How many were made?

u/HuskyLemons 1d ago
Not a whole lot. I mean demand is high enough but it’s still a low volume product compared to any other iPhone. I ordered one so I’m not hating on it, but people should be realistic
103
u/Nashgoth 1d ago
Do we actually know that?
22
u/HuskyLemons 1d ago
We have supplier leaks/rumors, other leaks/rumors from Apple, and the foldable market in general to give a good idea what numbers they are expecting. Obviously there’s some demand for it, but they aren’t producing nearly as many as the iPhone 18 models. So naturally it’s going to sell out quicker and the date will be pushed further. They are limited in how many they can produce so they can’t just order more

u/DeucesX22 1d ago
Anything involving technology is limited. Data centers have caused massive rationing inside the tech market.
21
u/SmellyJockstrap 21h ago
I mean they still sold 8-9 million units in two minutes literally. I finished my preorder at 4:02 and while I thankfully got October 23, by the time I was done it was already late November.

The Iphone Air didn't sell anywhere near what they expected. So it's kind of natural the first production run of flips will likely be pretty cautious. They'll likely see price and demand of the Flip/Duo over like the next 6 months in their first run to determine whether they should greatly increase production or not.
2
u/DZhuFaded 15h ago
Clearly the Air was only made as a byproduct of the development of this phone. They were just trying to make some of their money back

u/No-Significance-5484 1d ago
Guess my kids are getting 2 iPhone Airs and duct tape for Christmas.
How will they survive? Think of the children, Ternus.

Oh man, I remember actually getting excited for new phones. Honestly, there hasn’t been a reason to get excited since the iPhone 4 or maybe that Samsung that turned into a grenade.

13 mini for me. I just want a smaller phone.

Same. The last time I was that excited for a new phone was the 12 mini. Kept it for a year then upgraded to the 13 mini. I still have it now. It’s the perfect size and weight.

I went iphone X, waited to a 15 pro max, now have a Duo on order.
I feel I had a pretty good evolution of iphones.

I also went from X to 15 pro. I'm not planning to upgrade though. the duo can wait a bit, at least until I see some in the wild.

The Retina display was insane at the time. The idea of a display so dense that you could not make out the pixels was simply unheard of.
Now we have displays like that everywhere and we take it for granted.

For me its the iPhone Air 2. Getting an iphone that finally doesnt feel like a brick in my hand, whilst simultaneously having sufficient features and processing power is going to feel pretty liberating.

u/eugene20 1d ago
The only thing that will eventually arrive that will motivate me to buy will be a solid state battery, I will be so happy to move past the possible bomb phase of pocket gadgets.
43
u/Baby_Doomer 1d ago
Have you had a lot of phones explode in your pocket?
47
6
u/eugene20 23h ago
Not yet but I've had to dispose of one properly that had swollen so much overnight as a housemate slept next to it that it had popped the back off the phone, which didn't have a user removable back, it had glass and it was sticking into it. We were all very lucky it didn't actually rupture at the time, that would have been extremely bad sat on their matress.
1
u/axiom_glitch 1d ago
Yeah, 4 was the last one that I was really blown away excited. The IPhone X was the only one since, but still not anywhere near the level of 4.
6
u/old-time-fiddle 23h ago
The 4 was incredible and agree on the X! The iOS 7 upgrade was a lot of fun too, even as someone who’s not a fan of flat design. iOS 6 was peak design 😂
1
u/JohrDinh 11h ago
Give me an iPhone 4-5 with a better battery life and that's all I'd need honestly, barely on my phone anymore after getting rid of social media anyways.

u/SaxAppeal 9h ago
That’s simply not true. iPhone 5 first LTE iPhone, iPhone 6s introduced 3D Touch, iPhone X (no explanation needed), iPhone 13 Pro introduced 120hz screens, 14 pro Dynamic Island. I think since 13 or 14 pro there hasn’t been all that much to be excited about though. But there have been some amazing iPhones since the 4.
61
u/3-DMan 14h ago
Once again, Reddit proves how out of touch they are with what will sell/what people want.
9
u/gumbercules6 10h ago
I laughed at a hugely up voted post on r/technology about how the Duo has a crease. It was hilarious because apple didn't say there was no crease, and the post was how at a certain angle and with certain lighting you can see where the screen bends. It was grasping at straws to have something to hate on.
On top of that, every reviewer was impressed as to how hidden the crease was, so it's not like it was an exaggeration by apple either.
3
u/Unusual_Room3017 8h ago
Agreed. I had bunch of anti-Duo commenters replying back to my initial reaction of “wow. That looks awesome. I plan to get it” and many of the comments were talking about how I must be dumb and that I must not be aware that the camera isn’t the best.
51
u/platocplx 1d ago
Apple has the worst timelines right now if you want unlocked. But carriers do have stock in some configurations. Costco under T-Mobile crazy enough still even has some configs still for launch day. You can get a 1TB at launch for a night sky model.
10
u/ensui67 23h ago
Not for launch day, but, first week of Nov. Not too bad. Definitely better than what Apple is offering.
It was the same when I was preordering. You could see some still available through T mobile for maybe early Nov or a week after launch, while Apple was already backed up to 2027. It was the craziest preorder in possibly forever. Never seen one get back ordered that far. The white ones got sold out instantly while black still had available on tmobile.
5
u/platocplx 23h ago
Yeah feels like scalpers were hitting the apple site
2
u/HillarysFloppyChode 22h ago edited 21h ago
Apples site doesn't require an account to buy a phone, carriers do, thats why it took longer for them to slip.
The easy solution is to require an Apple ID to buy on preorder, prioritize accounts with existing Apple products bought in the last 8 months over accounts started a day before pre order. That basically kneecaps scalpers...this could be used for just about all other places scalpers exist too.
They limit them to 2 per customer, if you have 400 bots running, then thats 800 phones in a matter of seconds and you can restart with them. In a matter of a few seconds, scalpers could buy 2000 phones fairly easily.
My guess is 80% of the demand and "bloodbath" was from bots.
Ill see if Apple actually does anything about them, its actually against Apples own TOS to scalp as it counts as a B2B transaction and Apples consumer store is B2Customer only. If they start canceling them, which they might if enough people bug them about it, those delivery dates should drop significantly across the board.
(this is for the US store atleast)

This kind of crap Is what's confusing me about the economy and how everything Is more expensive including food, fast food, people are losing more and more jobs, etc, yet even though the consensus online is "folding phone too expensive" yet again another device made for consumption is selling out.
How is everyone able to keep affording this absurdly expensive stuff if everyone's out of money and jobs?
74
u/Financial_Clue_2534 20h ago
Well would assume the people buying the phone are not in the same bucket who are struggling. Then again you have some people who don’t mind going into debt or are leasing the phone.

13.5% of US households earn more than 200k. That’s 18 million households. 1 in 7. People can afford to buy things they want.

u/Panda--Monium 13h ago
While most people put things on credit or interest-free financing, when I buy a phone, even though I can usually afford it outright, I would prefer to put it on my interest-free financing. Most people don’t care about the total price of an object. They care about how much it cost per month
So when people go to buy a car, they don’t really care how much they’re gonna spend over the long haul. They’ve already mentally told themselves that they are always gonna have a car payment every month and whatever number they’re comfortable with is the car they get. Same with the phone. Most people are under the impression that they will always have some type of a phone payment every month, so why not just get the newest phone if you’re gonna have a payment every month anyway

Doom buying + K shaped economy.
A lot of people are buying things on credit beyond their means . They spend out of habit and poor judgment in a culture that has made the rich idols and made purchasing things they want a core identity. They aren’t concerned for the long term consequences of those decisions because they think somebody or something will bail them out, as they’ve seen with stuff like the financial crisis and pandemic. But it’s self fulfilling that they do that and then are struggling. We have an parasitic media landscape and advertising industry that makes people feel truly like shit if they don’t have nice stuff. We’ve lost all semblance of being humble and frugal.
That and the second part that post pandemic inequality has risen sharply.
3
u/NMe84 17h ago
Just because it sells out doesn't necessarily say much about how many units are being sold. It just says that more are being sold than Apple was projecting.
Let's say they wanted to test the waters first and only made half a million of them. If those sell out, that just means there are more than half a million people who want one, but you have no way of knowing if the total amount of people who would want one is one million, or three hundred million.
Other than that, not everyone is doing bad in this economy. My girlfriend and I in a country that's doing well and work in jobs that pay well and are relatively secure. I wouldn't get this device because I really don't see the point, but if I wanted one, I wouldn't have to save up for it for very long. Which is not meant as a brag, but more to say that there are groups of people who don't have the same problems as others with the current economical situation.

11
u/-justiciar- 21h ago
in that case, you aren’t really in their target market.
it’s like luxury cars or other high priced goods, if you have to double take at the price then you’re probably in the fringe of their targeted customer
(now i’m not saying an iphone duo is the rolls royce of cars or anything)

I use my coffee mug daily. You don't value things based on how much you use them. You value them based on reasonable cost comparison to an alternative and if that cost is worth it.
I would argue for most people there financial situation makes buying a 2k+ phone absurd. Even if they use the phone 10 hours a day the dropoff from that and a $200 phone that is simply from 2025 is not as big as the financial difference
→ More replies (3)2
3
u/cyhlalala 17h ago
why? 2k is not a lot of money for many many many people. Just look at all the high fashion bags, and clothes, people spend 15k on handbags, 2k on a tshirt, 5k on a dress, 8k on a suit, etc. 2k is really not a lot for the upper class or even the middle upper class. I live in singapore, look up how much a car costs here. 2k is a tiny fraction of that.

It shouldn’t blow your mind. These guys would’ve estimated the market and seen that there was demand for 5-7 million phones or at least verbal demand and they would’ve made 3 million phones (which is probably why the price is at $1999) and then when the product was launched they got ample feedback from the market that there is demand for 5-7 million phones. So first thing they do is come out and say the item is sold out and the next thing is they say that demand is through the roof so those who are near the ledge or on the ledge decide to take the leap because of FOMO. This is that Initial bump because of the unique nature of the product. Will they have the same demand next year or the year after that with this price? That will remain to be seen.

u/TacohTuesday 10h ago
It’s a lot, yes. But I use my phone many hours a day, more than anything else in my life pretty much. I’ve thought carefully about my use case. The bigger display plus very pocketable form factor will absolutely change the game for me. I work hard and can afford it. So yes, I’m upgrading a one year old Pro (which I normally never do) to get this. So is my wife.

u/sansaman 1d ago
I’ll wait for the gen 3 to release, then get the gen 2 for cheaper, and fixes any potential issues with a new category device.
That or the 20th anniversary iPhone.
16
u/tastes_a_bit_funny 23h ago
That’ll show ‘em!
9
u/Warm_Adhesiveness934 22h ago
I don’t think that’s OP meant. The thing with Apple products is that the first gen ages the fastest. iPhone 2G, iPad, Apple Watch, iPhone X, all of them became obsolete really fast compared to the 2nd and 3rd gen of them.
2
u/starmiemd 19h ago
Hard disagree on the iPhone X, IMO that was the first iPhone in years that made me feel like I really had to force myself to upgrade.
2
u/nstrasner 21h ago
Ok and the 3g aged the second fastest and 4 the third fastest and 5 the fourth fastest…if you never buy a product you want because a better one will exist next year you’ll just never buy something you enjoy. No problem waiting for next gen but future obsolescence shouldn’t be the reason. Unless you keep phones for 5 years I guess
Edit: I missed a 3GS and 4s in there but you get my point

u/Kubotai77 15h ago
That’s good and all. But depending on your phone carrier, for example if AT&T, you could’ve traded in the iPhone 13 last year for like $900-1200 depending on model and gotten the iPhone 17 for $0 or maybe a couple bucks a month.
Now your phone is worth like $100-200 trade in at most.
A long time ago it used to be free phones for signing a 3 year contract but they changed to the trade-in model instead.
It’s perfectly fine to use something until it breaks but it’s also not a bad idea to upgrade whenever your line is eligible for what amounts to a free upgrade.

There’s plenty of people holding on to iPhone models much older than 15 and looking to upgrade so don’t see why it’s a big deal. Not everyone is going from 17 to duo or 18

I went through his post history it's basically him being Superior to others.
He seems to focus mostly on his wages and intellectual superiority because he's a software guy so that tracks 😂

A lot of people are thriving now, despite what Reddit says. It's an issue with how split it is, of course. Plenty aren't doing well

With all talk of consumers’ negative outlook of the economy, you wouldn’t expect demand for such luxury tech products to be this high.

I understand the points being made here, and you're right its a new toy. I don't need it, my iphone 15 pro works great, and I'm retired certainly dont need it for work. That being said i did preorder an unlocked one, with a Dec delivery :)

Got one for the wife for the upgrade cycle. She was meh on it but I really wanted to see what it looked like in person so we got it. Nov 13th….hope to get it earlier. We did try to go for the memory size with the fastest arrival

The thing I hate about E-waste is that they make it so easy for phone upgrades to be cheaper than using a phone for a long time until it doesn’t work great anymore. I was going to keep my iPhone 13 Pro for years, maybe even just replace the battery, but my carrier had a trade-in promotion that basically meant I got the iPhone 17 Pro for free. I felt bad about contributing to ewaste but it was more economical to buy the new phone that would last longer than to keep my old one. I hope they recycled or refurbished it at least
