Britain's Sonay Kartal 24 year old ranked 170 (due to long injury break this year) vs Poland's Maja Chwalinska (16) 25 year old ranked 22 and 2026 RG finalist.
I am cheering for both and excited for them! A much deserved and hard fought journey for both ladies in this tournament.
With reaching this final, Kartal will be British WTA #1 next week and return to top 50.

Amazing masterclass of doubles strategy from both sides. Brilliant lobs, crosses, interceptions and angles. Errani and Paolini was in the lead for the whole match and up 9-4 in the tiebreak but Siniakova and Storm kept coming back. Could be match of the year.
They face Dabrowski and Stefani (1) in the finals.

As of right now, 11 players have confirmed to have ended their 2026 seasons both on the ATP and WTA combined, pardon me if I missed any:
ATP: Jannik Sinner (knee injury), Joao Fonseca (injury prone season and incomplete recovery), Jack Draper (bone bruise + knee injury)
WTA: Amanda Anisimova (wrist injury), Anastasia Potapova (right shoulder injury), Clara Tauson (Calf injury + mental reset), Emma Navarro (RED-S), Victoria Mboko (MCL), Hailey Baptiste (ACL), Madison Keys, Eva Lys.
It's not just these players, but even players who have taken quite a bit time off because of injuries as well: Carlos Alcaraz (wrist injury), ADF (back injury), Lorenzo Musetti (multiple injuries), Holger Rune (Achilles), Taylor Fritz (knee issues), FAA (knee issues), Marta Kostyuk (wrist injury), Elena Rybakina (left foot injury), Iga Swiatek (left quad injury), Sonay Kartal (back injury), Emma Raducanu (foot fracture).
It's even the physically durable WTA players such as Coco and Iga, who are even retiring in matches lately which isn't normal at all.
Is it fair to say tennis has evolved too much? We lived in an era with the Big 3 and players like Serena who kept on winning so much, but since then player longevity has dwindled down. The game has massively changed night and day now as it was back then. And no, I don't need to hear the BS of the ATP matches were bo5 as well then and that they played way more tournaments. The WTA also has so many more B2B tournaments for no reason at all, especially at the start of the year (Middle East swing) and the end of the year (Asian swing).
The biggest difference in racket technology, balls, court surfaces and the tennis calendar needs to be taken a proper look at, at the moment. Else watching a season like 2026 where it's basically giving "Survival of the fittest" is not enjoyable in the slightest. Let alone the fact that injuries + mental burnout has been the biggest theme of this season.

With a statement on his IG account he announces to focus on the 2027 season and will skip the remaining tournaments this year to properly recover.
This means he won't be able to defend his Basel title and will drop out of the seeded rankings, so likely to be unseeded at AO.

Liutova picks up another top 100 win with a dominant victory over the second seed and world #85. She'll play either Julieta Pareja or [5] Sloane Stephens in the final.
