don't feel sorry for that guy one bit. follow the traffic rules and you won't get pushed 10 feet by a dumptruck

Are you american? Personally as one myself, i feel for all pedestrians even if they are completely in the wrong. He we are with three lanes in every direction, two turning lanes every left, just a massive costly intersection. We obviously have the means to make paths for pedestrians that dont interact with vehicles at all

He was not a pedestrian. He was riding a scooter with an electric motor and going too fast for the truck to realize he was crossing against the light.

Cool. The point is that it is possible to make paths for all non-cars that keep them from interacting. It's possible and it's much safer. Yes the scooter was behaving foolishly, AND yes America has crap design.

Why should local taxpayers have to pay for extra infrastructure in order to protect people from their own stupidity?

This guy decided to ignore the flashing lights and exercise zero caution while crossing the street, what are the chances that he would ignore a pedestrian bridge as well?

It may shock you to learn that this video is not the only time a car has hit a person. It may shock you even more to learn that sometimes, the mistake is caused by the driver. Quite often in fact.

America's designs are weighed heavily in favor of cars VS anything else, which makes these incidents much more common. These incidents are reduced by good design.

Good design also makes active transportation much faster and more attractive, meaning more people use it and less people drive. That decreases costs for the people who aren't driving, and also decreases road wear which is quite expensive. It's not a zero-sum game here, this is good for cities.

You didn't answer my question. Why is it incumbent on local taxpayers to try and prevent every accident?

I live in a decent sized suburb of Detroit, we have one intersection with pedestrian bridges and that cost about a million dollars 20 years ago. To get just the major intersections in my town it would be at least $20-25 million. The city's annual budget is just under $50 million.

That's a lot of money to fix a problem that doesn't actually exist. Millions of people in America cross the street everyday without issue and yes, accidents and tragedies still happen, but it's not viable to throw a million+ dollars at every intersection

What do you think it means when you say "local taxpayers"? Maybe you could just use the term "people". Why should people allocate some taxes to make their cities better and safer, in ways that actually give back to them and ultimately reduce overall costs? Yeah that's a hard one.

BTW the problem of pedestrian injury and fatality is a growing one, and as I made clear in my last comment, the solutions solve many problems at once, problems that absolutely do exist.

u/DrUnit42 2h ago

There have been 3 pedestrian deaths in my town in the last 5 years, only one was at an intersection and all of them were the fault of the pedestrian.

Should my city spend the equivalent of 50% of their annual budget to still have accidents like that?

Your ideas may sound good in whiteroom theory space, but it's not necessary or practical in the real world

not necessary

yep, if people die they die

...carbrains lol. i mean i do agree. why do we waste money on stupid shit like physical boundaries between different directions of oncoming traffic? why bother with painting lanes? it's such a waste of taxpayer money. if drivers werent morons they would be able to drive just fine without these taxpayer funded training wheels

While I appreciate your concern for the common village idiot in America (and boy do we have plenty), any sort of design you're speaking of, at some point is going to depend on its participants following a pre existing, agreed upon set of practices, rules etc.

So the problem you're describing is likely to remain, the video isnt a result of our traffic rules & practices favoring automobiles- it's a result of the scooter having 0 regard for any of the rules & practices that do currently exist

This dumb ass would've blown through any type of "do not cross" sign, red light, etc in your imaginary pedestrian Utopia- and even in a world where pedestrians & automobiles dont cross paths, he likely would remain a risk to himself and others, as chances are high of him hitting a walking pedestrian, damaging property or just wiping out hard af

But maybe the world that your new traffic design exists in is made of pillows and everyone wears football pads & helmet when walking around.

Stupid is as stupid does, so what are ya gonna do ya know?

I mean, both things can be true at the same time. America used to be walkable until automakers in the 1920’s swayed lawmakers to make walking on the street illegal. So since greedy capitalists are more concerned with how much money they can squeeze from people than the actual people themselves, America by and large is not a walkable country. And no, I’m not talking about literally walking from one coast to another (although it is included), I’m talking about being able to walk from a neighborhood to a shopping center. There are instances where you can easily walk from a neighborhood to a shopping center, but for the most part, it’s very difficult and “illegal” to do so.

And also, idiots are everywhere. This dumbass might have done what he was doing in any scenario. The less we invest in public education, the more idiots we have.

And also, if we had better, more walkable infrastructure, these stupid scooters probably wouldn’t be as popular as they are and we’d have a different culture regarding pedestrian/vehicle safety

How is a pedestrian/"non-car" supposed to cross streets if they don't interact?

6

u/No_Foundation468 2h ago

That would be my question.

Clearly it would be realistic to build pedestrian overpasses at every interaction in the US.

And then likely a second overpass for bicycle and scooter traffic. /s

The person you're replying to is clownish in the extreme.

u/Forsaken_Insurance92 2h ago

With difference entrances to every single parking lot/building, because otherwise they'd have to interact with areas with cars, too. Parking lots are dangerous, too, so there'd have to be different parking lots.

They don't seem to understand the difference between possible and feasible.

What country do you believe has superior intersection design? Give one or two examples of intersections designed like you're describing so we can look at them.

u/Gralb_the_muffin 1h ago

I think the design is perfectly fine. There's a crosswalk. There is a lit up sign that tells you whether it's time to cross or not. This guy went against it.

You know you could have a tunnel underneath the road with a bunch of signs and arrows telling people where they can go to cross safely and there'd still be idiots like this guy who will ignore all the signs and walk, or ride in this case, straight into traffic.

If people are too stupid for the current design I don't think any other design is going to help cuz you can't fix stupid

"Look both ways before you cross the street"

Dumbass on a scooter didn't even follow rule #1 of being a pedestrian

u/NoBuenoAtAll 3h ago

Your comment makes me remember this: whenever I’m driving I hate pedestrians. Whenever I’m walking I hate cars. Either way I hate somebody on a fucking bicycle or scooter.

u/9447044 11h ago

Dud is lucky a 20 ton vehicle can stop that fast.

I watched a dude almost get wiped out crossing on his Ebike yesterday. He was yelling like the red hand ment go

23

u/taylorhildebrand 11h ago

This shit happens in Orlando all the time. And these assholes on their scooters will flip off traffic driving through an intersection with a green light

17

u/YouWithTheNose 8h ago

It's kinda crazy how many people don't know or choose to ignore that traffic laws apply to cyclists and crosswalks governed by the signals still matter.

15

u/Jimlee1471 6h ago

As a bicycle commuter myself I'm usually the first one to give carbrains hell because anything on less than 4 wheels tends to be invisible to them.

But, in this case, the scooter rider is 100% wrong. One of the first things you learn as a kid is to not go blindly charging into an intersection and this clip is a damned fine example of why that is. Hoping he learned something that day, but he probably didn't.

u/Verthanthi 3h ago

Everyone in the “it won’t/hasn’t happen/ed to me” crowd is the problem. Then when it inevitably does, they’re shocked because they’ve been this dangerous for YEARS, what do you MEAN there are consequences??? Then they go into a “it won’t happen again” unfortunately

There are traffic lights for a reason

6

u/tehCharo 5h ago

These fucks riding Lime bikes and scooters are a menace, they do this constantly in Seattle and ride through red lights and traffic or running you off the sidewalk.

3

u/Beautiful-Bad5203 4h ago

No one wants to hit a pedestrian, especially not in a large, heavy truck. Way to ruin someone's day by being foolish.

3

u/Digiee-fosho 6h ago

His trick to surviving this was having the big toe on his right foot pointed down and the other pointed up.

3

u/KUweatherman 3h ago

Watched traffic camera footage from my city recently where someone did the same thing. Came zooming through the crosswalk on an e-moto as the light was green for car traffic. Dude got absolutely smoked by a car. Lost a flip flop and everything. The guy got up, grabbed his flip flop, back on his e-moto, and took off. If I were the car he hit, I'd have been pissed.
