Football Anyone still defending Locksley isn’t a true fan

https://x.com/terrapins247/status/2103964868571246645?s=46

Maryland football closed as just 1.5-point underdogs.

They lost by 51.

The 49.5-point swing against the spread is one of the largest in the history of organized football.

A defeat of almost incomprehensible proportions.

Some people don’t want him fired

Then they can continue being embarrassed every week during football season

I will confess to wanted to lose this game because a win might have kept him around even longer. But now there's got to be zero chance

The past couple weeks have been unfortunate watching Torrey out himself as an absolute fool. One of my favorite Terps of all time and one of my favorite Ravens of all time, but good lord, he is having a meltdown right now and it’s tough to watch

People on twitter said Torrey is only supporting Locksley because he is black

Oh, well, if people on Twitter said it, it must be true.

I don’t know why they were saying it

Locksleys best attribute is his ability to create meaningful relationships with young men in the community and maintain those relationships as they grow. Can't fault Torren for supporting the guy whos been in his corner since high school. He's too close to the situation to be objective.

All Terp fans should be appreciative of what Locks has brought to the program for the last 25+ years. We all desperately wanted him to be successful. It just didn't work out.

That's without getting into the shenanigans about 'interviewing for NFL jobs' in an effort to squeeze more money and years out of UMD.

Appreciative? For what lol. Dude has fleeced Maryland by getting an absolute bag and being a dog shit football coach for years now

Dude, he’s brought nothing to the program but failure. Programs rebuilt and turned around across the country but not in College Park. Look at his in conference win/loss record.

Thoughts on MD football in the early 2000s?

Idc about Maryland football so we shouldn't be wasting money buying out Locksley. That money better spent on basketball.

Tell that to Indiana two years ago

Having a poor football program won’t help basketball look how duke is investing in football.

2

u/1Donk 21d ago

Do you know how much money Duke has? Not apples to apples in NIL era. If academics weren’t an issue they could buy top 25 every year no problem

Been saying this for years. Football has generally sucked over the past 4 decades. We’re a basketball school. Stop trying to make fetch happen.

9

u/YankeePride11 21d ago

Dumb take. Even basketball schools have switched to massive football investments. Football actually funds other sports including basketball. Football pays the bills not basketball.

2

u/havox22 21d ago

Yeah look at UCLA

A basketball school that we blew out in football a few years ago just won the national championship in football. Guess it’s a good thing for them they didn’t just stop trying

Terrible side of history to be on. I'm ashamed.

That’s a moronic statement. You can be a true Maryland fan and still think whatever you want.

I don’t like Locksley as HC. I think I like people gatekeeping college football even less.

Maybe FCS is a better fit for Maryland football.

I agree that Locksley is a bad head coach, and I agree that he has to go. He's a guy that should have had the self awareness to know his niche is as a coordinator and recruiter, and none of what I am about to say can even begin if he's still roaming the sideline. With that said, anyone that thinks a new coach coming in will immediately turn the tide and make Maryland a winner is delusional.

A new coach will not make this a successful program. That is going to take years, maybe decades, hundreds of millions of dollars or more in long term investments, and a hope that some coaches, players, and donors buy into being the ground floor of a full rebuild. From what I see there isn't even a foundation upon which a successful program in the modern game can be built. There needs to be a nearly full teardown and rebuild if they want anything other than a few good years here and there.

Maryland is so far behind even middling programs in so many areas that it's almost hard to overstate. The practice and training facilities are subpar at best, laughably bad at worst. The stadium is small, and not the good kind of small where it's historic and unwelcoming for opposing teams, like Cole was in its final decade. The fan interest is non-existent. Go to OSU or PSU and they'll pack close to 100,000 per game in there every week even if the team isn't having a good year. We are on this sub because we care, but the empty seats and opposing colors at every home game show that we may be the only ones with that level of passion.

Winning brings interest and money, and interest and money bring winning. Right now the program has none of the above.

Indiana, UCLA, Miss St., Florida......with the portal and NIL programs can turn around quickly

2

u/pew-pew-bacca 21d ago

Every one of those schools has significantly more NIL money than MD. Where is the money going to come from?

2

u/kookoofunpants 20d ago

If Miss State has significantly more NIL than us, just shutter the program. No point in playing this game.

0

u/pew-pew-bacca 20d ago

Google search has Mississippi State around $30m to Maryland's $20m.

2

u/kookoofunpants 20d ago

Well shutter the program then.

1

u/atblazek 20d ago

I agree with you. They do have more cash than UMD. I think the right coach can get us to the 9-10 win range, then when that coach leaves, UMD is a much more attractive job for a better candidate.

Ask alum? Friends of the University? I would be shaking the trees for sure. Kevin Plank not doing so hot these days?
