News Polish PM Tusk: Everyone was aware that, with this shift in President Trump's position on Ukraine and Russia, Europe should support Ukraine even more. Many countries realize that if Ukraine falls, we will all have very, very serious problems. 17 Oct 2026
There has never been such a unified position among practically all EU countries. Even those who are less pro-Ukrainian,who sometimes show signs of weakness toward Putin, had no doubts that the next several months will be crucial, perhaps not only for the history and future of Ukraine, but for the whole of Europe. Everyone expects an increase in Russian escalation and provocations on a larger scale.

I can’t wait till we’re no longer reliant on any American product or service. Our biggest mistake.

Last time Europe wanted to rearm and distance itself from the US the US threatened violence, and now Americans act smug about it and like Europe should've known better... Similar as with Greenland where the US ALWAYS had the option to build more bases and had more bases in the past but dismantled them.
And then starts freaking out over how they need Greenland because it's so undefended etc...The truth is tho that in practice the US has needed its allies more than the other way around, the US is the country getting into wars abroad all of the time and needs its allies to operate its military abroad.
I don't think Russia or anyone else going to war with Europe was ever a realistic scenario, the US has just made it less likely but it was always extremely unlikely.
And as we've seen I think it's safe to say that Europe would've handled it either way...If the US loses the support of its allies tho it becomes practically impossible to operate the US military globally and the US economy will suffer.
The US also depends on cooperation like everyone else to develop and produce its military equipment, they still use foreign parts and resources ( including from its enemies like China ) and has a lot of European scientists and engineers who co-develop equipment. It always gets framed as Europe benefiting the most but I don't really think it's true, the US has benefited the most by far and Europe has essentially stayed passive in return but not really gained much in practice.

to be fair from having spoken to military people.. they are highly aware of the situation there in and nearly every conversation when it comes to anything tech is "can we do it ourselves/european."

I mean... It worked until it stopped to work. Strong addiction needs a detoxification procedure. But it is not only USA. We have a strong addiction with China as well. We used to call it relationship, now we call it addiction. Something positive turned into something toxic. It is not easy - it is painful. Economy hurts.
Almost like someone designed an economic shock to make populations resist sending money abroad to help other nations....

The Ukraine-Poland border is and has been one gigantic corridor that is keeping Ukraine supplied and allowing for "life to continue" with Europe as much as that is possible. The situation is historic.
The future is bright for Poland because of these choices. A favorite term of mine: "fellow feeling." Tremendous human energy is concentrated in fellow feeling.
All that Russia has fellow feeling for is being powerless in their own country. Fuck them.

But still, it says a lot about how tough the Ukrainian troops are: Even with support from China, North Korea, Belarus and the US, Ruzzia still can’t conquer the country.

It’s amazing their resilience but I feel for them this winter. It’s going to be tough in Ukraine without gas or electricity
5
u/MySocksSuck 7h ago
Definitely. We (Europeans) need to up our support and release the confiscated Ruzzian funds, so Ukraine can buy weapons and supplies.

Because Ukraine is getting free money and weapons from a bunch of countries.

There isn't a shift in krasnov's position. He has always been a ruzZian asset.

Come on Europe!
We need you to hold the line for 2.5 years.
That's how long it'll take to flush this turd.

u/Confident-Stand5453 7h ago
We're trying. And its embarassing that with 440 million people and 11 times the GDP of Russia, we are struggling to do it. We really shouldnt need the US, although it would ofcourse be best if this was something all of NATO did together, with both europe and the US contributing heavily.

Ok, I am not sure that Trump’s shift matters much. Russia doesn’t have diesel to export to the US. If they had, then it would be exported to some country anyway. Trump had to walk back decisions on starlink and intelligence sharing.
It will be harder for Trump to do things that are good for Putin when a new congress is seated in January. Trump didn’t want to introduce new sanctions on Russia during his first term (before the war), but he had to, because congress sent him veto proof bills. Most R senators voted for sanctions back then and I think it will be the same today.

Starlink/shield is still getting throttled and the US has been blocking weapons deliveries that other countries have already purchased.

u/Old-Suspect4129 9h ago
That's just tRUmp's pretense. He knows he won't be able to continue slow balling his support for putalini once the repugnicans lose control of the government after Novembers elections. IMHO

u/Exciting-Emu-3324 3h ago
It's why Putin is cashing out everything he can before the midterms, he doesn't expect Trump to last much longer. Just dangling Lukoil like car keys.

It doesn't in a practical sense, it's the symbolism behind it that's the worst.
And that only makes it even more baffling and moronic, Trump is completely destroying what little reputation the US has left for nothing.6
u/amitym 8h ago
It's not just symbolism, Trump-Putin dgaf about symbolism. It's a pretext for future American hard commitment to Russia against Ukraine. First financing (the stage we're at now), then arms, then forces.
Whether or not this effort succeeds is up to the American people to decide. But Trump-Putin are going to try. That writing was on the wall after the 2024 US election.

u/Confident-Stand5453 7h ago
I dont think very many people ever doubted Polands commitment to supporting Ukraine. But I would sure like to see similar strong words from the leaders of those EU countries that are more passive in this regard. Where is Spain, Portugal and Italy on this? They are quite large countries and if they supported Ukraine to the same degree as Poland, it would make quite an impact.

Ideally European nations would deploy to Ukraine and kick Russia out.
I mean a direct shooting war.
Kick Russia out and force them to hand over Putin and other war criminals to Hague in exchange for resuming trade. It would be for the best for Europe, Ukraine and Russia.
Eventually that will happen anyways. Just the longer we wait more people will die due to Russian aggression.

The main question is would YOU drop everything right now and go risk your life in a trench? (Why haven't you already?) If not it's not fair to agitate for other to do so. There's are still many more way in which Europe could help Ukraine, instead of sending their citizens to fight.

Jesus christ.. It's not about bots or anytthing, you see how insane these people are in Russia, they are freaking brain washed to the point that anything is possible... Stop denying the possibility of nukes, it's there. Yes, I know what you gonna say.. "So you gonna let the bully us, just because he has nukes and threaten us with them if we make a move?" No, but there are just other things that can be done, to prevent this scenario which will be the last thing humanity wants...
Europe would have already done what the main comment says, but they haven't, why? Because it's stupid and unrational thinking.. It's soooooo easy to send NATO troops there and escalate all this in a blink of an eye to no return..
Best thing is to hold as long as it's possible until an opportunity opens.. What that opportunity is? I have no fucking clue.... I hope Ukrainians endure this pain and I'm thankful for everything they are doing from holding these fcking brainless and spineless creatures in this huge land they have..

u/Local-Put8 5h ago
Brother you think if Europe launches a full attack on Russia that they aren’t gonna use nukes? Putins fucking 75 years old or something he doesn’t care what happens anymore, I’m not Russian I’m Polish

He's absolutely right.
The problem is: how are we going to fix this?
There's ongoing work to counter the ballistic missile threat, and they're now licensed to produce their own ASTERs, but those are not going to be the end-all, be-all. There were some results planned next summer, but right now there's very little.
And now, on top of that, there's this Starshield clusterfcuk. We simply cannot launch an alternative to that sometime next month or so.
More help is needed, and warranted, obviously. But more help is still not going to fix the gap in Patriot protection or the Starlink problem.
Even with more European help, this is not looking good.

u/AdventurousLet548 5h ago
Maybe send some drones and missiles from EU countries since Trump/Musk have restricted Starlink access.

You guys always have had a serious problem, its taken Europe too long to get going on truly defending itself and Ukraine.

u/unknow_feature 9h ago
Support what exactly? Slow elimination of Ukrainians? Nobody ever helped enough to defeat Russia.
3
u/lesbophobia_hammer 4h ago
I mean take Poland out of the picture and you have total collapse of Ukraine to Russia a long time ago

u/AsdaFan1 8h ago
The current US government should be treated like you're growing mushrooms. You feed them shit and keep them in the dark all while Europe builds more independence.
