Limited Sections

Post image

Hi everyone! I'm a sophomore and I'm trying to register for two accounting classes (ACCT 3120 and ACCT 3405). The issue is there's only three class options for each of these classes, which seems so foreign to me because usually there's more class options to pick from. I'm not sure if classes will be added soon or not. I called the accounting department to see if we will get more class sections later but it seemed like the person over the phone couldn't understand me. I just want to know if we will get more classes because just three class sections for cost accounting is ridiculous.

Nope, once you start getting into the 3-4000 level courses, especially accounting, you'll realize that they only have 1-2 profs for each class, most of mine next semester (all 4000) only had 2 choices, an online or an in-person class with the same prof. Just how it is, sadly

Oh brother! I did not know that!! do you think this course will be available over the summer? Turns out I've also hit my limit on the credits I can take next semester.

That's an advisor question tbh its easier to just ask an advisor a bunch of questions rather then try to guess because In IT at least we basically have nothing once you get to the 3000's for the Summer / Winter

I think cost accounting is offered over the summer? Usually they don't put accounting classes over the summer due to difficulty of the content, but I think cost is one of the exceptions to that

Cost accounting is supposed to be a fall class. There were way more options last semester and only 3 this semester so we just have to kinda deal with it unfortunately.

I guess its just 3 sections. The 3 4xxx level course that i need to take this sem to graduate has only 2 sections each. Take Neil Wilner.

Okay thank you so much. I had no idea that sections were limited as the classes got advanced.

Idk how other universities do but i guess we do not have a lot of professors for higher level classes. In my community college, we had a whole bunch of sections to select from. Schedule will be a mess here

Of course at CC there are a lot of sections since they are 1000 and 2000 level. Same here at UNT and all 4-yr schools. The upper level there are not as many students needing those courses each semester or as many professors that teach them since the demand is less.

You are right but the lower level classes availability here in UNT is still smaller than the cc i went.

As they should. UNT had more of an actual idea of how many students need any course at any given time. CC don’t since their application process is much easier and the fluidity of students is always changing. They also don’t have classrooms that can/will seat 50+ like a 4-yr school does.

Only the core classes get that many options, it drops a lot when you get into more specified classes. Especially 4000’s where sometimes there is a single section offered only in one semester

Welcome to upper level classes, the professors who teach them don’t teach many of them and most only have one professor per class

You’re not gonna see more sections added. You need to pick one of these three if that’s what you want to take next semester.

That would be a lot of sections for some colleges. Stuff in CLASS is often one section per course, usually limited to around 30 students or less. Pretty much no advanced courses there even remotely touch 100+ cap.

In general though, like others have said advanced course options tend to be smaller due to being more niche

My Philosophy ass was thinking "three whole sections?" Most of my major's classes get one section a year if you're lucky.
