Mod Announcement This is NOT a serious subreddit

Greetings folks, just a polite reminder the posts here are meant to be mocking nonchalantly given ‘solutions’ to complicated problems, not genuine advice.

For example, someone advising someone to go to hospital and get some help for a serious problem wouldn’t be a good fit here. However, someone just saying ‘get over it’ or ‘walk it off’ would.

On another note, this is not a political sub. We’re not here to criticise government policy.

Hope this helps!

Mod Announcement What is/isn’t allowed?

Hi everyone. I’m seeing a lot of ‘off topic’ posts. I tend leave as much as possible and let you all decide with downvotes/upvotes.

However please take the time to remember rule 7, I’ll put it here:

Rule 7: Must fit the subreddit theme.

It has to be true "Thanks, I'm cured" material. I.e., a non-nonchalantly delivered, overly simplistic solution to a complex problem.

Serious solutions that may not work for everyone do not belong. For example, the mantra "You deserve to be happy," helps some and not others.

Motivational quotes do not belong unless they imply or state that an illness is purely psychological with no physical basis.

If you’re still confused about what does/doesn’t belong, take a look through some of the top posts of all time and you’ll get the idea.

If your post breaks the rules it may be removed.

Any questions or concerns feel free to let us know. Thanks. 🗿

my symptoms of arfid go back to me being 2years old (depending the line where picky eating begins and normal small child behavior ends is a difficult one). I hate when people use the "we are what was given or we starved" argument against me. I don't blame my parents for this because they were older and were at their wits end with a picky child and didn't have any sense of direction outside of what their parents told them to do but guess what?? my parents DID send me to bed hungry. I WASN'T allowed to leave the table. they did ALL that. you know why they stopped? because I was becoming underweight and the doctors were worried. when I was a child arfid wasn't a thing that was known about my doctors even told my parents that it was just a phase I'll grow out of it. it's been 20+ years I'm still incapable of eating fruits and vegetables. YES I know it's unhealthy. YES I am worried about my health. I wish I could eat vegetables it's not easy when your brain sounds the poison alarm at every new food like for fucks sake why is everyone so invested in my eating habits

Story What one Doctor said to me

He said,

"Why are you using that crutch?, you wouldn't have any problems if you put it down and walk normally!"

In response to my forearm crutch that I needed to keep from falling while trying to find out what was causing health issues.

I was later diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

I'm tired of being told the same things when I bring up how mental illness makes dating a struggle. I get where the criticism is coming from. But when you've spent years trying to force yourself to improve only to backslide at every turn "just succeed" rings incredibly hollow.

Discussion Telling people who are lonely, overwhelmed, grieving or going through a lot to “just go volunteer” or “just get therapy.”🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

People always are spouting off on social media or in person for someone who is lonely or going through a tough time to “just reach out” if they need a friend, yt they are the same self-absorbed, insensitive jerks who will tell the lonely person to “just go volunteer” or “just get therapy.” Come to think of it, there are a lot of people like that who dispense those two gems.

Heaven forbid they should inconvenience themselves in the slightest by showing some empathy or occasionally checking on or including the person who’s struggling.

Golly gee, thanks, Captain Obvious. I never would’ve thunk of it. How ever would I have solved all of my problems if you hadn’t told me those two marvelous hacks?🙄

A person who’s grieving or feeling lonely and overwhelmed most likely already is running on empty and has given too much of themselves to others. They damn sure aren’t going to have the energy to expend on volunteering. Sure, let’s tell them to give even more of themselves when they’re already spent instead of showing them a little love or care like they too deserve. And is it just me or does it seem like the people always giving this “advice” are those for whom life has been much easier, who have support systems and who aren’t having to “reach out?”

Not trying to knock therapy, but it’s not an instant or surefire cure-all and the advice givers seem to overlook the facts that therapy is a crapshoot, therapists with availability — particularly good ones — are hard if not impossible to find, and they are outrageously expensive. Not everyone qualifies for low-cost mental health care and many of those people have had to buy their insurance off the marketplace. Ridiculously high deductibles and monthly premiums mean the out of pocket cost just isn’t doable or worth it.

IRL “When I can’t get out of bed I just make myself do it”

Said by a friend of mine after I was trying to explain why I was so late to work today. I physically couldn’t get out of bed for an hour. When I finally put my feet on the floor I chanted yes yes yes yes YES!!! Because I was so happy to be out of bed. I don’t know how to explain that I’m not just tired. I tried to “make myself do it” for an hour. It’s a tiredness that goes down to my bones even if I DO get a full nights sleep. I wish I could “just make myself do it” but how do I explain to a healthy person that just because I “seem” fine doesn’t mean our bodies are the same.

IRL Plan for a future I don't want.

I spoke with someone who I honestly respect a lot because they're a good person at heart and mean well. I stonewalled for an IOP assessment by refusing to answer questions I didn't like. Which was basically all of them. It got to the point where they talked about drug history. I told them I didn't really remember but I have no preference for drugs I'm not an addict. This was the last straw they kicked me out.

So this was a different person who did the assessment their boss basically spoke with me about it. He got me to open up a bit about my mind state and what I'm going through every day. He even talked me through to a point where he realized that I'm super unhappy all the time and don't want to answer questions. I just fake a smile most days for people. I'm rambling but long story short he explained how I need to see a doctor and such to take care of my mental health, I gotta do that if I want to have a good future.

He means well but doesn't get that I don't want any future at all. I want to be dead within the next ten years. I'm honestly just saving up enough money to get myself a place where if I slip off into a fentanyl overdose nobody even notices it until it's far to late to narcan me.

Drugs make me feel better but after doing time in prison and realizing how easy it is to get sent there and do serious time potentially life. I would much rather just be by myself and get high alone. Until the day that I don't wake up from the high and it's over.

I genuinely believe that most people who say this are racist themselves, but don't want people talking about it so racism can become more normalized again and they can be as racist as they want.

Social Media Do ableds genuinely think that physical disabilities copy paste the exact symptoms omto each person that has them?

Post image

"Someone else with a disability achieved this? Well surely everyone with that disability can!"

At some point you have to wonder if they think we're made in a lab.

For the record, I don't have any of these conditions and I literally said in another comment that I plan to work out when I get my own stuff under control, but yknow. It's hard for people like that to imagine disabilities... gasp varying... so I understand his confusion. After all, he did reply this after I made the grievious error of politely correcting someone on how disabilities affect exercise.

for context, op has bipolar disorder and migraines and this was the response…. this is such dangerous rhetoric to push around serious mental disorders. i really hate the “just diet and exercise and you’ll be fine!!” mentality cause it doesn’t actually get to the root of it most of the time especially when your brain is genetically predisposed to mental illness.
