Struggling with roommates/housing as an exchange student. Should I move off-campus?
Hi everyone, I’m an exchange student from Japan and currently having a really tough time with my housing situation. I’d love to get some advice or hear about other people’s experiences.
I live with two other exchange students from China. They knew each other before coming here, and since they’re in a different year than me, we don't have much in common. Naturally, they mostly speak Chinese with each other. From the very beginning, even before moving in, it felt like the two of them were making plans together behind my back. When I tried sending emails to connect before arriving, it took forever to get a response. One of them didn't reply until right before we moved in, with just a quick "sorry for the late response!" message. Because of this, we couldn't even discuss basic arrangements beforehand, which was really frustrating. Looking back, maybe they just disliked the idea of living with a Japanese roommate, and I should have requested a room swap right then and there.
Since living together, I’ve felt completely isolated. We don't hang out, I've never even had a meal with one of them, and I don't have any Halloween plans either. What frustrates me even more is that I paid out of my own pocket to rent a fridge for the room. The roommate who barely communicated before moving in hasn't paid a single cent for it, yet she uses it freely every day. We can't even have necessary conversations about shared living rules or responsibilities.
To avoid conflict, I’ve been staying out of the room as much as possible so they can do their own thing (napping, gaming, job interview prep, etc.). I usually don't come back until midnight every day. Meanwhile, all my other international friends seem to get along fine with their roommates and are handling their academics well, which honestly makes me feel pretty envious.
The breaking point happened recently. One of my classes suddenly switched to online. Because study rooms were fully booked, I asked if I could stay in the room just for that class period. I was turned down because one of them had job interview prep. They’ve been practicing in the room constantly lately, making it hard for me to even be there. What angered me the most is that I always take my own interviews and club calls outside so I don't disturb anyone, but they refuse to compromise.
This class was crucial for me to record because English isn't my native language, and I have a health condition/disability that makes daily life challenging, so I really need a quiet space to record lectures to keep up. Because I had to take the class in a noisy common space, I couldn’t record it properly, which was a huge setback.
My mental health completely hit rock bottom after this, and I realized I just can't tolerate this anymore. I finally reached out to my RD to request a room change.
I’m wondering: Would moving off-campus be a better option? Do off-campus housing environments generally have people who are easier to communicate with and handle these kinds of situations better? Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.
