FAQ and useful information

Official sub Discord server: https://discord.gg/7gVAcPA3Me

==I - General==

  1. What is Umineko: When They Cry?

It is a Japanese murder mystery dōjin soft visual novel series produced by 07th Expansion that comprises the third and fourth entries of the When They Cry franchise.

  1. What is the When They Cry franchise?

When They Cry - Higurashi Question Arcs

When They Cry 2 - Higurashi Kai (Answer Arcs)

When They Cry 2+ - Higurashi Rei/Hou

When They Cry 3 - Umineko Question Arcs

When They Cry 4 - Umineko Chiru (Answer Arcs)

When They Cry 4+ - Umineko Tsubasa/Hane/Saku

When They Cry 5 - Ciconia

The third and fourth installments are considered the main story of Uminkeo under most contexts.

  1. Do I need knowledge from other WTC titles to understand Umineko, and vice versa?

Ryukishi sees his characters as actors and compared using similar characters in different works as being similar to Harrison Ford playing both Han Solo and Indiana Jones, in that the person behind the role is the same, but the character they are playing in each movie, or in this case game, is very different. He would then go on to mention that Higurashi and Umineko take place in worlds that are very distant from each other, yet still connected.

However, newer series in the franchise often contain unavoidable spoilers to older ones. Therefore, we strongly recommend everyone to read main WTC titles, and 07th Expansion titles in general for that matter, in the order they are released.

==II - Visual Novels==
The main Umineko story originates as visual novels. The entirety of it has been officially localized in English along with the spin-off fighting game Golden Fantasia (see the next question for details).

  1. Where can I acquire the games?

Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/5465/Umineko_When_They_Cry_Complete_Collection/

Hardcopies: https://www.mangagamer.com/product_list.php?page=1&goods_type=3&company=07th+Expansion

  1. How do I reach the next Episode? Do I need to read the Tea Party and ??? too?

Each part of the story is supposed to be read upon unlocked, including Tea Party and ???. They are part of the story in that order.

  1. What should I do if there are things I still don't understand after completing the story?

Certain portions of the manga adaptation can help. See the next section for details.

  1. Are there visual novels outside the main story?

Tsubasa, Hane, and Saku are compilations of additional short stories in the format of VN. An official English localization is supposedly being worked on but has not been released. Tsubasa and Hane have a manga series of partial adaption; see the next section for details.

  1. What is Golden Fantasia?

It is fighting game spin-off of the Umineko. While it is technically non-canon, some of its contents can add insights to the main story.

==III - Manga==
The main Umineko story has a manga series as a complete adaptation of the visual novels with changes. The entirety of it has been officially localized in English.

  1. Where can I acquire the manga volumes?

https://yenpress.com/series/umineko-when-they-cry

  1. What are the adaptational differences?

The story is mostly the same. However, unlike the visual novel counterparts, the last two Episodes in the manga series provide explicit solutions to the mysteries in the first six. People who want more clarity after completing the visual novels are recommended to go through them.

  1. Are there manga releases outside the main story?

None of the related manga outside of the main story have official English localization. Only the ones with fan translations are listed for the purpose of this section. Two manga series are officially categorized as "side stories".

* Tsubasa: https://07th-expansion.fandom.com/wiki/Umineko_no_Naku_Koro_ni_Tsubasa#Adaptations

This is a partial adaptation of the VN Tsubasa and Hane. There is an incomplete and discontinued fan translation project.

* Forgery of the Purple Logic: https://07th-expansion.fandom.com/wiki/Umineko_no_Naku_Koro_ni_Murasaki:_Forgery_of_the_Purple_Logic

This is an original story similar to a certain interactive segment of the Ep8 VN. There is a complete fan translation available.

There is another related manga series that's loosely connected to the Umineko series by a short story (https://07th-expansion.fandom.com/wiki/The_First_and_the_Last_Gift).

Hotarubi no Tomoru Koro ni (When the Fireflies Glow): https://07th-expansion.fandom.com/wiki/Hotarubi_no_Tomoru_Koro_ni

There is a complete fan translation available.

==IV - Others==

  1. Is there an anime series of Umineko?

There is an anime series of 26 episodes that cover the Question Arcs of Umineko with official English subbing available. As it does not cover the complete story and certain design choices are widely considered questionable, people who have not completed the entire main story via other mediums are NOT recommenced to watch it.

  1. Is there a light novel series of Umineko?

There is a complete light novel adaptation of the Umineko main story. However, there is no official English localization or known fan translation efforts. https://07th-expansion.fandom.com/wiki/Umineko_no_Naku_Koro_ni_(novel))

  1. I think I have been spoiled. What should I do?

First, we would avoid confirming or denying plot points as that would make it worse if it ends up being a spoiler. Second, given the depth and breadth of the story, we hope you enjoy the ride regardless. Finally, we would add, that Umineko is a mystery story, which invites you to make theories on what happened; even with spoilers, it's not easy to solve all of those mysteries, as one can always ask how this explains everything.

English translation patch for Umineko Portable 1 has been released

Post image
179 Upvotes

I’ve released English translation patch for the Umineko Portable 1 PSP game.

Umineko Portable is a PSP port of the VN. There are two games, the first one contains episodes 1 and 2, and the second one contains episodes 3 and 4. The first game is now fully playable in English on both PSP and PS Vita and I plan to release patch for the second game later this year. This patch uses the Umineko Project translations.

Windows/macOS/Linux port for the Switch 07th Expansion games

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've been working for a while on continuing a Rust Windows/macOS/Linux implementation of the ENTERGRAM "shin" engine, aka the engine powering the console versions of the 07th Expansion games (and other games, see here: https://vndb.org/r?f=fwshin- ). This project was started/worked on for years by DCNick3, https://github.com/DCNick3/shin who also is responsible for most research available on the internet on this engine and its file formats, so huge thanks to them as none of this would exist without them!

At this point the engine can run all the console exclusive/with console exclusive content from 07th Expansion:

- Umineko no Naku Koro ni Saku ~Nekobako to Musou no Koukyoukyoku~ (Switch release both 1.0 and 1.03)

- Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Hō (Switch release, version 2.0 including the Origin DLC)

- Gensou Rougoku no Kaleidoscope (also known as Gerokasu, Switch release)

- Gensou Rougoku no Kaleidoscope 2 (also known as Gerokasu 2, Switch release)

I'm not personally planning to support other games, but given the code supports engine iterations from 2018 to 2025 it should be easy to do for games in that time period.

From all my *very nitpicky* testing Umineko and Higurashi run flawlessly including all the menus and anything else that might require special attention in the engine, everything is supported. The Gerokasu games *should* also work perfectly but I'm less confident since I've not read them yet, will playtest soon.

The engine also supports loading translations and mods, I've personally tested the English fan translation for Higurashi and Umineko; and it supports streaming any relevant text through a websocket for Japanese learners.

You need files extracted from the Switch game, the readme explains how to do it.

As a note: this was accomplished by reverse engineering and reimplementing the behavior of the original engine through a LLM. My work process has been letting the LLM reverse the assembly code from the Switch executables and reimplement it, and manually testing everything against the games running on my actual console until it all worked and looked correctly (I know Japanese which also helped a lot).

Download/readme: https://github.com/AuroraWright/shin

Feel free to report any issues or just behavior differences compared to the originals on the repo.

Discussion How gory is Umineko?

Hello. I'm new to Umineko, and, even though I've been interested in it for quite a while now, the thing that always stops me from getting into Umineko is gore.

Now, while I definitely can tolerate a certain amount of gore, I'm not that big of a fan of it, and I prefer to be prepared and know what to expect. So, how bad actually is it? Is it worse than, for example, the IT movies, the Supernatural TV show, or the Lord of the Mysteries Donghua? If so, by how much? Mainly asking about the anime, since I've heard the VN is tamer.

Thanks in advance, and sorry if it's a dumb question.

Umineko haul from recent trip to Japan

Post image
97 Upvotes

It’s been a couple weeks since I’ve returned from Japan so I hadn’t gotten a chance to get all my Umi-stuff in one spot.

I had a chance to go see Episode 7 BUD Umi Stage. I don’t have the words. It was incredible to see it. I didn’t see the second half of Episode 7 (they split it into two parts) I don’t think I would have been able to handle it. I’d feel like Ange watching the “truth” inside the Cat Box.

We stayed in Ikebukuro, so I had to go to the eeo pop-up shop in the Parco. I couldn’t find it at first. I went to the floor that the website said and it was all fashion. It took us a few to realize that there’s also P’Parco about a block away.

Hit up a couple Book Offs and Surugaya to scour for manga and CDs. The gaaps are closing in my Umineko manga collection.

My final day in Tokyo, we were traveling through Shinjuku station and I wasn’t looking for it, but I found the eeo pop up that had just opened that day! I thought I was marked safe from buying more Umi-merch.

Forgery Locked Room Puzzle! (pt.8)

Hello again r/umineko! Let's play another logic game!

Rules:

  • I am the Game Master. My goal is to convince humans that "magic" is real through this logic game.
  • As the GM, I know the solution to my game. Thus, I can use red truths just like Beatrice!
  • Those of you interested can be the Human. Your goal is to deny my "magic" using blue truths. You can provide your blue truths in the comments section of this post.
  • Humans can also ask me for repetition requests. But take note that I can decline a request at my discretion.
  • However, I am required to respond to a blue truth, as long as it is valid.
  • If I fail to counter a blue truth, the game ends and the humans win!

Scenario (all are red truths):

  • There are only 5 characters in this game: Natsuhi, Erika, Eva, Kyrie, and Rosa.
  • The game takes place inside a guesthouse. The guesthouse has exactly 5 guestrooms, one for each person.
  • Natsuhi hands out a room key to the other 4 guests. Therefore, each guest has the key to their room.
  • Because Natsuhi is the host, she has a master key to every guestroom.
  • After dinner, everyone went to their rooms.
  • Erika knows Natsuhi has the master key. Since Erika's room was next to Natsuhi's, Erika monitored Natsuhi by pressing her ear against the wall adjacent to Natsuhi's room. She kept this up all night without sleeping.
  • The next morning, Eva was heard screaming in the hallway.
  • Natsuhi, Erika, and Kyrie quickly rushed to the hallway and saw a horrified Eva staring at a door.
  • The door was painted with an eerie magic circle from some red liquid.
  • They tried to open the door but it was locked. So Natsuhi used her master key to unlock the room.
  • When they went inside, they found Rosa dead, a stake pierced her forehead.
  • Rosa's key was later found inside her pocket.
  • Erika, who spent all night listening to Natsuhi's room, did not hear Natsuhi's door open after Natsuhi went inside.

So, how did Rosa die?

Discussion We tried to solve all Umineko after finishing EP4: This is our theory Spoiler

After finishing Alliance of the Golden Witch, a friend and I got stubborn and decided to systematically analyze all of the mysteries of Umineko, trying to solve as much as we could using only the first four episodes.

We built a website to host our work, catalogued all the character profiles, red truths, tips, wrote a complete question arc theory which we’re very satisfied with!

Our theory doesn’t just try to give answers to the mysteries, but it also tries to explain what is Umineko, how the hierarchy of its world works, and get as far as it can using the clues the story gives us.

You can read it here:

https://endless-speculation.online/

The rest of the website is mostly there for reference, the main attraction is our overarching theory.

We’re particularly interested in people poking holes in our reasoning, asking tricky questions, and challenging our claims!

A few guidelines:

1)Please do not tell us if we’re right or wrong!
2)Avoid giving us information or hints from beyond Episode 4. We’d like to figure things out ourselves!
3)Be careful with questions that might directly lead us to the answer! Think of your goal as making us squirm without leading us to the truth!
4)Asking a trick question to set us off the path is not only allowed, it’s encouraged! It makes dodging answers easier!

We are super interested in knowing what people think about this!

Challenge our blue truths!

Spoiler warning: Our theory was thought out with only information up to EP4, but we suspect we have correctly deduced a lot of things. We also accidentally picked up some details through osmosis. Please treat this theory as full spoilers. I would personally not like to read it without having finished Umineko.

Ryukishi said that if sayo revealed the truth about her body to George that he would accept her, but he never said anything about what would have happened if he discovered they were related.

This is the ideal way to draw Beato, refined but still looks like she's unhinged enough to bite Battler without reason or warning.

I'm on episode 2 of the Higurashi VN and everything kind of clicks into place and it becomes obvious that Umineko is Ryukishi's 2nd series.

They're both great, but Higurashi's experience once you get halfway into the episode is just pure dread with no break from the mystery, despite each episode being less than half the length it's still heavier to read because you don't have someone like Beato or Erika to be the lovable villain; they break up the reader's tension without harming the narrative's greater scope. I do think these long sections of isolation and paranoia work for Higurashi though.

Discussion Something bothers me about Beatrice’s appearance Spoiler

After finishing the game i still have a huge doubt about her appearance?? Its clearly known that her appearance (at least her witch form) was based on battlers idea of a perfect woman but then why does castiglioni look identical? It kinda contradicts eachother for me. How can she look identical (confirmed by kinzo’s made portrait) to castiglioni if sayo made her appearance later with battlers idea? Maybe im just extremely confused about something i missed?

Discussion The umineko anime is actually really good in my opinion.

i don’t understand why people hate on the anime for being a “poor adaptation” when personally its better than the visual novel, now i finished both the anime and all episodes of tje visual novel and i just preferred the anime more because it had better pacing compared to the visual novel, i felt like it kinda went straight to the point compared to the visual novel..

Discussion How do we feel about this theory (Ep 8) Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery

Ikuko ran Battler over on purpose, hoping for a miracle; he'd be brain-damaged enough to not ask questions, but still able to help with her writing. Keeping the only witness to Rokkenjima in a state of amnesia, preserving the mystery.

The Rokkenjima case would have reached a mystery fan like Ikuko within a few days. The two first met on a road, which implies Battler didn't drown and made it to land.

The timeline is plausible. It all could fit within 2-3 days of October 6th. The family still had to fly most of the way to Rokkenjima before taking the boat, so the island is a notable distance from mainland Japan. Battler's boat escape alone could account for that time.

Because the timelines matched, Ikuko could easily have deduced who he was, even if Battler hid his identity. At that point she could have advanced her mystery-writing career in countless ways, not just through vehicular assault.

Ikuko concealed the hit-and-run by swapping cars. Battler would have been in no condition to identify the vehicle that made him an incredible writer. She kept the secret because having him around was funny.

Discussion Riddle me this…

I should start by saying that, depending on if I get any comments at all, there MAY be spoilers ahead for those who haven’t finished the whole story.

That said, why is the anime considered bad? And before you start typing “it’s a bad adaptation. The Umineko anime doesn’t exist. Read the VN/Manga etc.” stop; I’m tired of seeing these repeated cold takes. I want actual answers as to why it’s considered a bad adaptation. Personally, I think the anime does a FAIR job at getting the main plot across, and I won’t shame it for trying its best to condense everything within such a short amount of time. I am also here to (hopefully lol) shut down some of the misconceptions about the alleged plot holes it has. I found it to be quite an enjoyable watch, even if it had to cut corners to get its information across. That said, I also personally don’t think it cut that much ESSENTIAL info. The only argument I can get behind is it forgetting to put a few things in red, but I’m pretty sure these are things that could’ve been addressed in the second season, if it had gotten it. If anything, that’s what I thought they had planned to do; purposely setting things up to then be explained in said second season. The other argument I could get behind as well is it rushing Episode 4 a bit too much..but again, it got its central theme across fairly well IMO. So, truly, why is it seen as such a terrible adaptation?
