Answered [TOMT] True crime case, late '90s, early aughts ... A crazy catfish/stalker in the first days of the 'net
I can't recall whether I read about this in a magazine or heard about it in a podcast, but it went something like this...
Back when people in the general public were just beginning to access special interest groups via bulletin boards on the World Wide Web, a woman was contacted by someone who claimed to be a long-lost relative and the two developed a friendship over time.
Then, other relatives got involved in the discussion, all online and/or email, and the situation devolved into harassment, stalking and even physical threats by this group of relatives.
Things got so bad this woman was really traumatized. She turned to her best (platonic) friend — I'm pretty sure he was a queer guy, and they'd known each other for many years. He was supportive, and I think she even stayed with him for a while.
It took law enforcement a LONG time to figure out what was happening, given the era and the technology. But they finally figured it out, and ALL these "relatives" turned out to be ... (you guessed it!) her best friend. Literally just to mess with her, and see what he could get away with. He might have gone to prison. But prior to this, LE had not encountered this sort of thing before.
I'm usually extremely good at tracking stories down online, but I've had no luck with this one. Thanks!
