Dye was mixed with salt
Hi, I was in Jamaica at a resort where there were kids’ activities and they did tye dye. They used this dye and said they mixed it with salt to make it set. ChatGPT said that’s not standard for this dye. How can I best set it or treat my shirt? It’s 100% cotton.

Today’ two washouts
The first one is a “glitch” style dye made with dye over ice method using Pillars of Creation, Rust, and Electric Blue.
The second one is a log rolled “geode” style dye made with dye over ice method using Wasabi, Brushed Steel, Celadon, Sea Glass, Sweet Pea, and Peony.
Both are 14 hour ice melt, 10 hour cure in plastic wrap on heat mat at 135 degrees. Both shirts were presoaked in soda ash and then tied damp. Then both were left to completely dry before dying. After ice melt both shirts were hit with pariah before being wrapped in plastic wrap and placed on heat mat.

Yesterday I traded tie dye for vet care and helped a cat!
A year ago, when I started The Groovy Tie Dye Project (my nonprofit art project that supports animal rescues) my first client was a vet tech, Heather. I have 9 community cats and unfortunately our favorite little guy started to have some nasty, painful looking skin issues that my home/feed and seed store remedies couldn't fix... I contacted Heather and she immediately called me and told me to bring him and my tie dyes in and we would discuss a barter. Diego received love, pets, a 5 star vet experience and 3 shots. The cost? 2 tie dye tshirts and a hug! I couldn't be happier! Yesterday I got to use my art to make the world a better place and help a friend in need. 🩵

Blackout mandala with spine
decided to treat myself to a shirt for me. been trying to refine this particular spine style (previous post showed process) so went with that. Got it in a place now that it is predictable and repeatable. couldn’t be happier with the result. really dialing in what works and what doesn’t on both the front blackouts and backs. definitely a favorite!

Does dye/chemicals render tools useless/toxic?
I mostly have dye dedicated gear, i.e. measuring spoons, but will using my immeraion blender to make chem water or dye mix slowly and toxically kill me if I use the same blender for food?
I.e. If I use an immersion blender to make chem water, or blend in powder, does that leech into the plastic and make it not food safe anymore (even after a proper wash)?
Do I have to buy a second everything to use for dying or can I get away with a good wash?

Recently finished
First dyes in a little while. I had injured my hand and was avoiding string work till the cut was healed. I was trying to play with having a little more of the white play in the shirt also using colors that can make brown mixes. My goal was to avoid making mixed shades of brown. Hope yall like what i made. Thanks for looking

Triangle pleats?
New to the community:
I love the creativity and freedom the tie dye seems to offer.
My first few are likely going to be liquid dye projects. I've got several blanks that I'm going to begin tying soon, so I started jotting down ideas and how I plan to tie each. On my list was a DNA pattern. This got me thinking of a DNA pattern with narrow, alternating triangles, instead of parallel pleats.
Is this an established pattern? Just curious what I need to search for to understand the folding and tying, or if I'm on my own to experiment.

My first sweatshirt!
I was going for geodes, but I think I over-saturated. The sinew was super tight, but I'm pretty sure I went overboard with both ice and dye. I do like how it came out though!

Advice for tiedye-ing denim jackets?
I have used Rit All-Purpose dye to good effect on denim jackets (specifically the X-Ray Indigo Denim Jacket, which is 2 percent Spandex). Because I use blue jackets that are already colored, I get a nice gradient out of it (currently a green one using green dye and a purple one using wine-colored dye).
However, looking to get into fiber reactive dye since it's supposed to be better and more permanent. Considering trying to use Turquoise Dye (maybe from Dharma?) on an X-Ray Indigo Denim Jacket.
But any advice for this sort of thing? Down the road, I could see myself trying to manage some of the cool tiedye designs folks have, except on a denim jacket.
Advice on blogs or YouTube channels that focus on dyeing denim would also be great. Thank you!

Methods question: drying tied shirts
Hi all,
I don't have a good working space where I can fold and tie my shirts after soda ash soak, so I tie them first and then soak. I prefer to dry them before dyeing because the dye gets in better (im doing ice and irrigation). Do any of you have recommendations on how to dry these folded+soaked blanks quickly? I know this is a scenario where SA application after dye (pariah) might work better but I'm just getting started and hoping to get a few designs made before I try too many new methods. So far my shirts are getting down to damp and then they stay damp for days. Am I worrying too much about getting them dry?

Batik logo Hoodie
Never (maybe) again, XL 10oz cotton independent trading company hoodie, was supposed to be a v neck but was just too thick. Cotton was also too thick to get all the wax out, but it was a free experiment for someone's first tie dye... so ill take it as a win.
