Question Advice on getting a single room for spring semester at UIowa?

I'm a freshman at the University of Iowa currently living in a dorm, and I'm hoping to get a single room for the Spring 2027 semester.

There have been a few things that have made me uncomfortable with my roommate (different expectations around guests, intimacy, drinking, privacy, belongings, etc.), so I'd rather try to get a single if possible.

I already emailed University Housing asking about the possibility of getting a single for spring, but I'm wondering what else I should be doing.

For anyone who's gone through the UIowa housing process:

  • How difficult is it to get a single for spring semester?
  • Are there usually singles that open up after fall semester?
  • Is the spring room-change waitlist the main way to get one?
  • Is there anything I should do before the waitlist opens to improve my chances?
  • Does it help to be flexible about which residence hall the single is in?
  • Are there particular residence halls where singles are easier to get?

I'm willing to move to a different residence hall if that's what it takes. I'd just really like to have a single next semester.

Any advice from people who have actually gone through the process would be appreciated!

Question How are classes during severe weather?

I’m from VA and went to the University of VA. In VA ANY severe weather (storm, snow, etc) classes were either cancelled or moved to virtual. How is that in Iowa? I’m starting there this year and am curious as to how are classes during severe weather?

Question What are sororities like?

I’m not sold on the idea of joining one, but my mom LOVED being in hers (she was in Alpha Chi Omega and wants me to do that) but I’m really not the type. Like, if I had enough time and energy to do makeup every day I’d probably be emo. I don’t have fun cheery sorority vibes 😭 All I ever see online is the “Bama Rush” type of girl, which I know I wouldn’t want to be around. Is that what it’s actually like? If I did Alpha Chi Omega like my mom wants, would I be surrounded by stereotypical sorority girls? I know there’s Gamma Rho Lambda but I’m not sure if I’d be chill there either because I’m not technically queer lol. Are there any sororities which are similar to Gamma Rho Lambda but without the LGBTQIA+ emphasis?

Question Lack of Feedback on Papers?

As a student who transferred from community college, I'm a bit shocked by how little feedback I get on papers/written assignments. In the past I've done well in terms of the grades I receive, and there is not a huge change in that now, but when I get docked points there is often no feedback on what I did wrong or I lose points based on reasoning that was not made clear in the grading rubric. Maybe its just the classes I'm in this semester. But for one course specifically, the expectations are borderline incomprehensible from the Professor.

For example, after asking something like "Would this framework for the upcoming paper be too complex based on how you mentioned in class that we shouldn't go beyond two steps in analyzing the theories?" they took a moment to really look at my drafted framework and responded, "is this what you would want to turn in?" ... (it's a drafted framework, the next submission is the paper). Then they deflected every follow-up question I had, leaving our group super confused. This was on a class day where we were supposed to work on our papers.

Has anyone else had similar experiences?

Question Have there been changes made to Foundations of Bio since previous semesters?

I took Foundations of Bio a couple semesters ago and it totally blew, but I've been hearing from people who are taking the course or know people who are taking the course right now that they were required to alter the course a bit because they were failing too many students. I remember feeling like Osadchuk and the other professor almost designed the course to make people fail out. Could just be people talking shit as always, but it would be funny if it were true.

Question First time Hawkeye Tailgating

Hi! First time IOWA Hawkeye tailgating experience looking for some help from the experts. We bought a spot in Lot 3 (the library I believe). It says you can park 6 hours before the 3:15 game. Realistically--do people get there at 9a? Will there be spots left if we get there around noon? Wasn't sure if anyone had any experience with them overselling the lots.

Going to bring lots of water and cool snacks since it looks to be a hot one this weekend. Any other suggestions--I'll take them!! Thanks in advance! GO Hawks!
