Vehicles - Roadster Tesla: Beyond the limits of physics - multi-mode fan & ground sealing system generating enough suction to hold it upside down while stationary

Curious about the crash test videos when those COPVs are filled and burst.
It would make sense to blanket them in Kevlar like it's done on drag cars with their transmissions.
Much appreciation for Tesla trying something new. There is too much vanilla out there. This may be too rocky road, but I love the innovation!

Really wished they just focused on making really good cars, instea of all this hypbuilding nonsense.

u/CousinEddysMotorHome 1d ago
Nah, we want the roadster. They already have the best evs, they can make this. Sit back and relax bud.

u/radio3030 New to the sub 1d ago
It's a grifting machine not a car company
5
u/ChunkyThePotato 1d ago
This "not a car company" makes an electric car that has been the top selling car in the world in recent years. Your delusion is hilarious to watch.

u/fnblackbeard New to the sub 1d ago
The Model Y is also the best selling car IN THE WORLD lmao
These people are beyond delusional

They only ran it in one race. FIA gave it permission to run for the season but Brabham withdrew it themselves, because Ecclestone was team boss and was more interested in the politics.
Lauda hated it but did win that race in it, mostly because he was Lauda (and Andretti broke down)
3
u/RobinSage43 New to the sub 1d ago
I actually met Andretti before! My high school used to take us on trips to see the Martin Guitar factory in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. Andretti apparently lives across the street from the factory and was there on a tour the same day that my class were. So they went on the entire tour with us.
Anyway, the F1 drivers apparently didn't like the Brabham BT46 because of the way that the fan was tied into the drivetrain. Because of this design, they had to stay on throttle in order for the fan to work. Meaning that lifting off throttle would cause you to lose all of the downforce at once and would lose control of the vehicle.
Because of this quirk, the drivers had to keep it in the throttle throughout the entire corner. That is a massive divergence away from their normal driving styles, as they are supposed "drive with the pedals" by balancing throttle and brake to make the car yaw a corner properly. So this forced everyone to relearn how to drive basically.

My parents had a house from like 1910 and it had a fan in it, big whoop!
Ancient Egyptians had fans like 5k years ago

I can see the Formula One engineers watching, sitting there saying: "You know . . ."

The first F1 suction fan car was introduced in the late 1970’s. The tech has been banned from the sport for nearly 5 decades…

Every motorsport has their set of rules to define their type of racing. F1 doesn't want that type of tech.
7
u/LilAbeSimpson 2d ago
Because there are rules in racing. Many many many rules and regulations that are designed to make the vehicles mostly equal in performance.
Various ideas and concepts are banned every year. Just like an all compressed gas booster nonsense on this car will be banned from every public roadway in the US.
2
2
u/Envelope_Torture 2d ago
Why not? They don't want that to be part of the racing so they banned it. F1 has tons of stuff that's allowed and not allowed.
For example, in 2026, despite having 50% of their total power coming from an electric motor, they don't allow front axle regen braking. As a result on certain tracks the cars are starved for power.

u/NetJnkie 2d ago
They already know...and have known.

McMurtry Spéirling did it first, looks much better and is available now.
8
u/Souomaismau New to the sub 2d ago
Dont get the downvotes. Mcmurtry is breaking circuito records all over the world. O-100 km/h is 1,5s. Can corner up to 3g… this means there is a car in sale for the last 3 years that already as an excelent implementation of this technology

2
u/trengilly 1d ago
The Spéirling is also not street legal and they are limiting production to 100 units at 1.4 million US dollars each so good luck getting one.
4
u/theexile14 2d ago
I looked it up, the appearance is very much a taste thing. It could go either way. My actual take is....that thing is a car for ants. It's tiny.
5

u/Slogstorm 2d ago
And not road legal.
7
u/waitses New to the sub 2d ago
This will also not be road legal.
0
u/Slogstorm 2d ago
Only the rocket model isn't road legal. Both the performance and the thrust model are marketed right now as road legal.
Thrust model obviously won't be approved for all markets.
4
u/AdventurousDress576 New to the sub 2d ago
The fans aren't road legal because you cause damage to the surface, and kick up manhole covers.
2
u/WorldlyNotice 1d ago
The Gordon Murray T.50 is road legal, although the fan suction obviously isn't in the same league.
1
u/AdventurousDress576 New to the sub 1d ago
In the T.50, the fan is not sucking the car to the ground. It is there to improve the performance of the diffuser, by allowong a steeper angle than what would be possible without one.
1
u/Guuggel New to the sub 1d ago
It still sucks and blows debris from the ground, it’s not as extreme as Speirling or the Tesla but it still can cause unfortunate things.
1
u/miraculum_one 1d ago
I was wondering about that. For the sucking, where does the air come out? If it sucks up debris is that going to be flung at nearby people/vehicles?

Hyperloop ready! I forgot about that project because its boring company now.
7
u/Logitech4873 1d ago
Hyperloop went nowhere. Boring Company is not doing Hyperloop.
2
u/BuyElectrical3479 New to the sub 1d ago
Yet boring exist and is tunnelling around as we speak. Ask yourself why that is? Is it because of Elon or because of the government and their ridiculous regulations and processes in order to do any infrastructure projects?
2
u/Logitech4873 1d ago
Because they wanted to dig tunnels for whatever. It doesn't matter. It's not related to Hyperloop, and it's not intended to be Hyperloop.
Why are you so caught up on this?
0
u/BuyElectrical3479 New to the sub 1d ago
Do you know absolutely nothing about engineering, just because the version of hyperloop you are used to seeing won't materialize. But tunnels are capable of doing the same thing by using vacuum. See you want reasons to dismiss his ability but have no understanding of application and applied engineering. Elon has an interview with media in the Las Vegas boring company tunnel, and he explains that you can reach those same speeds of hyperloop.

u/Kuberos New to the sub 1d ago
And exactly how is this beyond the limits of physics? Did they open the fifth dimension?
1
u/sorestgore New to the sub 1d ago
It's more like physics at its limits.
1
u/Kuberos New to the sub 1d ago
If they can land a Super Heavy Booster rocket, it's not.... rocket science to make a lightweight mule car drive up a ramp and land.
It has been done before, as others have pointed out.
There is not a beyond or near limits of physics. It's all perfectly according to physics, otherwise it would not be possible. There is no hard stop of physics. You can't use a catchy tag line and pretend it has scientific objective meaning. Even if they manage to do something entirely new, like open a wormhole in the frunk at their next ridiculous attention event. It will, again, be nicely according to physics.
2
u/sorestgore New to the sub 1d ago
I was joking bud. It's 100% physics being normal physics, and just really well applied technology
-4
u/Merkenfighter New to the sub 2d ago
If this comes to market (big IF), it will sell even fewer vehicles than the cybershit. It’s a boondoggle.
2
u/Northwindlowlander New to the sub 1d ago
As ever, it just remains to be seen if it ever exists as a real world car that anyone can buy, and if it meets the promises.
I'll happily bet 20 scottish pence that it never does but you never know.
2
u/b58over2jz New to the sub 2d ago
At 3x the price it was never intended to be a volume car anyways.
1
u/Medium_Notice_3512 New to the sub 2d ago
Just think of the development of this car as part of the advertising budget in that light, it delivers a 10000% return on every dollar spent.
2
u/NiceWeather4Leather New to the sub 1d ago
Wtf are you talking about? Will sales of 3/Y double next month?
-1
u/Medium_Notice_3512 New to the sub 1d ago
There won’t be a doubling, since there are no vehicle stocks available. However, it will serve as a strong sales booster for several years, thanks to endless discussions, debates, and the like.

u/jamesbretz 1d ago
As a marketing professional, you are delusional.

u/ChunkyThePotato 1d ago edited 1d ago
Since you're such a professional, you should explain why halo cars are actually stupid to all the companies that make them.
1
u/jamesbretz 1d ago
Yeah, sure. It won’t exist beyond this. You’re gonna be stroking your boner to this same video for eternity because it won’t go beyond this. This is pure smooth brain satiation.
1
u/ChunkyThePotato 1d ago
Did you also say that Cybertruck would never release? Or Model Y? Or Model 3? Plenty of people did, and they were all wrong.
And for the record, I hardly care about Roadster. It's just a cool flex, and I'm not in a position to own one anyway. I care way more about things like Cybercab. Things that are actually world-changing. That's what I love.
1
u/jamesbretz 1d ago
No, I didn’t. And that is a poor comparison because all of those were actually realistic. This is, as directly stated in the demo, a fever dream. The impracticality of this is clearly represented by how the market responded to it.
1
u/ChunkyThePotato 1d ago
Lmao, quit rewriting history. Plenty of people said the others were unrealistic. Cybertruck was the most recent one, and I remember all those silly redditors saying for years that it would never actually come out. Of course, they were wrong, and you will be too, because you don't learn from those mistakes.
The market is irrelevant. This is a toy that has almost zero effect on the company's financials. It's a hypercar, and hypercars are never planned to be big sellers. Tesla stock goes up and down by 2% basically every day, so it's hilarious that you think a fluctuation like that means anything. Shows how much you know.

Um, duh? Did you think a hypercar is supposed to sell hundreds of thousands of units per year?

Might as well buy an MG Cyberster by now. While a complete ripoff, it does however exist.
