"Nyuudo Sign: I cast 'FIST'!" ~ Ichirin (on behalf of Unzan)

After consoling a sobbing umbrella by promising she could still make it big in Unity horror games (we gracefully left out the 'shovelware' part), we continue our journey towards the Myouren temple. The latter is already in sight when we notice a strange pink cloud in the sky. And before we even realize it's just getting closer instead of bigger, we're already greeted by Ichirin Kumoi and Unzan.

Ichirin herself seems to be a rather spunky girl that had the guts to walk up to a foreseeing nyuudo and troll him by foreseeing him instead (1). Perhaps due to the 'tempestuous life'(2) along her new guardian that eventually turned her into a youkai herself, she is noted to have a pleasant, but also quite tenacious personality(3). And might not necessarily take her training as a Buddhist priest too seriously(4)(5).

Unzan, for his part, easily comes over as large and menacing, but officially is just a 'pig-headed old man'(6), who is shy due to being bad with words(7), and actually has a gentle side deep down there(8). This seems like a far cry from the officially man-eating nyuudo he used to be before he met Ichirin, but if she became more youkai-like, maybe ol' Unzan just became more human-like?

So, what will it be?

• Are Ichirin and Unzan a father-and-daughter like couple as claimed by ZUN(9), and his constant frown mostly springs from an old man's worry about his little girl?
• Might their years have fused Ichirin and Unzan into one entity – with Futo's and Ichirin's AoCF ending noting Unzan goes unconscious just like Ichirin when Futo takes control?
• Could Ichirin and Unzan just be attached opposites – Ichirin actually being the fierce one behind her Buddhist appearance, while Unzan is an introvert in control of a wrecking ball?
• Or is Ichirin just Unzan's hitbox are Ichirin and Unzan just evidence that ZUN's second-favorite genre after Agatha Christie novels are buddy cop movies?

Bonus Question: Can we briefly discuss how Ichirin went from looking like this, to this, and finally this? Is Gensokyo's version of Buddhist enlightenment just a fancy glow up operation?
