Bets bouldering gyms in London ?

• Upvotes

Rock climbing has always seemed fun to me, but I’ve been scared to try it because I have absolutely no upper body strength and a slight fear of heights. However, I’ve now been a couple of times, and it’s brought me so much joy! I really want to get better at it.

I live in Hampstead, and there aren’t any climbing gyms in my area, so I’d need to commute. I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the options and would love to find a beginner-friendly gym with (not full of students, as I’m in my 30s, lol)

Any recommendations would be much appreciated! Thanks :)

Men’s indoor climbing pants/leggings

I’m looking for a decent pair of climbing pants or leggings for exclusively indoor climbing. Ideally pretty stretchy, soft and well made. Sounds like a simple request, but I don’t like the heavy cotton types, nor the, errr, revealing leggings! Yoga pants perhaps? Any suggestions for specific products welcomed

scented rock climbing chalk

Hello, I've made some scented rock climbing chalk. I am selling it on Amazon UK only for now. I thought I would make a post to get it out there, also to get some feedback and answer any questions if anyone is interested in buying it. I've only got 10 bags, and I am looking to make bigger bags. The ones I have now are 100 grams, which is not much also looking to expand into scented if it takes off. Any feedback, please leave below thank you.

I got fed up of ukclimbing stats

Got fed up of navigating the ukclimbing stats page and wanted some better ways of viewing the data in my logbook. So I made a website that you can import in UKC logbooks and get all kinds of nice stats out of it. Posting here for all the other climbing data nerds.

Lost clothing in Cuttings, Portland

Found some clothing left near Subather’s Slab (Cuttings, Portland) today that looked like it had been there for a week at most. We took them back with us as no one was around all day (we’d been there since early morning) and wanted to protect them from the elements. Happy to post them back to their rightful owner, just DM me the clothing item, brand, and size to clarify.

Christmas gift ideas

Hi guys! Little on the random side, and really sorry if this is not the place to ask, but I'm looking to get some ideas for climbing related gear I could get for my son and husband who are both into rock climbing.

I am absolutely not a climber in anyway shape or form (I suffer with vertigo, so I stick with powerlifting).

My son is 5 (and a half, as he would tell you) and has been climbing since he was 2. He already has his own shoes and chalk bag.

My husband is older than that obviously (physically if not mentally). He already has a harness, shoes, chalk bag and other bits of standard kit (like belay device and stuff like that).

I was looking at the Boulder Block game thing as a silly present, but would love some serious suggestions of things I could get.

Budget would be ~£100 each, but would be willing to break the bank a little if it was something worthwhile getting.

TIA for helping out a confused but enthusiastic mum/wife 😁

I got stuck at V5 and built an app to see if I was actually improving — looking for testers

WHY?

I've been stuck around V5/6C for a while. What got to me wasn't only failing harder climbs — it was having no idea whether I was actually improving or just repeating the same session every week.

I run as well, and I like that Garmin Coach makes progress easy to see even when I'm not setting a PB. I wanted that for bouldering. Not a coach or a training plan — just a quick way to log what I did and see whether anything was changing.

What?

So I've been building ClimbIQ. You start a session and log each problem when you're done with it: grade, total attempts, and sent or not sent. That's it. It supports V and Font grades, and your gym doesn't need to set anything up. I hate using my phone while climbing, and I tried as hard as I could to make the logging part super simple!

There's no feed, leaderboard, or route database. Honestly, I don't want another social climbing app. I just want logging to take a few seconds and the information afterward to be useful.

It's still early, and I'm looking for UK indoor boulderers on iPhone or Android who will try it out. I want honest feedback about anything slow, confusing, broken, or just pointless. If you wouldn't keep using it, I want to know why.

If you complete the three sessions and send me that feedback, I'll give you a year of ClimbIQ Pro for free.

Apply here: https://www.climbiq.app/beta?source=reddit

I'm building it myself, and I'm happy to answer questions here.

Somerset climbing buddy ?

Hey guys, I recently moved to Somerset and have been getting back in to my climbing after bit of a break. My old climbing partner doesn’t get out anymore so I’m looking to see if there is any one local that’s in to a bit of trad and some of the more technical scrambles ? Don’t mind a bit of sport but My days of really hard climbing are behind me just like to get out and enjoy it now and maybe have a coupe of days in the mountains ? Also would love to get a couple of winter trips in too.

Has anyone got any crag photos they'll willingly donate for mapping purposes?

I'm mapping out crags in the UK onto OpenStreetMap.

Route names, grades etc aren't copyrighted but sadly photos and topos are. This means that I have to obtain them myself somehow.

I've gone out and pictured a few crags already but if there are any kind souls out there that have clear pictures of UK crags without any people etc (bouldering mats are fine) in them, that would be great!

I will make sure to attribute you in the OSM metadata.

For reference, here is one I have done myself: https://openclimbing.org/relation/21317287#8.51/53.1687/-3.5038

It would be great to get the whole of the UK on par with that <3

Lead Climbing

Hello, I'm hoping to do an intro to lead climbing course at the Glasgow Climbing Center with the aim of getting into outdoor sports climbing next year. If anyone was interested in pairing up for the course let me know 2x 1hr 45min lessons @£85pp. I could get through to Ratho if they did similar.

OpenClimbing - Topos and locations based on OpenStreetMap data

Hey everyone,

A few weeks ago I discovered OpenClimbing through various OpenStreetMap (OSM) forums and thought I'd do my bit and try and get it "out there" a bit more.

It's basically a crag locator. Similar to UKC except the data is open and free to download forever. It already has large traction in Europe as you can see here: https://openclimbing.org/#5.28/48.9946/17.8685

But sadly it's gone unadopted in the UK (it's still quite new). I've added a few crags in the UK mostly around where I live but as with anything OpenStreetMap related, community contribution is where it thrives.

You can see some UK contributions here to see what it's capable of: https://openclimbing.org/relation/21317287#9.34/53.2642/-2.7865

Features

  • Export routes as PDFs, no internet connection? No problem
  • View interactive topos
  • Logbooks
  • Filter on grade/rocktype etc...
  • Mobile friendly out of the box

How is this different to UKC?

I saw someone ask this on another post so thought I'd attempt to answer.

The function of it is the same (although improved imo) but the data is open and free. Meaning you can build your own apps/websites/books/whatever off of it and you don't need to ask permission, just attribute the person and that's it.

If you don't like how OpenClimbing works, you could make your own version since the data actually resides in OpenStreetMap.

UKC's crags and all the routes are proprietary. There's no way to download the dataset. The only people they give access to their dataset is Rockfax and I have mixed feelings about that app as do many others based on its 2.9 star review.

I love UKC and the data on there but I don't agree with holding information close to your chest. If everyone did that there would be no Wikipedia, no OpenStreetMap and therefore, no interesting and original ideas like OpenClimbing.

There's some articles here if you really want to dig in, if you like OSM and what it does/stands-for then you'll enjoy this.

https://medium.com/@jvaclavik/story-behind-openclimbing-org-ab448939c6ac

P.s.

I'm not affiliated with them in anyway, just a guy that likes to map and climb and believes in information being free
