Discussion Mountaineering MegaThread

Post image
26 Upvotes

Please use this thread for communicating and coordinating all BMC/AMC course related concerns and schedules. This thread can also be used for Mountaineering related doubts.

Mountaineering differs from trekking insofar as it requires technical training for equipments and techniques necessary for traversing high altitude environments*.*

Here is a brief overview of Mountaineering certification in India. Primarily there are four types of mountaineering courses in India:

  1. Basic Mountaineering Course (BMC)
  2. Advanced Mountaineering Course (AMC) [Needs 'A' Grade in BMC]
  3. Search And Rescue (SAR) [Needs 'A' Grade in AMC]
  4. Method of Instruction (MOI) [Needs 'A' Grade in AMC]

There are six instittues recognised by the apex body of mountaineering in India, Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF). These institutes offer the aforementioned four courses.

  1. Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) Reputed & Mountaineering Legacy
  2. Nehru Institute of Mountaineering Uttarkashi (NIM) Very Reputed
  3. Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering Pahalgam Rigorous
  4. National Institute of Mountaineering & Allied Sports (NIMAS) Reputed
  5. Dirrang  Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering Fairly New & Rigorous
  6. Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports Fairly New & Rigorous

  2. Planning & Advice: Ask for or share advice on trek selection, routes, itineraries, logistics, preparation, and trail conditions. Include relevant details such as the trek, dates, experience level, and specific questions wherever possible.
  3. Gear: Discuss trekking gear, equipment reviews, recommendations, packing lists, and gear-related questions. Include the intended trek, conditions, budget, or specific equipment where relevant.
  4. News and Information: Share important updates, trail conditions, closures, regulations, weather developments, safety information, and other relevant news. Please provide the source, location, date, and relevant context wherever possible.
  5. Discussion: For general conversations, questions, opinions, experiences, and topics related to trekking and the outdoors. Posts should contribute meaningfully to the community and encourage genuine discussion.

Trek Report Bali Pass Trek (First ever trek)

Completed the Bali Pass Trek (Oct 4–11, 2026) as my FIRST EVER TREK. Pls don’t ask me why tf I chose BALI PASS as my first trek 😩 I was clearly not in my right mind.

Did the whole thing without mule service, carrying a 10-12 kg+ backpack because apparently I love making life unnecessarily hard for myself.

The ascend? Lowkey manageable. The descend? THAT ALMOST 90° CLIFF??? BRO I WAS FIGHTING FOR MY ACTUAL LIFE. Every single step had me thinking, “Yeah this is it. I’m actually gonna die here. Who tf is even gonna miss me?” Genuinely thought I was gonna become a missing person documentary.

But yeah, WE FUCKING DID IT. Overall, an insane experience, 10/10 views, 0/10 survival instincts. Would I do it again? Ask me after the trauma wears off

Planning & Advice Kuari Pass in the second half of December - snow and crowds? ❄️

Hey everyone!
I’m planning my first-ever trek to Kuari Pass 😅 this December and would love some advice from people who’ve done it!
I read that snow is usually visible from the second half of December to mid-March. How reliable is this? Is there a good chance of seeing snow-covered trails and forests in the second half of December?
How crowded does it get around Christmas and New Year’s? Are there dates that offer a good balance of snow and relatively fewer crowds?
Also, which are the most reliable trek operators for Kuari Pass? I’ve heard of Indiahikes, but would love recommendations based on your experiences.
Since this is my first Himalayan trek, any tips for a beginner would be much appreciated!
Thanks! 🏔️

Trek Report Har Ki Dun Trek

Originally, I had planned the Gomukh-Tapovan trek, but heavy snowfall in late September damaged the trail and the trek was cancelled. Indiahikes offered Har Ki Dun as an alternative - and what felt like a disappointment turned out to be a blessing in disguise.
Our journey began with a long drive from Dehradun to the remote villages of the Har Ki Dun valley. From the traditional houses of Gangaad to the vast meadows of kalkatiyadhar, every day brought a new side of the Himalayas.

And then came Har Ki Dun - where the valley opens up and the mighty Swargarohini peaks rise dramatically in front of you. According to local beliefs, this was the route the Pandavas took on their final journey towards heaven.

The trek then led us through ancient deodar and oak forests to the beautiful meadows of Devsu Thatch before our journey back to Dharkot.
Har Ki Dun is more than a trek — it is a journey through Himalayan landscapes, ancient villages, forests and culture.
Sometimes, the mountains cancel your plans only to give you something even better.

Gomukh-Tapovan was the trek I planned.
Har Ki Dun became the trek I will remember.

Planning & Advice How to Reach Annapurna Base Camp?

Hi everyone!

I'm planning to trek to Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) in Nepal in January, and I'm travelling from Guwahati, Assam, India.

I'd appreciate advice from anyone who has done this trek, especially Indians who travelled on a budget.

My questions are:

What is the cheapest way to travel from Guwahati to Pokhara? Is train + bus via the India–Nepal border a good option?

Which border crossing should I use, and what is the procedure for entering Nepal?

What would be the total budget per person, including transportation, accommodation, food, permits, and guide costs?

Is January a good time for ABC if I want to experience lots of snow and walk through deep snow?

Is it safe and practical to do ABC in January, considering snowstorms, avalanches, and trail conditions?

Can a beginner do this trek with proper preparation, or is a guide essential?

How many days should I keep for the entire trip from Guwahati and back?

My budget is around ₹15,000–₹20,000 per person, and I have approximately 5–7 days available, although I can consider extending the trip if necessary.

Any recent experiences, recommended routes, budget breakdowns, or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Planning & Advice Kedarkantha in December - Indiahikes vs TTH vs Bikat, or a local operator?

Planning Kedarkantha for December 2026 and trying to finalise an operator.

I've been looking at Indiahikes, Trek The Himalayas, Bikat, Himalayan Dream Treks and a few smaller operators like Manchala Mushafir and Himtrek.

I'm leaning towards the Kotgaon route with Indiahikes, or the Gaichawan Gaon route with TTH. The Gaichawan route seems to open around mid-December, whereas Kotgaon has earlier dates available.

A few things I'm trying to figure out:

  • Is the Gaichawan route actually worth waiting for, or is Kotgaon just as good? Is it noticeably quieter than the regular Sankri-Juda ka Talab route?
  • How reliable are these operators when it comes to group size, guides, winter gear and campsite arrangements?
  • Is it worth paying more for Indiahikes/TTH/Bikat, or have people had good experiences with the smaller local operators?
  • For someone trekking in early/mid-December, how realistic is it to expect snow on the trail and around the summit?

Would love to hear from anyone who has done the Kedarkantha trek with any of these groups, especially recently. I’m also open to recommendations for other reliable operators or alternative routes worth checking out.

Thank you.
