The majority of men in the mma community (especially those who have never trained a day in their lives) are chuds with an iq of 12, who love to bash on other people and make all kinds of assertions about masculinity when they're actually so pathetically insecure they end up whining and crying when their own perception of masculinity is challenged in any sort of way

merab's fights are entertaining
64
u/Diptothaset 6h ago
Yea his style of wrestling and the dominance I personally find entertaining.
31
u/driatic 6h ago
He's also like the energizer bunny. I know it's probably EPO bc they dont get tested by USADA anymore, but he's like nate diaz and instead of relentless punching it's relentless wrestling.
34
u/Diptothaset 6h ago
I’m personally pretty sure he’s just autistic or some shit and also has immigrant work ethic. Those things combined just make him a machine that always has to be doing something, and since it’s more efficient to do something than nothing a lot of that goes into training
→ More replies (1)10
u/driatic 6h ago
Maybe and we'll never know either way, but his pre-fight stuff is also a little suspicious. He's not just warming up he's moving like a guy that has to keep moving, he moves like he has to in order to avoid blood clots

So, you think Merab Devalishvili is basically the human version of the plot of Speed, and the sequel Speed 2: cruise control?
That’s definitely an argument someone could make
5
u/TheDream425 5h ago
It’s a thing, EPO gives a higher red blood cell count which increases cardio to superhuman levels, but it thickens your blood to the point that if you don’t move enough, you can have a heart attack.
Like, guys like Lance Armstrong would have to wake up in the middle of the night and get on the bike to avoid a stroke or heart attack

Complete domination isn’t as exciting to watch as a good back and forth. Merab has had a few one sided dominant performances, and you can’t really blame him for it. His competitive fights are extremely entertaining high level MMA… Umar, Yan 2, Cory even were awesome fights.

I agree I like most of Merabs fights but you have to understand a significant portion of the sub despised him from the Aldo, Yan & Umar fights
I don’t think a lot of the users on here fully got over that especially the Umar fans
The Aldo fight was the only one that sucked in my opinion but the rest were very high pace
14
6
u/TheRabidNarwhal 6h ago
Not even a hot take by the end of his title run, most of the people shitting on him are just casuals who want to see nothing but hands. Besides the Aldo fight most of his bouts are high pressure striking + wrestling to the max.

Prime Chuck Liddell vs prime Alex Pereira is way more competitive than people want to admit.
14

Prime Chuck was hard to beat, its a shame he went to long and took some brutal knockouts
7
u/WaveOfDream 3h ago
Fake hardcore take. Pereira would legitimately kill him.
Like no disrespect but people who say shit like this simply have no knowledge of mma. Anyone with decent knowledge and watch both of their fights can tell you there's a world of difference between their striking and athleticism. And how much MMA has evolved. Chuck don't even know the concept of calf kick.

Ilia’s wrestling is massively overrated.
They say he’s a wrestler who fell in love with his hands, but looking at his background and how much he’s used of it, it doesn’t seem like he’s as proficient at his wrestling style compared to other wrestlers.
I would put him slightly above a UFC fighter that isn’t a wrestler.
10
u/SukhdevR34 4h ago
He was saying he would submit Islam then was trying and failing takedowns vs Gaethje lol. His clinch and wrestling got a bit exposed in that fight.
5
u/ShineMost8085 2h ago
I mean he was visibly gassed and beaten to a pulp at that point, it’s not really saying much about his skill if he can’t get someone down
3
u/Glu7enFree 1h ago
Did he not considering just seeing red? Like maybe I'm built different but I'd have eaten those shots from gaethje and taken him down at will.

→ More replies (2)4
u/katilkoala101 4h ago
he does have the skill but not the commitment to actually gameplan his wrestling or to have an actual system he uses as a strategy. In turn, he'll look super good in his wrestling (being pretty confident against oliveira, the throws against zalal, sub attempts against zalal, downblocks against mitchell) but he wont actually benefit from top control and his grappling isnt a huge asset when push comes to shove.
Also jumps positions a lot. Good for catching some people off-guard and pushing pace (like the aforementioned guard pass against oliveira) but he doesnt secure control really well and can throw up some flimsy sub attempts (like against gaethje).
3
u/violin-guy 3h ago
Yeah he has pretty good skill, but grappling requires a lot of energy and focus, and at that point that would detract from ilia’s greater strengths in his hands if he tried to commit too much to grappling in a fight. I will say his defensive grappling is very in tune bc of his experience, but I don’t think his offensive grappling will be amazing at the highest levels (esp considering how small he is at LW)

UFC is putting out better cards now than ever, but we are in a changing of the guard with a lot of the big names that were popular over the last 6 to 8 years so everyone sees no name fighters and brushes it off. I'm finding new, exciting fighters to follow every weekend almost.
10
u/CheeseWeenie 7h ago
Yes! This. We are moving into a new era of fighters, soon these “no names” are going to be the biggest names for the era. Joshua Van was a “no name” for a long time, now a two time defending Flyweight champ. They’re coming, a lot of sports need time for their best athletes to develop. This new era definitely going to be awesome. I feel I’ve enjoyed all the cards, even the one people thought would flop.

He doesn’t come across as “shitty” to me, just extremely fake and not genuine. Like he is really really concerned with his image. The day he was accused by his brother for misrepresenting his childhood, he posted a weird video of him talking about how much he loves his son and saying all these great scripted things. Outside of the timing being obvious, who does that? Like who does it fool? Most people are just good parents and they don’t bring a camera crew in to show everybody. And it’s not just that, he tried his hand at being a heel first and switched to golden boy as soon as he couldn’t take people making fun of him. Even threatening lawsuits privately to Strickland. That kind of stuff just feels super odd to me and I never really feel like we see who he really is, just who he wants to be seen as.

DC is the actual GOAT
He’s someone kids can take example from. No scandals the size of Jones or Mcgregor types. Came in as an older man with a body disadvantage and still ragdolled most men.
His complete story from wrestling, to MMA, to the media now is what a GOAT is. He’s given more to the game than most and he came from small town Louisiana. GOAT is about the journey and the story, Daniel is the American Dream.

I still can’t decide if I think he’s truly overrated, but I will say this. He was pushed quickly to the Izzy fight which he was well in his way to losing even as a weight bully. And then he jumps up and gets pushed to the front of LHW which is pretty close to the worst and most thin it’s ever been. Then gets pushed straight up to HW and gets his shit rocked by Gane. I’m not saying he’s necessarily overrated, but when you look closer you see an accelerated timeline against pretty favorable matchups. That’s all I’m saying.

A lot of the classic Light Heavyweight era is incredibly low level MMA, and was super popular because the Japanese crowd love freak show fights, which to them includes extremely large men fighting. This carried over to early UFC, and had little to do with high skill level.
Jones and Cormier mopped the floor with that era of fighter because they were some of the first modern, skilled MMA fighters at that weight division.

DC wasn't clean either so doesn't matter, Jones was always the better fighter of them

Jones was always the better fighter
I would actually argue DC is the more SKILLED fighter. Jon height/range mogs the shit out of DC and literally everyone who he fights, and DC struggled to make weight at LHW, Jon refused to fight him at HW, and DC came into the UFC already quite old, fat, and past his physical prime.
Jones is literally terrified of fighting fighters who are comparable to him in height and size and some of his hardest fights were against opps comparable in this category (Reyes, who many think he lost too, and he struggled with Gustaffson as well).
DC has no real physical advantages over most of his opps. He's really strong, but so is every guy at HW. He hits pretty damn hard, but so does every guy at HW and they have longer arms than him.
He literally only wins because he's the "better fighter."

Women’s MMA is no different than men’s. An average women’s fight is almost identical to an average men’s fight and the bangers are great. The boring fights get a disproportionate level of negative attention and criticism because by and large the MMA community skews toward sexist attitudes.
7
8
u/Maxiuss456 4h ago
Only in Reddit could people believe this lol The highs and lows are pretty similar but in average women's fights are a lot less active and the lack of power in their punches takes a huge amount of tension away from the fights
10
u/Extreme_Today_984 4h ago
Women don't have the same atheticism as men, that's not conjecture, that's a fact. That being said, people should be able to enjoy a competition, which has lesser physical ability. Similar to somebody watching a HS basketball game, and enjoying it because they like watching two teams compete against each other.
WMMA is no different than the WNBA in this regard. You can watch both, and appreciate it for what it is.
That being said, if somebody DOESN'T like watching WMMA because it's not at the same speed, then fine. I don't think they deserve to be called sexist or a misogynist. Some people have limited time to watch sports, and they don't have the desire to watch a lesser version of men's MMA.
Finally, I will say this. WMMA has come a LONG way. They've been progressively getting better over the past few years. I think people should give them a little more of a chance.

Absolutely true, they put on bangers all the time, but because the UFC mostly puts their fights on the prelims a lot of people dont see them, and then their title fights are boring because the top level competitors are too good to be stupid enough to get finished, just like a lot of men's title fights

Herb Dean is still one of the best refs we have. He's right that the majority of Gane's strikes on Pereira don't meet the UFC's definition for illegal strikes to the back of the head, and the ones that did happened while he couldn't see them.
He was already repositioning himself for a better view, he's not an omnipotent god, he can still only make calls based on what he actually sees with his two eyes.
6
u/Spiritual_Spite3742 4h ago
Keith Peterson is the best ref. He’s always on his toes waiting for something to happen, meanwhile Herb is always sitting back on his heels dozing off. Before all that shit with Pereira even happened, he was already coined with the name Herb “If He dies he dies” Dean. A ref being popular let alone getting that nickname isn’t a good sign

Nah, he let Chandler hit Oliveira in the back of the head 10+ times without even a warning, I think he is generally pretty lax about fouls

apparently, this is a hot take amongst the new crowd of MMA fans.
But there should be an MMA organization, preferably the UFC, that prioritizes skill above anything else.
I understand it’s sports entertainment. But keeping guys like Tai Tuivasa and Michael Chandler while cutting guys like MVP and then claiming the UFC is looking for the best, just doesn’t make sense.
