I can’t really comprehend this art form but this is incredible (source link in description)

Sign painter. A very skilled sign painter. That was quite satisfying.

u/praxiq 5d ago
What's crazy is that if I saw that sign in person, I'd assume that the gold was done with some sort of stencil and the color was inkjet printed on a sheet behind the glass. Most people will have no idea how much talent went into it, and that easier methods probably wouldn't look half as good.
30
u/Sirisian 5d ago
The technique you often see is UV resin like in this video. The commercial printers can print absolutely massive signs on acrylic. (I don't think any of these work on glass). There is no gold resin, so they'd be doing the same manual gold foil process.

You can tell he's good because he takes the time to show us that he dumps the glass polish on his boots and repeatedly butter fingers half of what he's holding.

A skilled sign painter would have been able to identify an error as simple as an incorrect apostrophe.

u/DeekFTW 5d ago
As a former sign maker, this is the kind of thing someone comes in wanting but end up balking when they see the price tag. They usually just settle for a vinyl print that doesn't look nearly as good.

Can you throw out a ballpark estimate?
136
u/probablyatargaryen 5d ago
On the video artist’s site it says his work starts at £25,000 (~$33,000US)
59
u/Personal_Breakfast49 5d ago
Ouch, OK I understand the vinyl print now...
23
u/ExiledCanuck 5d ago
So does everyone else who gets the vinyl. It’s amazing work, but that price tag definitely limits who can buy it (not saying it’s not worth it, but damn, definitely out of my price range)
13
u/obviouslyanonymous5 5d ago
I'll say it, that sign ain't worth $30,000 lol
28
u/ArgumentativeBirdGuy 5d ago
Man’s got commissions out for the next eight years starting at £25k according to his website so someone must think it is. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

It's been a few years since I was in the industry. But the gold leaf hand painted would easily be over $2k and a vinyl print would probably be around $300.
9
u/unautreetranger 5d ago
How long would a sign like this last? What kind of maintenance does it need?
48
u/DeekFTW 5d ago
A vinyl print fade pretty quickly, even with a UV laminate on it. Something like what's in the video will last decades, especially if it's not kept in direct sunlight. This is how all signs used to be made. You can still find signs like this from the Wild West era saloons that are in great shape.

Hand painted signs (eg. on shop windows) were popular in my area around 2018-2020. Most of the ones still around look as fresh as the day they were painted. The same can’t be said for a lot of printed vinyl signage from the same time.

All that effort just to fuck it all up with an apostrophe that shouldn't be there 😂

u/theun4gven 5d ago
Is it? I’ve always read this as an implied “house.” I’m going to The Smith’s [house]
13
u/Solace312 5d ago
In that case it would be "the Smiths' house" as the plural possessive.

u/mc_atx 5d ago
Why shouldnt it be there? Is “pachinkos” a well-known place that doesn’t have an apostrophe? Otherwise it should definitely be there as a possessive name.
11
u/MountScottRumpot 5d ago
The full text reads “The Pachinko’s”. The Pachinko’s what? If it’s a plural of a family name, it isn’t possessive. If it is possessive, the article shouldn’t be there.
→ More replies (3)6
u/Solace312 5d ago
It would still be the plural possessive in that case so apostrophe after the "s" like Pachinkos'

u/Kealanine 5d ago
This was absolutely incredible… until that goddamn apostrophe.

I think it's appropriate in this case. I'm assuming Pechenko is a surname. So the business would be called Pechenko's Bar or Pechenko's Establishment, something like that. Just Pechenko's for short. It's not labeling multiple Pechenkos like a grocer would label oranges.
Edit: Sorry, Peckchenko. Don't want to go through and fix every iteration.
13
u/remmiz 5d ago
But it says "The Peckchenko's". If it didn't have "The" or was followed by "Bar" or something I'd agree with you.

The only upside to AI is that artisanal crafts have skyrocketed in value.
→ More replies (2)14
u/Soft_Walrus_3605 5d ago
I'd wish it were so, but do you have any evidence of this? To me AI undercuts the bottom end of the market (cheap store owners using it to make signs instead of paying for custom work) and it seems that that reduced demand at the bottom end would increase availability of a static number of artists to produce artisanal works, lowering prices overall.
→ More replies (1)5
u/ureallygonnaskthat 5d ago
It also cuts out the beginning artist that relies on the simpler stuff to hone their skills and put food on the table. Prices might drop on artisanal works in the short term but raise them further down the line as there are less artists able to get to that level of mastery.

Unfortunately, this is a dying art form. Guilding and working with glass like this is so awesome and fun to watch. Every time I see pieces like this in person it stops me in my tracks to admire the craftsmanship.

Junior Kimbrough. If you like the song you should check out this documentary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XiW3oPv1vZc.
It documents some of the Mississippi Hill Country Blues legends including Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside. Some of the best American music in my opinion.

i'm torn between the master craftsmanship and the ambiguity of the grammar+punctuation combo

u/PBJMommy83 5d ago
My only, and I mean only, issue with this is that he pluralized their last name with an apostrophe. Other than that, I want one.
5
u/vesselofwords 5d ago
I was looking for someone else who noticed. I wonder if the client asked for the apostrophe gore and he had to comply knowing it’s wrong or if he thinks that’s how you pluralize a name.
Beautiful work though.

Not an English native speaker, but does the apostrophe not indicate possession of the establishment being promoted here, like in “Mary’s diner” or “John’s café”? If that is the case, is it actually wrong?
→ More replies (2)13
u/Over-Conversation220 5d ago
You’re correct that the apostrophe is possessive. The problem here it’s that this appears to be a hallmark. “The Peckchenkos” is naming who resides/what there.
It would need something like The Peckchenkos’ House” to make it correct.

Printing and digital art makes appreciating this incredible skill kinda difficult. I recognize it.. but also if i were to see it in person without the process video.. i would almost certainly not give it much thought. That is also what AI will be doing to us all.
15
u/Improving_Myself_ 5d ago
I mean, you're not wrong, but people not thinking about how much work goes into various works existed long before AI.
The average person is already thoughtless most of the time.
2
u/Top5hottest 5d ago edited 5d ago
Yeah.. that was kinda my point. I’m an artist and quite thoughtful about it and still struggle with recognizing the amount of art people are doing out there. Everything is becoming ephemeral. Enjoy it.. then move onto the next thing.

Thankfully one of the best things about the internet from an artist's perspective is not only is their physical artwork part of their value but filming the process is its own artwork in itself. Artists can sell their paintings when people only see the finished work sure but by also turning the process into content that in itself can be valuable also. I would even argue if they make good, high quality content of their progress and build a following it's even more lucrative than selling the actual piece itself.

u/Top5hottest 5d ago

No, because it's a possesive not a plural.
4
u/-captaindiabetes- 5d ago
What's the possessive?
2
u/jivemasta 5d ago
They put in an apostrophe. Like you would if it was owned by someone. Like john owns a store, therefore it is John's store. Plural would just be an s at the end, like if you have 5 people named john, you have 5 johns.

Reddit is weird sometimes. I didn’t know which sub the algorithm was offering and kept bracing for the pain of glass to shatter into a billion sharp pieces.
Fascinating artistry. There used to be a hand painted sign store on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn near the Barkley Center. They make it look so easy. I’m too sleepless and caffeinated to imagine doing this myself.

u/orcusgrasshopperfog 5d ago edited 5d ago
Wait until you see a video how they get that textured effect on the glass.
They use a special natural glue that when it dries literally rips pieces of glass with it as it contracts. It looks and sounds insane.

For those curious this art form is known as verre eglomise (pronounced vair ay-glo-mee-zay). An art technique where paint designs and metal leaf (like gold, silver, or palladium) are applied to the reverse side of a glass panel. When viewed from the front, the glass protects the artwork while creating mirror-like finish
