Alm's armour design from original Fire Emblem Gaiden is very... hard to look at

His redesign in echoes is one of the best designs of the franchise though.

Why are they all so hunched over?

Whoever designed this character absolutely feels the need to decorate the doorknobs in their house.

ALL SPACE MUST BE FILLED.

What get's me is that whenever you look at it you find a new thing that's weird.

For example, did you notice his shoes have mini-heels?

104

u/Chamberchez Jul 03 '26

And the Bitcoin trashcan lids hanging off his elbows(???)

73

u/LWSpinner Jul 03 '26

His redesign for his cameo in the FFT remake is so much better. I'm so glad the style of FFTA2 kept me from having to look at Luso as anything like that official design. Just his head in dialogue and a low-rez sprite 90% of the time.

It isnt his official design but it's gotta be this guy.

Looks like he's fighting with an oncoming shit while experiencing the worst acid trip, hunting the mean, fractalline streets of Vegas for a port-a-potty. He doesnt even know where he got the gun, but he's glad to have it since everybody else seems to have turned into evil robo-nightmares.

28

u/thewalkindude368 Jul 03 '26

I'm guessing these two are the guardians of the legendary Pokémon in Sword and Shield, and their names reflect that. There's only so much you can do when a name has to have "Sword" or "Shield" in it

31

u/Cobraven-9474 Jul 04 '26

From memory they are post game characters, they are remnants of a fading aristocracy and really embody the upper class twit.

I mostly remember that during their story there are several points in the plot where they are trying to steal stuff, you soundly beat their whole Pokemon team then they escape, and by escape I mean they casually walk past you and your fully levelled and healthy Pokemon with what ever ill gotten gains they were after. I absolutely yelled "Stop them they are defenseless and you are letting them go."

I feel they were supposed to be hate sinks.

There actually IS a good reason for this

The twist of the game is that this character is actually a sort of "puppet" designed by the big-bad. He hides the tell-tale sign of such underneath his hat.

The other main character, Mint, has a more regular design.

But the rest of the outfit is clearly piggybacking off of that late 90's early 2000's FF aesthetic, where there's wayy to many belts for no reason and everything is asymmetrical.

u/CuteAssTigerENVtuber Jul 03 '26

Concord is such a fascinating case.

They don't look so ugly that you remember them. They just look so bland that you forget them as soon as you stop looking at them

205

u/RiverTough6712 Jul 03 '26

Exactly. You look at the characters and you can't even tell what each one is supposed to do or what they're supposed to communicate. You know the designs are bad, but you probably couldn't recreate any of them from memory.

56

u/Jent01Ket02 Jul 03 '26

Medic from TF2 : Doctor in a white coat with big red gloves for surgery. Has a few pockets on a belt that presumably carry more tools for the job (bandages and so on). Has a special scifi healing gun connected to a portable battery pack. Clearly a medic.

The "medic" from Concord : Big...man? Woman? In a bright blue rubber coat, carrying a tiny smg, no pockets, no bag, no clear sign of what they use to heal anybody, looks more like an electrician that was given last-minute combat training.

The game fundamentally fails the primary goal of character design for games, especially for its genre. At first glance, you should have a general idea of what they do or how they play. But if you told me THAT was their healer, I'd think you were lying to my face.

u/VonBrewskie Jul 03 '26

My eye slides off this photo like a marble in chicken grease. It's like they coated the game in Teflon that only affects my interest. It's really fascinating. A game so ground down and edgeless, so "design by committee" that nothing sticks. Not even hatred. Not even disinterest. It's just a void. Really kind of incredible in the worst, most uninteresting way.

23

u/RiverTough6712 Jul 03 '26

This. The worst thing a hero shooter can be isn't ugly, it's forgettable. Even bad designs can become iconic because people remember them. Concord's biggest achievement was making characters that leave your brain the moment you stop looking at them. You remember there was a guy that looks like a giant vacuum cleaner, or that there was supposedly a healer, but you can't actually picture what either of them looked like. That's a huge problem for a game that's supposed to sell its characters.

u/Necessary_Pace7377 Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

Final Fantasy’s art style is already pretty infamous for over-designing their characters, but OP’s example is a special kind of bad. You have:

- The giant, glass sword-like object. It’s ugly and only resembles a sword in the loosest possible sense.

  • The sword-adjacent thing has a chain attaching it to itself, for some reason.
  • The giant back scabbard that doesn’t fit the alleged sword in the slightest.
  • Whole ass bucklers for elbow pads.
  • A big medal-looking thing on his chest with a four-leaf clover. Is it supposed to be lucky?
  • An oversized, poofy beret with a horsetail crest. Honestly the least offensive item here, but the placement of the crest makes it look like a rabbit ear.
  • Two oversized belts.
  • A big green sash in addition to the belts. Seems to serve no purpose other than to add color contrast to the beret.
  • A great big pouch to trip over holding an oversized…book? Is that supposed to be a book? Plus some other pointless metal bits.
  • Overalls with big holes in them over a dark red one piece jump suit.
  • Socks with cuffs!? Which extend way past his ankles. Major tripping hazard.
  • High-heeled boots with spats, because sure, why not?

I honestly can’t tell anything about what this character is supposed to be aside from an FF protagonist. And that’s mostly because of the giant sword-adjacent object. Is he a mechanic going to a Ren Fair? A landsknecht who dabbles in steampunk engineering and ice sculpting? I have no clue.

EDIT: I have been corrected. There is no back scabbard. It is, in fact, another sword. Oversized, of course, but it does otherwise resemble a functional weapon. Though the fact you can’t hardly tell it’s there through the rest of the visual clutter is not a point in this design’s favor, either.

I know this is general character designs, but I wanna do a shout out to resident evil 7 Chris who had such a change regarding his character model that people were convinced, even though he said his name, that he was an entirely different character altogether. I don't personally think it's the worst, but I'm adding it purely for the sake it was so strange the entire fanbases was confused until the DLC. For whatever reason Capcom just doesn't want to stick to a consistent character model for Chris.

57

u/Lilbulsshit Jul 03 '26

Haha, the bouncer, I have a nice spot in my heart for these designs that just just reek of edgyness and "swag" but you have to wonder, wtf was going on through their minds when coming up with designs like these? did they just told him to recreate grown up sora but to not make it obvious?

u/Red-Fox-IX Jul 03 '26

u/MyStationIsAbandoned Jul 03 '26

Sion. This guy and the game also came out before kingdom hearts. so Sora is the kid version, not the other way away.

i think it's obviously a case of reusing a character concept. every artist does it. like, there's at least 15 different version of Rick and Morty that started off at Doc and Marty

The Bouncer was a weird-ass game, but in a endearing way.

It's a flawed experiment, story and gameplay-wise, but I have to give credit points to Squaresoft and DreamFactory for trying to do something different.

16

u/Songbird_Storyteller Jul 03 '26

Sion's design somehow manages to be extremely loudly Nomura while also being one of Nomura's more subdued characters, visually speaking.

The MC from Fire Emblem Engage amazes me every time I see it for how awful it looks. It looks like a little kid vomited all over the character designs after eating a bunch of brightly colored candies.

135

u/Al_Hakeem65 Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

Ah yes, Colgate-Chan and Pepsi-Kun

Allegedly the designers wanted FE Engage characters to be inspired by VTuber models

Mission successful, I'd say, but VTubers are overdesigned on purpose because the models can't actually do that much. It's overkill in an actual game

Never forget how there was once a time when Google searching "Bad character design" would bring up this image of Rex from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 as the first result.

its like 10 different good designs individually being mixed together like mashed potato, skittles, siracha, sleeping pills, rocks, orange juice, worm and leftover alligator meat.

So many of Baten Kaitos' designs are weird as hell and I love them.

12

u/Planeswalker18 Jul 03 '26
  1. Total agree on the outfit, especially the wings he gets.

  2. Baten Kaitos mention makes me very happy.

I’ll probably get flamed by the FF12 fans, but…Vaan. wtf is this.

35

u/RagnarStonefist Jul 03 '26

all of the character costumes are whack (Except Balthier). note - this game really likes exposed navels

-Penelo, with her form fitting clothes that seem more like maybe something you'd wear under a spacesuit

-Asche, who has a top that makes her boobs look really weird but also a tight red miniskirt/shorts combo?

-Basch, who has relatively normal clothes except that the part that should be covering his stomach is buttoned weird, exposing abs that you could shred cheese on

-Fran, who is a Viera, a race of rabbit-women who live in the jungle. Every single member of her species goes about their business in lingerie. Fran's ass makes a prominent appearance in the game.

-Balthier, who is dressed normally and somehow the hottest one here.

Yea man this was terrible. It's like they were trying to recapture the popularity of Tidus from 10 and it just didn't work. Like, at all.

u/christofilth Jul 03 '26

I dunno, if we are picking FF12 characters surely it has to be Penelo? She is blander than a bread sandwich.

30

u/189charizard Jul 03 '26

I was gonna toss an honorable mention to her. Yee yee ass haircut.

u/TammyShehole Jul 03 '26

Why did they do to my Qunari? Remember Sten and the Arishok? Now they were true Qunari.

10

u/1ZillionBeers Jul 04 '26

The genuine, and I shit you not, true reason they changed Qunari is because their diversity and inclusion consultant told them that making the Qunari brutal and too different from humans was problematic and indicative of racism.

Rex from Xenoblade Chronicles 2

127

u/vocaloidKR03 Jul 03 '26

On the subject of Rex, my man gets a massive glow up in the following game.

43

u/Careless_Ad2194 Jul 03 '26

THATS THE SAME GUY?????

49

u/TakoGoji Jul 03 '26

And those swords are two of his three wives.

18

u/Ourmanyfans Jul 03 '26

Those swords are just recreations of his wives.

His actual wives are (probably) being wielded by his great-great-grandson through that third wife.

Shalua Rui from Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII. I don't know if it's the ridiculous skirt or just the fact that she's supposed to be a scientist who dresses sexy at work for no apparent reason, but her design is notoriously bad.

In lotr shadow of war when they turned Shelob, a cool huge gross immortal spider into a super generic sultry brunette human looking woman for literally no reason at all, like literally zero, there is absolutely no bit of lotr lore anywhere saying Shelob has ever taken any form of human appearance.

Just crusty ass executives deciding the spider needed to have sex appeal.

Tolkien would be doing backflips in his grave if he saw that shit.
