I really disliked the originals. Kratos struck me as little more than a raging baboon who did little more than make bad situations worse and solve them with violence. I never completed 3 or tried the newer ones just because of how much I came to dislike him.
I might be biased because it was the first game me and my now wife played together, but she would come over to my house chill and watch me play God of War 2018 while we talked.
The pacing was just amazing, it would have enough story elements dropped in to keep her entertained and we both just had an amazing time with it.
It is probably my favorite game ever, but I think a lot of that is because it's very linked to the early relationship days of me and my wife.
I remember that not really being the case when Raganrok launched. Everyone was proclaiming how it was "better in every way". Yes, it has some better mechanics and neat looking environments. But over all, it just felt like a worse experience.
I personally didnt care for it. Combat felt clunky and unresponsive. Like some of edges of rooms didnt work the way they should. So even if you threw your axe at an enemy to get them stuck in the wall they just slid along it instead.
I mean, games used to largely be 12-15 hours long. And even now, a linear AAA game is usually 18-25 hours long.
Playing through the main story of Spider-Man 2, with some collecting, exploration, and side content, can still run only around 14-16 hours. And that is a $70 game.
If you disliked the older games I reckon you’ll much prefer the newer games. He’s a much more calm and reasonable character in the new games, especially Ragnarok
On the surface it sure looks like that. In reality, Kratos is a much more complex and tragic character who was basically fucked over by the gods his entire life until he decided to fight back. Then it turns into a greek tragedy where Kratos is too angry to stop and the gods are too arrogant to see their wrong, ultimately ending up in the destruction of the world.
Others have said this already but I really think this makes the new games a great fit for you.
It starts with an older and more calm Kratos. He himself somewhat hates what he's done. A lot of the story is about him seeing his past mistakes and becoming a good father for Atreus.
His character development is probably my favorite thing about the new games.
Kratos struck me as little more than a raging baboon who did little more than make bad situations worse and solve them with violence
On the surface. There's a mini game where he has to push his daughter away from him. There's also a mini game where instead of you bashing your opponents head like a baboon, you hug illusions of your wife and daughter to replenish their health. The original games doesn't get a lot of praise for incorporating gameplay mechanics and turning in that way. They're already deep and touching if you have the capacity to engage beyond it's violence and gory surface. Which again resembles Kratos.
Very subtle rather than the new one where he just screams boy boy boy. The gameplay is also fun so that's a plus.
If anything I'd say I prefer young Kratos to old Kratos, not every character needs to be super complex morally grey anti hero to be enjoyable
Old Kratos is fine, I don't hate him but I definitely don't prefer him over a rageroid shortstack (in comparison to his enemies) that absolutely beats the crap out of them
i second nohumanape on the sequels, 2018 and Ragnarok are phenomenal games. A big part of Kratos' character is that he doesn't want to be that 'raging baboon' anymore, I think because of that the story itself has a lot more emotional depth and nuance than the originals. I highly recommend checking it out at least, jacksepticeye has a pretty good playthrough of it if you wanna look at it first.
Same, my friend's hyped up how Kratos would indiscriminately murder everything for very bad reasons. I learned Dad of War made him an incredibly different character and at that point in life I was on a norse mythology kick so I played it and enjoyed every part. I did get the collection of the originals but I still don't like them at all. Can't even power through them.
That's exactly who he was. Yes. Especially during the third game where he was utterly consumed by hatred. To be honest it was quite different from most other video game protagonists at the time. It was refreshing and at the same time a fantastic outlet for a teenager like me back then with raging hormones and anger issues.
If thisnis in fact why you disliked the originals rhen you should at least try the new ones. I don't want to give any spoilers but I feel the new ones don't fit that description.
Dude im something like that, greek kratos is for me an angry goku, just punches everything and gets a power up to defeat his enemies. However i cant say the same for the new kratos, they actually made him a character
I couldn't do the remake. I loved the story of the first game but the following two did not have great stories. That being said, I did quite enjoy the gameplay of them, and the new God of War just doesn't seem to capture that very well.
The gameplay of the original God of wars and the new one are very different. The new gameplay doesn't really capture the same spirit as the old one did.
No, I've played plenty of other games? I just don't find the gameplay from the new God of war Game to be especially engaging nor do I find the story to be especially engaging. I think Yahtzee Croshaw does a fairly decent video explaining what the issues some people have with the new games are. I also can't say I appreciate your response. If you had fun with a new games more power to you they just didn't do it for me.
Ragnarok had some extremely boring sections. For example the swamp was a walking simulator and the final battle was less climactic than 2018's final fight
I'd argue they're talking about 2018/rag instead of 123
The great thing is there are actually 6 classic GOW games - not just the trilogy. If you’ve not played them I totally recommend Ascension - Chains of Olympus - Ghost of Sparta.
I was really looking forward to 2018 until I saw that they had changed the format from arena-scale mob combat to chase-cam. Lost all interest immediately. GOWs 1 through 3 were such insane joys to just rampage through.
I have really good memories from 1,2 and especially 3. But 2018 for me was just ok, and I had to force myself a bit to finish Ragnarok. They are beautiful, but extremely linear, the characters tell you everything you have to do, the combat system is good but you almost need a PHD in gaming to remember all the possible combos. I played Ragnarok just after finishing Elden Ring and damn, I was bored.
The new games are just so annoying. The puzzle issue that others point out is high up on the list of nitpicks that kill the reboot for me. On the gameplay side, it’s not a nitpick. I cannot stand the 3PS camera for a hack and slash. It’s so annoying and frustrating to play with.
I lost all interest in 2018 when I saw that change. GOWs 1 through 3 were true adrenaline rushes that from all the clips I've seen just can't be replicated by the new format.
I just really did not like Atreus. Like, that kid got on my fucking nerves and I tried to meet him half way. But he actively makes 2018 hard to go back to and made it impossible for me to get through Ragnarok.
I played it for about 13 hours it's not too bad but I was bored. Maybe metroidvania games aren't for me. The story wasn't smthg I absolutely had to know. I will try and finish it someday maybe. Didn't feel like god of war to me.
I bounced off it a few years ago and then came back and gave it another chance. It really is incredible. Story, writing, VA, music, graphics etc. it's the game that I'm looking forward to playing when I finish work at the moment.
I bought Spider-Man Remastered for PC around the same time though and I can't seem to connect to that. I will likely give it another chance after I'm done with Kratos.
I brought a PS3 just to play the trilogy, didn't care for them then I sold it all lol. I did enjoy watching a YouTuber play the Norse games though, but playing didn't interest me.
No one wants to hear it, but the OG GoW sucks. GoW2 was a big improvement, but GoW3 really ramped things up. Still, the PSP games are my favorite. Their pacing is impeccable
Go play it again. It's extremely tedious and repetitive and has a bunch of dogshit quick-time events and button hammering. There's only two bosses in the entire game. It's the OG movie game.
Yeah same. The whole "Raaaaah, I'm so angry and manly" BS makes me see Kratos as a meathead and it takes me right out of it. Game for Chads, especially the early ones.
The second game literally starts with him killing himself because if grief. Kratos is a far more multilayered character in the original than the newer ones.

I do not care for God of War either.
