Amazingly, no serious injuries are being reported. Not sure how, but that's what's being reported.

It's been updated again, 2 serious but stable, 11 minor https://surreynowleader.com/2026/10/16/bus-truck-crash-closes-highway-99-in-both-directions-in-south-surrey/

Thanks for the additional update. Crazy that information is put out without it being verified but okay.
Thoughts and prayers for those involved!

The dashcam footage was aired on BCTV 6pm news. I'm very worried about the bus driver. The semi made cars bounce like billiard balls. Absolutely terrifying.

Oh, that poor red car. They got it hard.

u/Practical-State-5019 8h ago
Yeah I am concerned for whoever was in that little red car . There was a second red car on the left . But the one that was worse was hit by the semi then the bus . Horrible.

That's probably the two serious but stable people if I had to guess. One has already been discharged from hospital apparently

Testimate to the designers of the bus. Took it like a champ and saved lives.

And we know the effectiveness of that bungycord shit they have in the meridian.

It did manage to prevent an 80,000 lb semi & load from completely obliterating the oncoming traffic.

And you wanna get rid of the 2nd road test 😂😂😂😂

Would the driver in question not require a commercial license? Honest question, don't attack me lol

That's by design. Those cables aren't intended to protect property, only protect life. They work better at restraining vehicles

So long as you're not a motorcyclist...

Nothing protects you as a motorcyclist. Pro tip - don't be a motorcyclist.

There is no design that could realistically save the lives of people who recklessly choose to use the recreational suicide machine.
-1
u/Tramd 10h ago
It's a recreational suicide machine largely because of other people's vehicles.
I suppose we could all just get bigger and heavier SUVs to protect ourselves and kill the other guy.

Most motorcycle riders kill themselves in single vehicle collisions.

u/Tramd 9h ago
More than half of motorcycle fatalities involved a collision between two or more vehicles
https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/daily-quotidien/230515/dq230515b-eng.htm
while 38% of fatalities resulted from a single-motorcycle event.
'Most'

Lots of good data in that link. More than half of motorcycle fatalities are linked to excessive speed, this compares to 20% in the general population.
Accidents with motor bikes are far more likely to result in a fatality period. This is not the fault of everyone else, no one is forced to ride.

Nobody claimed it wasn't more dangerous; I'm just pointing out someone talking out of their ass. Anyone sharing the road with vehicles while not being in one also accepts this risk.
No one is forced to drive either yet it is the single most dangerous thing people do every single day.

That truck driver should lose his license. Did he even look? Wild. Hope bus driver is ok.
84
u/ledorky 22h ago
To me it looked like there was a prior accident and the truck swerved to avoid it. I guess we will find out soon.

I wrote same thing on another post of this accident. There are 2 red cars and one black truck and semi on the left side of the median.
The video starts after an impact has already occurred. There is red suv (presumably Audi) which swerves to median and gets themselves stuck into ditch but are able to drive off before semi could hit them but looking at some more photos red suv has rear damage on its right side. It seems definitely from first collision that isn't captured in the footage since semi misses them when it swerves into median
There is red sedan which has turned 90 degree from a hit when it appears in the video and there is black truck which has turned 180. When the truck appears in the video, it has serious damage to rear trunk and bumper.
The semi tried swerving and maybe caused the chain reaction but why did he swerve in first place?
Also praying for that translink driver. They have done tremendous job reducing impact and saving lives of passengers.

The proper response for the truck is to not try and swerve but to brake straight and keep his truck from going into opposing traffic, plowing into the wrecked cars is preferable to hitting oncoming traffic.
Typical with the internet people commenting have no idea what they’re talking about. Semi trailer drivers are taught during their training not to swerve in situations like these for a multitude of reasons as swerving is the far more dangerous option.
The outcome here with no fatalities was pure luck and he absolutely made the wrong move throwing his truck into oncoming traffic.

u/slimspida 21h ago
Yeah, it’s hard to see exactly what happened in front of the truck considering the video length and the position of the camera car, but swerving probably saved lives. He cut hard and didn’t roll right through the red car that spun out ahead of him.
The cables also did their job.

Yeah, I’ve zoomed in and watched that beginning like 10 times now: the semi and the bus driver are fucking heroes honestly, plus a good chunk of luck.
If the semi didn’t swerve, he would have hit TWO vehicles at full speed head on. He swerves and just barely clips them instead. Ideally he would’ve stayed in the grassy median so the oncoming traffic was really lucky. Everyone was
The bus driver breaks and swerves gently and, while they do hit, it’s at an auspiciously slower velocity thanks to their braking
This was so close to being far worse wow

u/Typical-Blackberry-3 21h ago
You try to decide who to hit and possibly kill in the 10 milliseconds they had to make that decision. No one died, so that is good.

You think a semi hauling a 53’ container going 80 km/h is going to be able to “brake straight and keep his truck from going into opposing traffic”?
9
u/Specialist-Day-8116 21h ago
At that speed that truck would’ve definitely killed or severely injured the occupants of the vehicles. The swerve maneuver, though increasing the number of vehicles involved, actually saved lives.

u/Beevas69 21h ago
If he brakes straight, he will absolutely annihilate anything in front of him. Those cables absorbed so much energy. This was easily the best outcome in this scenario...by complete fluke.

u/ehyamwhatayam 10h ago
Looks like the semi failed to slow down for the slowing traffic in front of them, smashed into the black suv and the red car before going across into the opposite lane. Looking at the other semi behind, also pretty freaking close to back of the one that is crashing. I bet this was caused by the semi not leaving enough safe distance in front of them.
So many drivers in GVRD fail at this, sitting a car length away at highway speeds.
1
u/Pale_Sun5630 4h ago
This Galaxy semi, not kidding, used to drive recklessly on this highway. No blind spot check and merge without turning lights almost hit me weeks ago. Somebody should REALLY look into these truck drivers on how did they obtained their license.
1
u/Cool_Salamander_8284 16h ago
Wow, I think the double decker bus saved red car's life. The truck would have pinned it to the embankment, but the bus absorbed a lot of the truck's momentum

u/DmntdGhstofRexMurphy 21h ago
Another day, another semi driver getting people hurt.
4
u/llandthejam 8h ago
There were at least three cars in a crash before the semi got to them and swerved to miss them.
