feet very often.

0

u/crackanape 18h ago

When I was growing up they'd X-ray our feet.

6

u/Full_Tip8962 1d ago

There was an electronic / mechanical machine thing, it was almost always broken in my experience. But that's not the item that Chloe brought in or mentioned in the studio banter, as you say the manual ones Chloe brought in was far more common and everyday

1

u/Davidellias 1d ago

I winced at Chloe explaining it in the moment but thinking about it felt more like satire.

1

u/Full_Tip8962 1d ago

Genuinley don't know one person who enjoyed going to get their feet measured before term started, it was a pain in the backside - missing the last Saturday of the summer holidays to be dragged into a deeply unfashionable shop with your mum to buy a pair of deeply unfashionable shoes which weren't the ones you wanted anyway.

7

u/Rosdrago 2d ago

Explaining it doesn't make it any less stupid to have gotten 5 points. Sincerely - A person in the UK.

9

u/Full_Tip8962 2d ago

To answer no5. Absolutely no idea, neither me or my wife got that at all. It's not a widely shared British kink, at least not in the circles we move in! The shoe measurer is a straight up lift from Chloe's stand up tour, obviously all contestants will use bits of their material in the tasks but I feel Chloe is leading with their stand up routines rather than starting with the task - this is a bit of stand up I want to use in a task rather than this is the task, what can I use for it

3

u/Mojo-man 2d ago

I didn`t know that about the standup routine. From the answers I got it seems to be a kind of nostalgic ritual in parts of the UK and in the rest of Europe just doesn`t seem to be that big of a thing.

And it seems the erotic element is just a Chloe and Greg kink which explains the 5 points...? 😅

23

u/WaxyPadlockJazz 2d ago edited 2d ago

Wow....the cutlery plait was absolutely hysterical. The set-up she contrived for it was so fucking good. And nothing could have prepared me for the reveal of what that was going to be. Isy might be one of the greatest prize taskers the show has ever had.

Edit: to answer your question about Chloe's prize, it's playing on nostalgia. You never wanted to go shoe shopping as a kid, but it was immediate exciting when they brought out what was essentially the closest thing to a toy in that kind of situation. My wife laughed at it and said she also loved that thing and "I thought it was science!". The whole orgasm thing was a joke, made onstage....by comedians.

6

u/Mojo-man 2d ago

I guess it`s a british nostalgia thing then (we have them here too but I don`t remember these having any signifficant cultural importance to my or anyones childhood). Thank you for explaining 😅

21

u/KidGold 2d ago

I think Greg is getting annoyed at the lack of engagement from some of the cast and awarded points purely based on effort and creativity.

6

u/Mojo-man 2d ago

That would make sense. Cause that felt like some Jermeny Wells NZ Season 1 scoring 🙂‍↔️

41

u/thatsong Morgana Robinson 2d ago

Richard finally loosening up in studio has been long overdue and you can feel the show being better because of it.

The train task was a bit of a let down with all the promo teasing it. I can see why it wasn't a lead task, like the t-shirt gun from last season that was used a lot in ads.

The team task didn't click for me. It being too loosey goosey with the use of Chowdry in his own shrine was a miss. Also it didn't have a lot of "team" dynamic to it.

The final task would have been a lot better if we could see the dice rolls. Additionally, being a luck based task I feel like they needed something better than a dice game to decide who chose that round. It was just luck on top of luck.

I will agree with others saying Alex was annoyed Chloe Petts won again. They are the only one playing the games ironically, straight, and the series has suffered with too many of the others leaning into doing bits.

A better title for the ep would've beentook your ass to praline town

u/ValdemarAloeus 2d ago

It was nice to see some actual steam at the steam museum.

Pretty sure the the smoke doesn't chuff though, that's the steam. (and only in inefficient engines)

Was the joke here that they had Nina looking for a Nina?

1

u/TimeHathMyLord Ania Magliano 2d ago

Oooooh good one!

22

u/littlebabybuddy24 2d ago

I want to do the train task! It looks fun. I also think it brought out the best in all of the contestants.

Also “screet” 😂 Chloe getting so angry about was hilarious.

44

u/Ecstatic_Computer_89 2d ago

I haven't read every single comment, but did anyone else notice that Richard was using a blue bucket in the final task but appeared back at his seat with a red bucket?

9

u/froggyc19 1d ago

He clearly wanted the winning bucket!

1

u/SnooChipmunks6077 1d ago

Good spot, but I suspect that he isn't really keeping various items and is - get this - just doing a bit for comedy. There's normally quite a lot of time that passes before concluding the live task and the final scores being administered; i imagine that during that period either Richard asked for a bucket for The Bit or the producers reminded him about it, and they grabbed one of a different colour.

8

u/eldubinoz Mike Wozniak 1d ago

Especially since Alex said in an interview recently that Richard rode his bike home at the end of every studio film 😄 Probably not with a bucket and all that other crap

Two different versions of Taskmaster featuring trains. Autistic community is eating good

3

u/drawnimo 13h ago

Autistic Matt Lucas made it pretty clear how much he did not enjoy the train task.

47

u/lonelygagger Javie Martzoukas 2d ago

The crossword train task looked more fun to play than to watch. I have the agree with Chloe that the secret word being "secret" is too cheeky, even for Alex.

The Shrine to Paul Chowdhry task was fun, especially ignoring his commentary in the room. I have to laugh that Isy and Nina somehow came up with multi-titted women with three vaginas.

"Let's see if you're gonna take me to the chocolate shop, shall we?" 🤔

"I just took your ass to praline town."

Richard not conforming to standing on his spot was fun.

The 'can I keep this prop?' running gag continues. "I've come away with a lovely bucket."

"It's the only task right across the series where there's not a single person in this room who wants this to carry on." 😅

While I'm enjoying it, I'll say part of the reason why this series isn't as much fun as others is because Chloe keeps dominating each episode by such a large margin.

3

u/Salohacin 5h ago

Yeah, there wasn't really much viewer engagement with the crossword task, and I love crosswords!

I was also surprised that the scores were 8-8-9-9-10. Felt like it might have been a little too easy?

9

u/SnooChipmunks6077 1d ago

Yeah it's an interesting one. A lot of people have the S8 'Sneak Up On Alex' task as their favourite - and with good reason! I think that's because they both would want to do it themselves AND that the presentation of it on the show was so entertaining. Whereas this time if I was doing it I'd enjoy it as much as Nina clearly did, but as a spectator it was just people doing a crossword on a train.

16

u/KidGold 2d ago

The crossword train task looked more fun to play than to watch.

This season (and to a degree the most recent season of Game Changer) seem to have suffered from an over-focus on designing games and not so much open-ended tasks that are platforms for creativity and comedy.

Was Paul Chowdry always so stylish? He has a great look. On the same subject I appreciate Richard’s outfits too.

My favourite Paul anecdote came from the Off Menu podcast. Someone went for dinner with him and when the waiter asked if he wanted still or sparkling water he asked what they recommended. Like it was wine.

His TM podcast episode was great too.

42

u/Dom_Shady David Correos 🇳🇿 2d ago

Richard was on fire with his oneliners this episode:

  • To Alex, ice cold: "You don't often do character work, do you?"
  • To Greg: "You fix your black heart, or you die!"
  • "That's right, I just took your ass to praline town!"

u/Dom_Shady David Correos 🇳🇿 2d ago edited 2d ago

Isy: "Fair enough, JEFF!"

I did not expect Isy to be either this angry or passive-aggressive.

u/MastodonBoring 2d ago

Im surprised by the positive perception this episode has gotten. The tasks the whole season seem simultaneously straightforward and convoluted in a way where there is really no chance for the contestants to improvise, find loopholes or show any creativity.
Chloe’s competitiveness was endearing in the beginning but now is just boring.
Nina, Matt and Isy are so quiet.
I love Richard and he has some great quips but it seems he’s not really engaging with the rest of the cast.
Nothing seems to gel.

u/notathrowaway75 1d ago

The prize, wrapping, and shrine tasks certainly required the contestants to improvise. The train task was a straightforward challenge task but it was fun. The live task was bad.

Chloe’s competitiveness was endearing in the beginning but now is just boring.

She wasn't particularly competitive this episode?

Agreed with the rest.

8

u/pkontour 2d ago

Fully agree, I get that it must be difficult to keep generating new tasks but there haven't been many good ones in S22, and they were all boring in episode 7. Combine that with the ridiculously low energy of most of the group and it's just dull. I've laughed more during a single episode of previous series' than I have across the whole of S22. I love Richard's comedy over the years but his persona doesn't really fit the format, Matt just doesn't know the show, Nina doesn't seem to be able to operate outside of puppet-based humour (every prize task offering is just a puppet of some sort), Isy is OK and Chloe is saving the series by being the only one who seems interested.

They are usually so good at recruiting the right balance for the cast, but this series they got it pretty wrong in my opinion.

3

u/can_I_try_again 1d ago

I disagree slightly. This group has energy, but the tasks are not compatible to what energizes them. They all performed well for the task about creating their own song. The problem is most of them are highly creative but are given highly restrictive tasks with only 20 minutes to brainstorm.

13

u/Gargarian67 2d ago

Admit it. We were spoiled by Matthew Baynton and Jason Matsoukis on the same season series. Jason really brought fun madness to the show and Baynton's Biggest Anti-Climax was Top 5 TM moments of all time - for all nations.

Oh absolutely, no argument there! It was just wordplay on the term that potatogated his task.

13

u/oldpuzzle 2d ago

Tbh that seems like an editing issue, because I refuse to believe Nina, Matt and Isy don’t have more fun lines.

6

u/violetmemphisblue 2d ago

There have been a few people here and elsewhere who have put their notes from filming and suggested that there has been a lot more interaction and in-jokes and running gags than we have seen. That's probably always the case, but since the earlier episodes have seemed quite quiet in the studio, it is much more obvious...I wonder if perhaps some of the stuff that was edited out either didn't meet some standards (like, it was too suggestive) or had too many personal references or something?

1

u/MastodonBoring 2d ago

Yeah you’re right that might be it. But the editing has never really been an issue so I’m led to think it might be the contestants. Even with the top notch outtakes

12

u/TimeHathMyLord Ania Magliano 2d ago

I can believe it about Nina, who seemes (especially in the first episodes) out of her comfort zone. The outtakes, however, show that the other 2 engage quite often. I don't mind that one member of the cast stays quiet, it is just a shame that the edit (and maybe other factors) gives the impression that nothing happens bewteen them all.

That you're in excellent company: Greg, Chloe, Alex and at least 75% of the audience at the taping.

38

u/Jezza1078 2d ago

From a competitive perspective, it’s slightly unfortunate that Chloe has taken 11 points v Nina in two studio tasks that were pure chance, and also got gifted 5 points in error. They deserve to ultimately win but I don’t think the 19 point current gap quite represents the actual level of performance of the contestants.

26

u/Sensitive-Salt6373 2d ago

You're so right!! Skilled task performance-wise, Chloe and Nina are actually neck and neck, which is delightful given that Chloe's vibe is "win at any cost" and Nina's vibe is "it's fun to be here :) thank you guys for organising this :)" imagine if the chance elements had gone the other direction??? The rage Chloe would feel 🤣

14

u/Tovetove 2d ago

I love watching this show and thinking about the deliberate editing choices they make with the in-studio banter. For example, they could have easily cut all the foot measuring edging stuff but decided nope, that absolutely needed to stay in

6

u/SnooChipmunks6077 1d ago

Agreed. About half of Chloe's spiel could have been cut there and we still would have got the gist. See also the cloche last week. Part of me thinks that the edit is deliberately trying to make them the Break Out Star of this series- and I say that as someone who has enjoyed them on the show a lot.

4

u/PrestigeArrival 1d ago

I’d say it’s more likely because they’re the only one that seems actively engaged and making an effort.

38

u/Public_Hunt_4665 Pigeor The Merciless One 2d ago

The shrine task was one of the most bullshit scoring i've ever seen. Task specifically says "pretend Paul is not here", team of three puts Paul himself on the shrine, and Greg says "Paul would appreciate the shrine with himself the most, five points". Remember when Greg said in Ep1 he'd be stricter this series?

I know that they have done like hundreds and hundreds of tasks at this point.

But man, the tasks have been so horrible this season in general and this episode was no exception. Normally the tasks are putting the comedians in situations where they need to be creative to try to solve a problem.. this season it seems like either really straightforward task with little room for creativity or banter.. or overly convoluted dud tasks that make no sense and suck the energy out of the show.

3

u/notathrowaway75 1d ago

Normally the tasks are putting the comedians in situations where they need to be creative to try to solve a problem

The wrapping and shrine tasks did this though.

7

u/TimeHathMyLord Ania Magliano 2d ago

I wonder if the fact that they are more convoluted is because Alex wanted to see their effect on Richard's brain.

And compared with NZs7, there are clearly not enough creative tasks. There were plenty of them - films, paintings, and the dream one was one of the GOAT in my opinion - and the contestants all made something wonderful - or hilariously failed to.
