Casual Academic

Hey guys,

Long story short, I applied for a casual academic role as a tutor for an engineering subject I scored highly in. The unit coordinator sent me an email about 3 weeks ago telling me I got the role and to wait while he allocates classes. A few days ago he sends a follow up email saying that he can no longer give me the class because “university guidelines have changed” and I can’t teach as an undergrad. He said I can apply for an exemption. Does anyone have any recommendations on next step. Should I contact head of engineering or SRC? Did anyone else experience anything similar?

Answering the 3 most common questions on this subreddit

Every semester I see the same 3 questions asked on this subreddit from new students so here is a quick answer to them lol:

  1. Should I come here or go to UNSW/UniMelb?

Answer: The prestige difference between Usyd and those 2 unis is, for the most cases, much smaller than people think. Also, most of us here never attended UNSW or UniMelb. Do your own research.

  1. Should I join Dalyell?

Answer: Yes. You can always leave later if you don’t like it.

  1. Is my timetable good?

Answer: If there is any red, there is a clash that you wanna look into. Otherwise, yea its probably fine. Please be aware of your attendance requirements (should be written in the UoS outline - just google the course code and you should see it)

EDIT: There are some very good Q and A for other questions in the comments. Be sure to check them out!

Chance of getting the International Undergraduate Academic Excellence Scholarship? Be brutally honest lol

Hey everyone,

I’m looking into applying to USYD and really want to shoot my shot for the Sydney International Undergraduate Academic Excellence Scholarship (the 100% tuition full-ride).

Just wanted to get a realistic vibe check on my chances because I know it's insanely competitive.

My profile:

Academics: Got 625/625 points on the Irish Leaving Cert (the absolute max, equivalent to 4 As in the UK).

Context: I moved from Belgium to Ireland at 17 and had to do the entire two-year senior cycle (5th and 6th year) into just one single year instead of two.

ECs / Background: Back in Belgium I did Latin & Ancient Greek. I also used to do theater, played soccer, and coached/refereed U12 youth teams. Currently just running, hitting the gym, and working a part-time supermarket job.

Honestly, idk if USYD cares about ECs and context at all for this specific merit scholarship, or if it's purely based on grades from high school and ATAR numbers.

Has anyone actually won this full tuition scholarship before? What are my actual chances? Pls be realistic, thanks!

Anyone at USYD interested in conlanging (creating your own languages)?

Hi everyone!

I'm curious if there are any conlangers or people interested in constructed languages here at USYD.

I've recently started exploring the idea of creating my own language, but I'm still very much a beginner. I'm particularly interested in how languages are designed, including grammar, semantics, and the ideas behind languages like Ithkuil, Lojban, and Esperanto.

I'd love to meet others who share this interest, especially anyone with experience in conlanging who might be willing to share some advice.

Would anyone be interested in chatting about conlangs or perhaps having a casual meetup on campus sometime?

You don't need to have created a language yourself — anyone who's curious about language creation is welcome! Just feel free to text me!

Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Science

Hi guys! I was wondering how competitive it is to receive an offer for the Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Science at USYD, how high the demand is for the course, and how flexible the degree is.

I’d love to hear any insights or experiences from current or past students. Happy to have a chat as well!

(Domestic Student!)

Internal transfer applications for 2027

Hi, I’m a first-year USYD student and suspended my studies this semester. I’m looking to transfer into the Bachelor of Education for 2027, does anyone know when applications open and if the process is just done through Sydney Student?

Has anyone started the process for a transfer?

Accepting bachelor offer whilst waiting for a Master

Hi! I was wondering someone could please help me.
I applied for a Masters directly with USYD and was put on the waitlist and was told I will be considered in future rounds. I also applied for the bachelors program in case I don’t get accepted into the masters, and I recently was offered a place for it (this one was applied through UAC)

Question: if I accept the bachelors for now as a back up, would I still be considered for the Masters? I don’t want to lose my place in the waitlist. The Masters is my first preference

Is the Engineering/Commerce double degree at USYD worth it

I’m considering studying a Bachelor of Engineering Honours and Bachelor of Commerce at USYD and wanted to hear from current students or graduates.

How useful have you found the double degree in terms of career opportunities, employability, and salary potential compared to doing Engineering alone? Also, how manageable is the workload? Is balancing both degrees significantly more difficult, and do you still have time for extracurriculars, internships, and a social life?

Would you recommend the double degree, or would it be better to focus on Engineering alone?

BIOL1007 - easy or hard final exam?

Anyone whos taken BIOL1007 in the past, how would you describe the final exam (would you say the questions were quite similar to the weekly lecture quizzes we are given, and I would imagine that its possible that quite a few questions would be directly copied from those q bank's, was that the case?)

Considering dropping out

Hey guys, I’m seeking advice on what you would do in my situation
I’m at the end of my first years of my degree. I do an arts degree and I enjoy my first major, but I just discontinued failed my second major which I only started this semester btw).
Overall I haven’t had an amazing time at University. I moved from a rural community to Sydney (domestic student), and although I’ve since made some great friends and I’m involved in a society, I just wake up miserable most days.
University seemed important to me as I’m the first in my family to go and I felt like I was ‘too smart’ to let my brains go to waste.
However, at the end of Highschool I was looking into other options in case I didn’t get into university/changed my mind. One of those options was the defence force.
The benefits and pay are good, and honestly, what are the chances of it making my life worse than it is now? I already have a few ideas of what jobs I’d go for, and I spoke to some recruiters last year so I have a good idea what the process is like.
If you were in my shoes, what would you do? I honestly feel so stuck, so if anyone has any advice or ideas, or even other options that I’m not thinking about, please lmk!

📖Course or Unit Complaint about Unit Co ordinator?

I want to complain about a unit co-ordinator (and the only lecturer/tutor in the course) — teaches a unit in the Law school.

Never properly prepared for classes, never goes through the actual content, just sits at the front and yaps about his own personal opinions for the 4 hours. Never listens to people's questions or answers them properly, and doesn't really even know the law that well (dodges basic questions students have).

Midsem assignment due 5.5 weeks ago but hasn't got it back to us yet. It's one class with 30 people...

Not really sure who to complain to. Dean? Complaints? Cheers

🎪 Clubs and Societies [College Sleep & Wake-Up Survey]

Hi! We are Team GaeUn, currently researching college students’ sleep patterns and morning wake-up experiences.

Have you ever gone to bed early or gotten enough sleep, but still woken up thinking:

“Why don’t I feel refreshed?”

We are conducting a short survey to better understand how often college students experience unrefreshing mornings, how they currently deal with them, and to use these insights to develop a service that helps people wake up feeling more refreshed.

- Eligibility: Undergraduate and graduate students

- Time required: About 5 minutes

- Topics: Sleep habits, how refreshed you feel in the morning, and the methods you currently use to improve your sleep or wake-up experience

- Purpose: Customer validation and development of a service designed to help users have more refreshing mornings

- Survey period: 15–27, October 2026

We would really appreciate it if you could answer based on your actual experiences 🙌

Thank you for your participation!❤️❤️

🏠 Accommodation Accomodation advice! I’m super stressed about price :(

Im currently in highschool and I was recently offered a studio at Kensington USYD. Tjeyre so fancy and nice… However, it is so incredibly expensive ($780 ish a week with early bird discount) and I don’t know if it’s worth it. Is that normal? That’s like $32k a year! Firstly, it’s a bit of a distance from the campus, and I understand that there is good transport and a free shuttle but I was hoping I’d get into Abercrombie or Regiment, something closer and cheaper. Why is it so expensive!? A different university is actually my first choice but the accomodation applications haven’t even come out for that school yet, so I’m not sure if Id be able to secure another place to live next year. Apparently all the accomodation in camperdown/darlington is completely FULL. What should I do? I could accept the offer but USYD isn’t my first choice and it’s a lot of money. Should I consider an outside accomodation provider? I really do want to live in a studio.

Edit: I’m also really confused as to why I didn’t receive an offer for my choices in Camperdown/Darlington. I literally applied within the first 20 minutes. Are they reserving accomodation for other students or was everyone else just faster?

Made a free map of cheap feeds around campus and Newtown (85 at $15 or less)

I made a free map of Sydney meals that are $15 or less, and there are 85 around campus, Newtown and Glebe so far. A few:

- Chips and feta wrap, $10.20, Carslaw Kitchen

- Fried chicken wrap, $9.50, Clem's Chicken Shop

- Pork roll, $10, Newtown Pork Roll

- Beef burger, $10, Hideout

- Handmade noodles with pork mince and bean sauce, $11.80, Dumpling Time

Each one has the full price, any catch, and whether it's open now. No ads, no sign-up to look: www.brokemap.com.au

There are definitely cheap spots around uni I haven't found. If you know one, add it (I check them before they go up), or flag a price that's changed.
