Question Very late exam season

Why was UVic so pushed back for start and end dates compared to other schools this year? Finals shouldn’t go to the 23rd (I have only ONE final and it’s right at the end in such a small class). Imagine your final is on the 23rd at 7pm, you’re flying home on Christmas Eve with very likely delays/cancellations.. sounds like some Christmas vacation catastrophe, thanks UVic!

It's because Labour Day was Sept 7 this year. When it falls earlier in the month, the exam period ends earlier.

That actually makes perfect sense.

This is true, however, I know other universities who started September 1st no problem

Just curious, do you know which ones in BC started their Fall semester before Labour Day this year?

I’m not sure of ones in BC, but I know of prairie schools that started September 1st this year

I'd hate to be the person that has to grade exams written on the 23rd.

Oh absolutely, I wish there was a standard cut off of say December 20th or 22nd at the most. The last few years I believe it’s usually been the 22nd but we started so late this year

To fit all the exams in, there needs to be 2 weeks of exams.

To fit all of the content into the courses, there needs to be ~35/36 lectures.

Classes start the Wednesday after labour day.

I think these are the three guiding principles behind the schedule.

I agree there should be a cut off. whoever makes these decisions is out of their tree, for real.

I think the general guide is that we get 1 week from the exam to do marking, but that doesn't include holidays. So exams on the 23rd aren't pressured to be marked until probably the new year.

I feel worse for the students than the instructors.

As an instructor who had an exam at 7pm on the 20th last year… trust me, we don’t like it either.

It’s brutal how late exams go this year, but my only hope is that they don’t have all the massive classes at the very end of the exam schedule. It sucks when they have the really popular classes with 400+ people in them at the very start, and very end of the exam schedule.

Like I get that these are probably the hardest courses to plan around, so they try to have them close to the start or end of the schedule, making it easier to plan around, but it’s brutal when MATH 100, PSYC 100A, CHEM 102 and whatever other hugely popular courses are all either on like the December 10th and 11th, or December 22nd and 23rd, and no in-between.

Honestly I’m used to having the large classes at the end of the final exam schedule, been there done that. Thats why I’m wondering why my 40 person class is so late. Cant escape the late finals even in your fourth year

Christmas isn’t in the policy.

I have one final, and it's in the evening of my birthday, this both sucks and blows

... At least yours a posted. The provisional date and time for the final exam for one of my classes isn't listed...

Oh weird. I guess it’s still preliminary so things aren’t confirmed until end of October. Maybe you don’t have a final exam after all 😅

We’ve all been there, sucked it up, and just soldiered on.

Somehow, I think you’ll survive

It’s annoying, but like what the other commenters said, it’s because of Labour Day. Rule of thumb is that if Labour Day is on a Monday, then the schools and universities start a week late

I like to be with my family on Christmas and Christmas Eve and even a bit before personally, to bake things and set up the tree with family but it’s fine

Reality and what you want.. that’s being an adult.

u/Levontiis 5h ago

Not really. Our entire reality has been fabricated and structured in a way that was never forcefully laid out for humans when we first existed. We choose to follow the system because everybody else is

What are you going to do when you are working up to christmas eve like the bulk of us in society are? Grow up.

Let me break this down for you to comprehend. If I were in my current province of residence, I would see my family in the evenings after work. Since I am a student in a different province than my family, I don’t get to see my family for the entire semester. Therefore, I like to have the most time that I can get with them, hope this helps!

lol everyones miserable, i get what you mean, that sucks.

Yeah I still don’t understand. Maybe you need more to do if you are literally planning on seeing your family all the time as an adult.
Possibly you are just salty bc you want more time off between semesters? But again grow up.
