Request/Discussion Trip Hop with rap parts
Hello, I am a TH newbie and don't know many artists except Sneaker Pimps, Portishead and Massive Attack.
I was just listening to "I against I" by Massive Attack and Mos Def and really like the rap parts. Are there recommendable songs and/or albums which have a similar style?
I don't mind, if the whole song/album has rap in it or if only part of it does (like "The Truth" by Handsome Boy Modelling School).
Also it does not have to be pure TH or downtempo, but can also be something that has a similar sound and mood.
Thanks to everyone who takes their time to help me! :)
EDIT: TYSM to everyone who took their time two write an answer!! :)

Archive Londinium has many songs with rap. One of the best trip hop albums ever for me

It's been a very slow burner for me...year on year it's been pushing others out to take top spot, it's absolutely stunning

I am pretty sure the original does not have a rap, but there is a remix that does.

Incorrect, it always had them on it. That IS the original version, there’s no remix.

Lupe Fiasco - Daydreamin' samples a classic trip hop record.
RJD2 is another great hip hop/trip hop producer who works with various rappers. Good example is RJD2, STS - I Excel.
More subtle trip hop with smaller moments of rap:
Pretty Lights - More Important Than Michael Jordan
Sapient - Aged Branches
Ancient Astronauts - Worldwide

Blockhead is over lapping in the in trip hop category and has some good tracked with Aesop Rock, and id recommend Aesop anyway but truthfully I don't know where things begin to fall into hip hop

Check out Five Seconds by Peeping Tom and then the rest of the album if you fuck with it, Massive Attack are on track 4. For a more traditional hip-hop sound, check out the album Cold Water Music by Aim

DJ Krush with CL Smooth - Only the Strong Survive.
IMO one of the best beats ever made

As a German European, I’d highly recommend Hooverphonic to you. You aren't tied to any specific genre right now, and I think you’d like their sound.

So much rap from the day was pure cinematic trip hop: The Chronic or even Efil4zaggin are worthy. Devin the Dude, too. “Doobie Ashtray.”
Jungle Brothers, especially Remedy, but also Forces of Nature. I already mentioned Stereo M.C.s and Latryrx elsewhere… Ice T’s OG LP, first Cypress LP… when I heard Maxinquaye, everything made sense!

Ah yeah, Cypress’ Temples Of Boom, Illusions etc., also very trip-hop-sounding given the “420” influence. Bonus: “I Love You Mary Jane,” Cypress Hill and Sonic Youth on the Judgment Night soundtrack - an impressive dual-artist concept album.
Edit: gotta add Gravediggaz (Prince Paul IIRC), and Snoop’s “Murder Was The Case”, the soundtrack version that starts with the helicopter and TV reporter. Fantastic minor key dark moody groove.

UNKLE - Guns Blazing features Kool G Rap, one of the greatest rappers ever and an all time fav for me.

There's a rapper called Nickelus F. who recorded a whole CD using Portishead songs as base. It's a bit annoying to find, but his version of Roads is an all time favorite of mine.
I have the whole CD downloaded, but you can listen to his version of Roads here: https://youtu.be/4m9SiVtnIHQ

Just reminded me of “Intuition” who made “I ruined these songs for you.” He raps over numerous tracks. One is on top of Portishead’s “Humming” and it’s a bit dark, but kinda works!

Aim 'Cold Water Music' features at least 3 tracks with guest emcees.
Eyedentity - See and Archive - Londinium albums feature songs with rappers and vocalists.
Roots Manuva guests on Cinematic Orchestra and his own work is trip hop adjacent.
Lewis Parker's album 'Masquerades and Silhouettes' is worth checking out and he guested on some other artists tracks like Alpha and Craig Armstrong.
Red Snapper album album 'Making Bones' features a few tracks with an emcee.
DJ Krush features emcees on his album 'Meiso'.
That's all I can think of off the top of my head without going and digging in my collection.

This mix is far from Trip Hop, but track 35 is I Against I by Massive Attack featuring Mos Def. I love that track so much; it straight up slaps:
https://soundcloud.com/accomplice/hot-sparkles-vol-2
The full track list is here: https://accomplicated.ca/hot-sparkles-vol-2/
A track that you would probably love is Hollywood On My Toothpaste by Télépopmusik featuring Mau. It is track 8 in this mix:
https://soundcloud.com/accomplice/juncture-music-podcast-2021-07-09
The full track list is here: https://accomplicated.ca/juncture-music-podcast/
Lots of trip hop in that mix with Boards of Canada, DJ Vadim, and Gorillaz.

Sorry, just remembering more that might be a little less-known tracks out of bigger albums.
Earthling, check the tracks “Infinite M” and “I Could Just Die.” Groove Armada’s “Vertigo” album, see “Whatever, Whenever.”
Also “Suntoucher” from Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub) which features Jeru Tha Damaja.
Tricky’s “Aftermath” is awesome.
Faithless, “Reverence.”

Aesop Rock - Labor Days (2001) - one of my all time favorite albums, not too dissimilar from triphop and 1000 words per minute lol
his newer stuff is more electronic so worth checking out as well
and a similar artist is Deca

"I against I" i wouldnt personally even call trip hop. you're looking at electronic hip hop at that point
Honey Claws - Digital Animal - song with a very similar tempo
Shabazz Palaces is a very unique group you might enjoy as well, Lese Majesty is one of my fav albums from them.
Run The Jewels, obviously is one of the leading groups of electro rap

u/Substantial_Cold2385 8d ago
Massive Attack is most definitely trip hop.
2
u/ButterflyExciting497 8d ago
that particular song has very little to do with trip hop however

I respectfully disagree...
Massive Attack is a pioneer of things 'trip hop'...this song is no expception!

As others have said, Londinium by Archive is a good option. The first Massive Attack album Blue Lines also has some great tracks with rap, along with soul and r&b

I recomend Latyrix and Lyrics Born, "AKA" or part of the Quannum / Quannum MCs collective (e.g., 8 point Agenda with The Herbaliser, and "I Changed My Mind" Stereo MCs remix are personal faves), and obviously, DJ Shadow's Endtroducing and many other albums since have hip-hop elements. More rap in later works I suppose.
2
u/Playful_Ad9949 8d ago
Yes, Stereo MC’s LP was pre-TH gold and gateway to electronic for many. The whole thing sounds great on headphones. Also Latyrx “Muzappers Remix” 12” is tops. Shadow worked with them a lot, too.

u/schill 8d ago
Dang! I didn’t think of the Stereo MC’s being that early, but their discography doesn’t lie. I heard “Connected” (92?) on the Hackers soundtrack in 95 like perhaps many others, if nothing else.
I caught a Quannum show in 2018 in SF and it was fantastic. I got to say thanks to the guys after the show and they kindly signed an album for me. I was talking to Lateef and he mentioned Shadow and I was a little embarrassed that I didn’t recall, I should have remembered his voice especially from “Mashin’ On The Motorway.”

Morcheeba has quite a few songs with some rap sections, Biz Markie appeared on several tracks across their discography.

Aim - Cold Water Music
Or their other album Hinterland are both UK classics

Clint Eastwood by Gorillaz probably warrants a mention (partially because it’s a 10/10 song) but its Trip Hop primary on RateYourMusic also has quite a lot of votes against though it has more in favour.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Faithless yet. Reverence is of the all time great albums of '90's trip hop and Maxi Jazz had a top tier flow. Maybe this sub can't get into the trancier elements in some of their work.
3
u/fensterdj 8d ago
Have never heard of Faithless being referred to as trip hop before
1
u/Wild_Halibut 8d ago
Interesting. Moody atmospheric production influenced by hip-hop and electronic music. Listed as trip hop on their wikipedia page. How would you classify them?
2
u/fensterdj 8d ago
Progressive house
1
u/Wild_Halibut 8d ago
Why not both? Postcards is as trip hop as Salva Mea is prog house. Pretty silly to exclude a large portion of their output to pigeon hole them into a particular genre.
