Once upon a time trains had smoking carriages, so the smokers could smoke and the non-smokers sat in the other carriages. I'm not a smoker any more but the health police attitudes of more recent times still gets right on my fucking tits.

First glance I knew this was European.

u/dowevenexist 20d ago
What gave it away? The eastern European looking subtitles or the fact that they have decent passengers trains?
-35
u/Typingdude3 20d ago
Quite honestly US doesn’t have many passenger trains, we have freight trains. So if I see trashy people on trains it’s probably European.

Oh yeah everyone is clamoring to move to eastern Europe for their trains

u/escientia 20d ago
The fact that it’s Eastern Europe makes it surprising that they have decent passenger trains.

I’m in my late 50’s and I well remember a time where smoking was allowed in most places including trains and airplanes. Not a big deal to me
18
u/corkoli 21d ago
do you smoke now?
-13
u/fredinNH 21d ago
I quit 26 years ago
11
u/corkoli 21d ago
why quit?
-34
u/fredinNH 21d ago
It’s gross, it smells, it makes your teeth yellow, it wrinkles your skin, and it greatly increases your risk of developing a disease that will negatively impact your quality of life or even kill you
That said, a little second hand smoke is basically harmless. If you can’t figure out why that’s the case I don’t think I can convince you.

feel free to reply or not, it's reddit, I can't force anything of you:
how many ciggy smoking people would you like to share a train ride with? yes, they are smoking whilst travelling
-5
u/fredinNH 21d ago
It would be an incredibly rare event and I would not care. Honestly I’d enjoy getting whiff of burning tobacco.
5
u/corkoli 21d ago
it was pretty cheap to buy a pack of ciggies in New Hampshire in 2000
3
u/fredinNH 21d ago
I think it was $20 for a carton when I quit
1
u/corkoli 21d ago
currently in Australia the cheapest carton near where I live is $392.50AUD ($276USD) 10 packs of 20 cigs
it's going bananas. coupled with vapes being banned here, the black market tobacco trade is loving it, unfortunate side affect is now the criminal element is having a free-for-all (tobacconists getting fire bombed, smuggling etc)

Smoking is stupid. I don’t smoke. But the dangers of smoking are MASSIVELY exaggerated. A couple of bums on a train having a cigarette hurts nobody it just offends your sensibilities. Get over it.
10
u/kennethtrr 21d ago
People with asthma can’t just suck it up and not “be offended”, they would suffocate you moron.
-1
u/fredinNH 21d ago
I have asthma. I smoked for 12 yesrs. Gen Z is just soft af, offended af, triggered af, etc etc.

u/kennethtrr 21d ago
Interesting comment seeing as it was boomers that passed and enforced all the anti smoking laws. You gen Xers are all filled with leaded gas in your brain and it’s shows.

Never head of domestic violence? She was only allowed with him. Sometimes he would beat her in the woods etc or not let her out of his sight.
-18
u/Skidmore613 21d ago
Sorry to hear about your aunt, thats horrible. But he never said he smoked, he just said he remembers the times when there was smoking allowed everywhere. I grew up where ash trays were in every car door, smoke in malls, restaurants, trains, etc. And that was late 80's to mid 90's.
11
u/benderisgreat349 21d ago
He also said the “the dangers of smoking are MASSIVELY exaggerated. A couple of bums on a train having a cigarette hurts nobody”. So no he didn’t “just said he remembers the times”, he does suck and is wildly wrong.

u/AlternativeMotor5722 21d ago
I know it is very serious to smoke in an enclosed area where other people are, but when I was young (born 1956) people smoked in restaurants, buses, planes, bars, pretty much everywhere. I am glad things have changed and I quit years ago.

u/fatjeff1980 21d ago
I look at old photos of me and friends in pubs from the 90s and early 00s and everyone's got a cig hanging out their mouth. Mad how widespread, common and accepted it was.

You know, if someone just walked up to him and punched his face, he’d probably think twice in the future.
Blowing the smoke out like he’s untouchable.

u/Devincc 21d ago
That’s so badass dude. Fuck yeah. Punching randos in the face. Hell yeah

u/Aggravating-Pattern 21d ago
I would rather be punched in the face than sit in an enclosed space with someone smoking

I've been beaten up before, I have a higher tolerance for pain than I do cigarette smoke

u/thatweirdguyted 21d ago
It is very naive to think this way. Guys like this may be dirt poor and leading trashy lives, but a lot of that is from choosing violence in situations that don't call for it. A solid chunk of their whole identity is wrapped up in that. So unless you're used to fighting, you'll get beaten and/or stabbed.
But even if you won, he won't learn. In his eyes, he is just doing what he wants and never mind all the "bullshit rules". If you beat him for it, he'll see that as an unjust infringement on his freedom and seek vengeance. You will never teach a man what he doesn't want to learn.

I feel like you're not paying attention. These guys don't fight fair, ever. So you have to be better than both of them (ie an actual trained fighter) as experienced as them, you have to account for the fact that they very likely have weapons. Other people on the train can get hurt in the skirmish, and if you bloody your knuckles kicking their asses you can still get Hep C for your trouble.
It simply isn't worth it. You're not in some fantasy action flick where the other passengers applaud you. And they won't learn a damn thing. If anything, the phones will come out after the fight starts and then it just looks like you kicking the shit out of two poor people and you'll get fired from your job when it goes viral.
13
u/PugsterThePug 21d ago
Disagree. Bums like this only understand violence.
17
u/indieplants 21d ago
yes, and they understand it more than most people - likely more than yourself. you're going to take on 3 people with very little to lose? really?
as above, they're not going to stop smoking in a train because someone punched them. they've likely had harder than that to deal with in their lives
20
u/Veryactivecolon 21d ago
Shhhhh 🤫 dont break up their "i'm a tough man fantasy" i used to treat homeless drug addicts, getting beat up is just a regular tuesday to them, they wont learn shit.

If I were on that train I would have done it. I would have taught them a huge lesson. Probably would have covered the French revolution I think.

The smoke is probably disguising the body odour, which I imagine is horrifying. I'd take my chances with the cig.
