Who do you think should’ve walked Rebecca through the train? S6Ep17

Just finished another rewatch. I remember when it first came out I didn’t really have any opinions on the train scene. But now, I’m curious if yall could rewrite the train scene, would you change anything? Specifically, would you have someone besides William guide Rebecca?

My only note/preference is I wish Miguel was shown longer. They were married for awhile but she also just knew him for a very long time. Also kinda sad that Deja and Tess got like 0.5 seconds

I’m really excited for it! She talked about The Land on this week’s episode of That Was Us and it sounds like Mandy’s playing a very different character from Rebecca. I’m looking forward to seeing her branch out and the cast looks good too! William H. Macy who played Frank on Shameless plays her dad. Omar Epps who played Malik’s dad is in it! They just announced yesterday the first 2 episodes drop after The Superbowl! Very fitting!

Rewatching the S6 Thanksgiving Episode

I am almost done with my rewatch of the entire show!

And I remember really loving Kevin's whole "take off the hat thing" but honestly, watching it again, it was annoying. And I genuinely do not understand the support for it.

Kevin constantly butts into other people's conversations and disagreements, and it comes off as entitled. Especially considering the fact that he has a specific history of imposing on their relationship, including currently living in their home and somehow needing to be told not to play guitar at night.

And alright, I'm not a huge Toby fan in S6 and it's obvious they wanted us to accept Kate and Toby's split by making him worse. And his sugar comments were annoying. And I genuinely didn't agree with how he wanted to go about food. That's not my issue.

But making it about the hat was just just corny, in my opinion. And also didn't feel like Kevin's place to say. For two reasons:

  1. Everyone outside the immediate family knows the significance of the hat to the Pearsons. And I say that this way because the significance doesn't extend beyond that (aside from Miguel) because, understandably, the spouses did not know and love Jack and cannot be expected to center around his memory and traditions. But they participate and that's cool. But it's significant. And telling Toby to take it off would be understood as "you're not welcome" because Toby knows the significance to them (even if he, realistically, wouldn't feel the same emotional significance). And that coming from someone not in the marriage just feels like overstepping, considering that Toby was not being ab*sive or anything that would require actual intervention. Kate should have the say as the grown woman in the marriage.

  2. Again, Kevin specifically? I know, as viewers, we see Jack Pearson as the ultimate man of supreme significance but can you imagine being a non-Pearson, knowing Kevin, and hearing him be the one to say it? The immediate over-it feeling I think I would get even as Beth or something would be immediate. Because why does Kevin fix his mouth to insert his opinions during a disagreement between a married couple?

I've seen comments justify it with "Jack wouldn't want him wearing it" and yeah. Maybe. But, again, we're viewers who know Jack. In reality, there's no reason for anyone who didn't know Jack to care about what Jack would think outside of just respecting his memory if you're with one of the Pearsons.

I've also seen "Toby deserved it" and I genuinely want to stress the nuance of balancing the ideas that "someone deserved to be called out" and "not everyone is the best person to do it, nor is doing it in the moment always the best way to navigate situations". That is just reactive. Especially because we come from the perspective of knowing the private moments of Kaye/Toby's relationship. Kevin wouldn't actually know all that's been said.

I love This Is Us. Great show. And I love Jack.

But it reminds me of Friends where, rewatching it now that I'm older makes me realize that, while I will always love the show, these characters would be insufferable to know in real life. The Pearsons are insanely out of touch and treat their inner circle as deeper than others could understand (a completely unhealthy attachment that would understandably sabotage new relationships because other people actually also have significant lives and cannot be expected to just put all things Pearson on a pedestal).

I don't know. It's just my quick rant. Kevin opened his mouth way too many times across 6 seasons and, even as pre-asshole Toby, I would have had no patience at that point with him.

EDIT: Honestly, my frustration came less from Kate/Toby and more just with Kevin interjecting with that comment. Obviously health and diet are discussions both parents should be involved in (though I think Toby wasnt great at voicing them without just seeming snarky that day). But even if Toby was uncalled for with his attitude or how he framed his comments, I dont think Kevin had the right to tell him to take off the hat.

Bec & Jack, Kate & Toby, Kevin all by himself, there was so much to learn from these characters.
I won’t be forgetting this show any time soon.

Currently rewatching Sabrina the teenage witch, when a familiar face pops up. Took me a while to place him, but young Jon Huertas was definitely already a heartthrob. (He appears in season 4)

New to This Is Us... should I commit?

I'm up to ep 14 of S1 and I was enjoying it.

Then we get to Kate's weight program.

Firstly, Toby gatecrashes it, and when he doesn't get enough attention from Kate he pulls the major surgery card and then she ends up apologising. And apparently the writers think that's fair? WTH? Or are they setting up for future evidence that Toby is selfish?

THEN she gets kicked out for rejecting unwanted sexual advances from a worker, son of the owner no less and it's just accepted?

So now I'm just pissed off and not sure I want to keep going.

I like most of the characters, and it's easy watching on days I don't have the head space for anything complicated. But am I gonna be pissed off all 6 seasons? 😅

Would be hard to rewatch being someone who lost his dad 11 months ago

My father's first death anniversary is approaching this month and today all of a sudden i thought of kevin's episode where he loses his father's necklace. I guess the episode name is Number One. I watched first couple of seasons few months before he died. I am not sure if its right time to rewatch such an emotionally heavy episode while keeping in mind that i am already struggling alot in last couple of weeks surrounding his death. Maybe it will trigger some good cry.

Edit: I didn't expect to get that many comments and upvotes. Anyways i did watch Number One and had alot of good cry as being one in siblings who is struggling most to cope with his death. Even with having successful career there are mnay days where i feel so weak and helpless around his death.

Cause how are the only charecters that are loved and given so much grace are the two conveniently attractive white men. Why do you refuse to see the growth and nuance and pain of Randall, Kate and Rebecca

Rebecca and Kate

Why do none of you ever mention how much their relationship improves in the later season? And how much responsibility and accountability Kate takes on? Like yall really hate her. She is this horrible irredeemable person. She also has growth. Im trying to find posts on here that are kind towards her but I literally cannot.

Toby opens up about how sad it makes him thinking about all the things Jack will never be able to see, and says that’s why he’s been pushing himself so hard at the gym. Kate just gives him that disappointed look, tells him she booked a retreat for parents with blind children for his birthday because she thought it would be a great thing for their family, and walks away with that look 👁️🤨😒👁️ (the same look she’s had throughout the entire series whenever she feels hurt or disappointed 😂)

I’m so tired of Kate at this point

SPOILERS Started another rewatch for my boyfriend to watch the show for the first time

We finished episode 3, where it shows Miguel is now married to Rebecca, and he was floored. “I hate him.” I told him, “i dare you to say that once you’ve finished this show.”
So fun to experience again through someone else’s new lens. Incredibly tough to keep things not spoiled!

Are yall dumb?

Kate isn’t mad Toby lost weight she is mad he HID IT FROM HER. And also she apologises for it. Also he uses the gym to escape from parenting while Kate is lowkey supermom. She isn’t half as bad as you make her out to be. She has her issues like every other complex character on this show. Check your fatphobia and misogyny.

I didn't enjoy the series as much, mainly because of how heavy it can be. Plus I found some characters really annoying - Randall, Rebecca and Kate.

Did anyone else feel like this?

I just finished This Is Us for the first time — I didn’t see villains, I saw a family

First, a quick note: English isn’t my first language. I understand it perfectly, but writing long texts is still difficult for me, so I used ChatGPT to help me translate and organize my thoughts so I could express exactly what I meant. The opinions and personal experiences are completely my own.

Now, with that out of the way… 😂

I got so attached to This Is Us that I devoured the entire show in 10 days.

During those 10 days, I avoided TikTok as much as possible because I was terrified of spoilers, and I’m SO glad I did because it wouldn’t have been the same experience otherwise.

After finishing the show and crying an entire ocean of tears, I finally went back to the terrifying world of TikTok… only to find people calling Rebecca the biggest villain of the show and Kate the most unbearable character.
My first thought was: Did these people watch the same show I did? 😂

So I came looking for a This Is Us subreddit, found you guys, and wanted to share some of my thoughts about the show as a whole. Maybe later I’ll make separate posts about each of the five main Pearsons — Jack, Rebecca, Kevin, Kate and Randall — because if I start going into everything I think about each of them right now, nobody is making it to the end of this post. 😂

Also, I’m genuinely open to discussing any of this with people who completely disagree with me. I don’t expect everyone to interpret the show the same way. As long as we respect each other’s opinions, I think that’s what makes these discussions interesting.

So… I LOVED this show.

To me, This Is Us is about love, trauma, family, overcoming difficult things and, above all, growth.
Throughout all six seasons, I didn’t see villains. I saw human beings.

I saw adults make mistakes and live with the consequences. I saw people genuinely apologize and try to repair the damage they’d caused. I saw people learn to forgive without letting that hurt define their relationships forever. I saw people learn that asking for help isn’t a weakness and that hiding everything you feel doesn’t necessarily make you stronger.
And when I say I didn’t see villains, I don’t mean that everything they did was excusable. Some of these characters did very wrong things and deeply hurt the people they loved. To me, trauma can explain someone’s behavior, but it doesn’t erase their responsibility for their choices.

Some characters made more mistakes than others. Some suffered more than others. But above all, I saw an imperfect family, and somehow those imperfections were also part of what made them beautiful.

I saw a mother raising her children in the 80s and 90s, trying to do what she thought was best with the knowledge and tools she had at the time. That context helps me understand some of Rebecca’s decisions, but it doesn’t automatically make them right. She made mistakes, some of them serious ones, and part of what I loved about her character was watching her acknowledge some of them.

I saw a father who deeply loved his family while carrying his own trauma and struggling with alcoholism. Jack wasn’t perfect either. He hurt people too, but he eventually recognized that he needed help when he realized he could lose his marriage and his family.

And I saw three siblings, each carrying their own trauma and sometimes having completely different memories and experiences of the same childhood, slowly learn to listen to each other, apologize and, most importantly, show up for each other.
Maybe this show affected me so much because, for completely different reasons, I saw parts of myself in Kate, Kevin and Randall.

I related deeply to Kate when it came to her weight. That’s also why I understand some of the criticism Rebecca gets in that part of the story. The scene at the pool with the T-shirt, for example, hurt. I’ve experienced similar feelings myself, so I know how much certain words or actions can affect a child.
But I still couldn’t look at Rebecca and simply see a “bad mother.”

I saw a mother who was worried about her daughter’s weight and eating habits and didn’t always handle that concern in the right way. There were absolutely things she could and should have done differently. At the same time, we also saw Jack take a different approach, often closer to “let her eat, she’s just a kid.”
I’m a mother now, so that part of the story hits me differently. I struggle with obesity myself and I’m currently preparing for bariatric surgery. My son also has a tendency to gain weight, and I find myself trying to navigate that difficult balance between teaching healthy habits and setting limits without making him feel ashamed of his body or as though food is a punishment.

It’s easy to judge a mother from the outside. It’s much harder to be in that position asking yourself: How do I protect my child’s health without hurting his relationship with food or with his own body?

That doesn’t mean Rebecca handled everything correctly. She didn’t. It just means that, to me, those mistakes don’t erase all the times she tried to make Kate feel loved, beautiful and enough.

I related to Kevin for a completely different reason: his difficulty asking for help.
That need to solve everything yourself, pretend you’re fine and only admit you need someone when everything is already falling apart is something I understand far too well. As the oldest of three siblings, I grew up with the idea that I had to be “the strong one,” the one who could solve problems without needing help.

Then you become an adult and realize that comes with a price. Sometimes saying “I’m not okay” feels almost embarrassing because you’re afraid people will judge you or you’ll stop being the strong person everyone expects you to be.
One of my favorite parts of Kevin’s growth was watching him realize that asking for help didn’t make him weak.

And then there’s Randall.

I related to him especially when it came to family secrets. Finding out as an adult that your mother knew who your biological father was and hid that from you your entire life is an enormous thing to process. I also started discovering family secrets as an adult that still affect me today.

So I understand that need to go back and try to make sense of everything: Who knew? Why did they hide it? What would have happened if I’d known earlier? How much did it shape who I became?

But I also loved watching Randall realize that he couldn’t solve everything by himself. I’m glad that both he and I understood that seeing a therapist doesn’t mean you’re weak or incapable of handling your own life. Sometimes we need help making sense of what we’re carrying, especially if we don’t want our own trauma to affect how we show up for our children.

And maybe that’s exactly why I became so attached to this show.

I wasn’t just watching the Pearsons. Sometimes I recognized my own feelings in them. Other times I was furious with their decisions. There were characters I defended in one episode and wanted to shake in the next. 😂

And I think that’s what This Is Us did so well.
It didn’t show me a perfect family.

It showed me imperfect people who loved each other. People who sometimes hurt each other even while loving each other. People carrying trauma from their parents and trying not to pass it down to their children. People who made mistakes, learned, made more mistakes, asked for help, forgave and kept growing.

When I finished the last episode, after six seasons and an entire ocean of tears, there was really only one thing left in my head:

Yes. This is family.
