Hobarts beautiful old post office - in Pen and Watercolour
As a travel sketcher and urban sketcher I love finding old architecture and great views and Hobart certainly has those ❤️

Hey everyone. The r/TasmaniaTravel subreddit is now up and running :)
There's a still a few admin things for me to sort out, but hopefully it can provide a more effective avenue for conversation specifically related to Tassie travel, while also preventing so many repeat questions from appearing here.
I look forward to seeing you over there!
Andrew.

Hey everyone! I'm moving to the Wynyard area from Melbourne in roughly a month. I'm hoping to meet new people I can spend time with ane who can help me ease into a new environment.
I'm 20F, I enjoy watching movies, travelling, reading, board games, hiking, music, and I love cats! I've one of my own, he's a handsome little cherub. I've visited Tasmania multiple times over the past year and have fallen inlove with its charm. I was offered with a job opportunity, and just knew I had to take it.
I'd appreciate if anyone has any reccomendations for things to do around the area/social events so I'm able to get out there and really blossom. Especially now we're starting to come into warmer weather.
I can't wait to hear back from everyone, thanks!

Hey everyone!
Bit of a long shot, but I thought I’d give it a try.
I bought a grey Wombat longsleeve (size M) at the Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre two days ago as part of a birthday gift for my girlfriend. We bought it together on the day, so it would be really nice to get the correct one.
Unfortunately, I’ve just realised that the lady at the counter accidentally gave me a size S when she went to the back to exchange the one I’d picked up from the shelf.
Would anyone happen to be travelling from Cradle Mountain to Hobart in the next couple of days and be willing to pick up a size M for me and bring it along? I’d obviously be happy to pay for your time and the inconvenience!
I’ll be leaving Hobart on Tuesday morning, so unfortunately, time is a bit tight.
I know it’s a long shot, but I’d really appreciate any help. Since the shop isnt answering Emails. Thanks a lot!

It IS cowardly
Also, corrupt. There's definitely money changing hands in the background
Abetz is one of the worst politicians ever to disgrace the already lowly term

My partner and I just moved to Tassie after 12 years in the US. I (US citizen with Aus permanent residency) have started a funded PhD program in Hobart in my field, but my partner is from devonport so we’re living with his in laws for now until we find a place to live. We also have a 15 month old that we wanted to raise closer to his family here and in Aus because i don’t have any family left in the states.
But of course this is a stressful time. Support is much appreciated, but I have diagnosed anxiety and need mental health support. We hope to be in Hobart by January, but i don’t think I can wait until then to talk to someone, especially because the anxiety is affecting my sleep. (Plus im tired all the time anyway even if I sleep well). I’m on a SNRI for my anxiety and have a few month supply for that but would need someone to help me manage that medication / re issue that when needed.
Does anyone have any recommendations on who I should see in the meantime or how to go about that? They could be in devonport with the option to go remote, or in Hobart etc. we are in Hobart for a few days every couple weeks as we look for houses and I have meetings with my supervisors.
I’d like someone who is female and familiar with anxiety, stress with major life change, postpartum, or even the experiencing of moving abroad would be great. I have Medicare but no private insurance, but still unfamiliar with this process, and am not comfortable bringing my mental struggles with my in laws.
Any recs on who to see or what to do?

Hi There, my partner and I are backpackers looking to rent a unit/granny flats/house with a budget around 350-450pw in the Devonport surrounding area (we work in Sassafras). Any help will be much appreciated.

Pulled up the flooring in the laundry, only to discover our reno is costing more than an entire house in 1974.

I saw this today in a front yard in Moonah (suburb of Hobart). Any thoughts as to where it is originally from? We think it's just a standard Tasmanian DMR milestone but it may not be.

Conversion Therapy is nothing but damaging and already banned in ACT, VIC, SA, NSW and QLD. The whole premise is built on telling people they're wrong, damaged, lacking, or less than. Shame on you if you can't take your people as they are- and everyone else is none of your business- grow up. Please, read and sign and share. It's really pretty clear. How far backwards do we need to go?
Please sign if you agree. It takes a couple minutes.

Hey people! I'm about to do a Masters in Protected Area Conservation at UTAS. Just wanted to know what's the work opportunities like in Tasmania after finishing such a degree. I know it must be competitive but still how much so ? Also, if i can't find work in Tassie, is it convenient moving elsewhere in Australia to find good work in the environmental/wildlife sector ? I've heard that employment depends a lot on the contacts you build during your masters which would mostly be local contacts so is it a big challenge to try and find work in let's say Queensland, Western Australia etc after a UTAS conservation masters ?

So....are they going to build what they can for $1.13b or are they going to build what the government wants and the skies the limit for the price?
I'm pegging around $1.13b but the list of exclusions will be huge (basically hide the true cost by it not being in one public contract, rather piecemeal approach).

Hey all i was just wondering if understand this correctly.
I vacated my last rental last Wednesday, handing in the keys. I believe that the realestate have 3 days to make a claim, i belive i can claim now? But then they could dispute it?
I spoke with one of them this morning, they said they were finalising their exit report this afternoon? Havent they missed the deadine? Can i deny any claim against my bond for this reason? Does the fact i broke lease early to secure my next rental in this horrible market change anything?
I left the place as best i could, i'm not trying to avoid any responsibility. It's an old building with old building issues that i dont want the headache of disputing. It has been a rough year. I'm so tired of stress.. i just want to rest and recharge for a bit, move onto some positives.

I'm visiting Tasmania from interstate with my family and travelled over on the Spirit of Tasmania.
I parked my car and paid for parking through my phone until 2pm. Unfortunately, my partner suddenly fainted and injured himself, leaving him bleeding from his forehead.
We called the ambos, and while waiting for the paramedic, I was focused on looking after him and making sure he was okay. The paramedics arrived , treated him, and said it was probably a vasovagal episode and that they weren't overly concerned.
Unfortunately, with everything happening, I completely forgot to extend the parking on the app.
When we returned to my car, I found a parking ticket issued at 2:04pm. 4minutes after my parking expired, LOL.
I contacted the council to explain what had happened, hoping they would take the medical emergency into consideration. Instead, they told me I needed to provide a medical certificate explaining how the situation prevented me from paying for additional parking...?
The problem is that we had paramedics attend the incident, but there was no hospital visit or medical certificate issued at the time. We visited a local GP for a check up, and the GP provided a medl certificate the following day. The council rejected that too, apparently because it was dated the day after the incident...?!
I'm frustrated by this. My partner had just fainted, hit his head, and was bleeding. I was dealing with an unexpected medical emergency, not casually ignoring the parking rules.
What sort of medical certificate are you supposed to obtain in the middle of an emergency when you're waiting for an ambulance???????
Has anyone else experienced something similar with a Tasmanian council? Is there any way to challenge this decision, or is there genuinely no discretion for situations like this?
I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has successfully appealed a parking fine under similar circumstances.

The Mercury is reporting that Glenorchy alderman and current mayoral/councillor candidate Peter Ridler was reprimanded, ordered to undertake training and suspended from office for one month following a Code of Conduct investigation.
According to the reported findings, upheld conduct included:
• using the N-word in the expression involving a “woodpile” during a council workshop;
• telling a female council employee words to the effect of “stick to your knitting and get back to the kitchen”;
• putting an arm around a female employee’s waist;
• rubbing another employee’s back while asking her for juice;
• telling a female employee he would have to “crack the whip” to get an annual report produced sooner;
• pulling a female employee’s clothing towards himself to read her name badge; and
• putting his hands on another woman’s shoulders and turning her around so he could read the back of her shirt.
Importantly, not every allegation against Ridler was upheld. The panel dismissed some complaints, including allegations of bullying.
But the panel reportedly found that other conduct brought the office of councillor into disrepute, and described Ridler as displaying a “lack of awareness of modern Australian society, particularly in a workplace.”
Ridler had apparently already been spoken to by the acting CEO about his behaviour in December 2024 and said it would not continue. The panel subsequently described his behaviour as showing “wilful disregard” for that advice.
The determination dates from July 2025, but has only now become public following delays associated with appeals and medical issues.
Ridler is currently asking Glenorchy electors to return him as a councillor and elect him mayor.
Whatever your view of him, this is information Glenorchy voters are entitled to know while voting is underway.
The Mercury story is paywalled, unfortunately. The official TEC candidate statements confirm Ridler is standing for both mayor and councillor.
