Question Imagine you got to show your 2016 self what trap/bass music was gonna sound like in the 2020s. What are you putting on the playlist?

G Jones and Eprom - Shellshock : just a great song that would showcase how refined the genre could be

Flume - I Can’t Tell : reassurance that Flume has the juice

MUST DIE! - CRISIS VISION : pretty much the whole album could go on

Brutalismus 3000 - Harmony : maybe some recency bias but this album is pulling from so many interesting places imo. Would be crazy to hear a decade ago

Skrillex - Quest for Fire : basically everything my 2016 self could have asked for in album

Impossible to pick one, but just about everything IMANU touches

I would say not to expect much with trap, and be open to newer genres like hyperpop, digicore, hardwave, bass house, etc.

But I would point to some albums like this:

  • slayr - Half Blood (Bloodluxe)
  • Skrillex - Quest For Fire
  • LYNY - Noise to Dance To
  • syzy - The weight of the world
  • RL Grime - PLAY
  • G Jones - Paths
  • araabMUZIK - Electronic Dream 2
  • Fabian Mazur - imellem

And Artists like: * Sublab * borne * Saka * rSUN * Sorza * Phrva * Kollaba * WINK * olswel (the Soundcloud hero)

Would also say investing in San Holo stock pays off.

Love all the rest but slayr? Ugh I absolutely despise all that weird rage rap shit that’s become so popular. Slayr is one of the more digestible of them but still not a fan - and then there’s shit like bleood which literally makes me angry when I hear it lol…

I do not care for a lot of rage, because musically it is often kind of braindead and just kids yeeting their tracks through a clipper until it distorts to Tik Tok bass boosted meme level.

Slayr on the other hand is elevating things musically. He self-produces a lot, but his other collaborators like waera and jackwya also bring back a level of production that is sorely missing in trap beats. They are taking it back to where it started, catchy melodies, cheap soundfonts, wacky synths, etc. Not to mention, one of the best albums of the decade so far in regards to structure. Every song smoothly transitions to the next. In a day and age of streaming, AI, and drip feeding, it shows a lot of promise that these kids are thinking about music to this extent. Sure it is a bit rough around the edges, but I am not expecting world class mixing and mastering from 18 year olds.

Plus, I rep FL Studio gang.

Everything you listed is mostly why I can’t stand it. Mostly trash with the occasional standout artist/release…and I’ll give you that slayr is better than most and trying to do something better. Funny that he’s also openly distancing himself from rage and that whole scene simultaneously lol…

I would call his latest stuff more hyperpop/digicore than rage, but that's personally why I like it more. Ken Carson, Yeat, Playboi Carti, etc. stuff doesn't really do much for me. I may be one of the few here that is not really excited about the overblown rage direction of artists like ISOxo, Rustie, etc. It's okay in small doses, but not a lot stands out to me.

Saving grace to me of the ISOxo stuff is he's actually bringing heavy snare roll drum programming back, and I do think a lot of new trap is missing actual trap drum programming.

I’d tell myself to enjoy the golden age of trap because nothing coming out now is like that. I like some shit now but there’s barely any straight trap shit- it’s all hybrid dubstep and other genres. I was raving big time thru the 2010s and lived the best possible time for trap shit in clubs and fests. Nothing will ever be like that again imo….

Nikita the wicked!! One of the only DJs actually reproducing what trap shit was like 10 years ago- but with his own spin on it adding the classical element. Love that dude….

I got to thinking about this while I was listening to HCD earlier, just kept wondering how confused my 2016 self would've been listening to that album. Just imagine hearing Iso's sound back then with the context of "yeah this is what one of the biggest trap releases of the year sounds like 10 years into the future" - honestly idk if I would've been excited or scared LMAO
