Image / Video Two minute apart from each other

Post image

This is just wild. PlayStation wanted to end their partnership with Hideo Kojima. So Xbox was like: "Your loss."

This year is really starting to feel like an inverse of 2014 when Xbox ruined their public image with some insane Always Online DRM requirements and PlayStation capitalized on that.

They have lost their damn minds. Kojima WAS Playstation for so damn long because of Metal Gear. Kojima is doing a new stealth game and you let him WALK? AFTER DEATH STRANDING????

I loved the 2nd one but seems like it fell short of expectations

Death Stranding games didn't perform well though. DS1 barely hit around 10 mil sales after 7 years, and DS2 crawled it's way to 2 mil sales this year. Those sale numbers plus the insane budgets that Kojima demands really aren't a good look and probably the reason Sony walked away. Sony probably saw no reason on dumping money onto Kojima and his game that's several years away, when they can just dump that same amount into multiple first party projects that'll all outperform a Kojima title. Astro Bot and Yotei both have double the sales of DS2 while being 1/5 of the budget each.

I want you to think about how ridiculous what you just said is. "barely" hit ten million sales. Ten. Million. Sales. DS2 "crawled" to 2 million. I understand those aren't call of duty numbers, but acting like those numbers are pathetic is insane. Most developers would KILL to sell 2 million copies.

Thosw numbers would be decent if the games weren't absurdly expensive. DS1 hit 10 mil sales after 7 years on a reportrd budget of 100 mil minimum, GT7 hit 10 mil after 4 years on a budget of around 60 mil. Like i said earlier, DS2 hit 2 mil sales after a year with a budget that's reportedly between 150 mil and 300mil. Astro bot and Yotei doubled that in the same time frame with budgets of around 60 mil. DS1 did okay, but DS2 without a doubt underperformed heavily. Sony took issue with Spiderman 2 having such a bloated budget at around 300 mil despite it hitting 17 mil sales, so they're obviously gonna take issue with DS2 having a similar sized budget and only selling 2 mil copies.

You're right, most devs would kill for 2 mil sales, but most devs don't have a nine digit budget they need to compensate for. And plenty of devs do hit that 2 mil mark while on significantly smaller budgets. Silent Hill F and SH2R both matched and outsold DS2 at the one year mark despited having budgets of around 30 mil each. 2 mil copies on such a high budget game is seriously not a good result.

The fact that consumers are over here focusing on sales numbers is fucking weird lmfao. Not a single one of you works for Sony, why do you care so much about how many copies the games sold? The question should be are the games GOOD? And the answer is yes.

lol grow up dude. Developers don't get funding just cause they make a good game, the game also needs to sell and make a profit. It's a business after all not a charity.

It's not weird to focus on sales numbers when speculating why a business would have made a certain decision. Idgaf how many copies a game has sold, but the point is that Sony does and that game sales influence the choices they make, which in turn influences the products we get.

DS2's lackluster sales are probably what caused Sony to split from Kojima and Physint, and Sony splitting from Kojima and Physint is literally what this whole thread is about.

I'm glad you don't run a games studio. Dear lord.

But Kojima, according to his fans, isn't "most developers", but the god of video game developement who can do no wrong, and still 8 billion people bailed out of walking simulator 2.

Most developers don’t hire cameos from every famous person they like

u/BlackKnighting20 Sep 10 '26

Death Stranding 2 sold 2 million, it ain’t good.

I'm not wasting my time with people that think sales are a metric of quality

12

u/misterkhan101 Sep 10 '26

lol grow up dude. They might not be a metric of quality but they're most definitely a metric of whether or not you're gonna get more funding and support

9

u/BlackKnighting20 Sep 10 '26

Sells keep your ship going, no sales, your game sink no matter the quality.

Business as usual.

u/nefarious_jp04x Sep 10 '26

It’s true unfortunately no matter what a lot think. The modern triple a gaming industry is too reliant on profits and expectations that not every series or studio can stay up forever like the old days, it’s just too expensive.

u/Spectrum1523 Sep 10 '26

Sales are not not a metric of quality for art

They are however a metric of if people with money will continue to give you money to make more art

-3

u/Jarvis_Jarvison Sep 10 '26

how many did marathon sell. or concord

1

u/BlackKnighting20 Sep 10 '26

Marathon has 1.5, ain’t looking good for Kojima.

1

u/Disastrous-Drop-7778 Sep 10 '26

Do you think that maybe those games underperforming would make Sony more likely to not want to throw more money into a fire?

1

u/BuggyDClown Sep 10 '26

Exactly. These people all clowned on sony for throwing and losing money on Concord. But now they're all like "oh but you threw money at Concord, why not Kojima too?". So it's worth making fun of them when they lose money on a game and studio you don't like. But if they were to lose money on Kojima whose last two games were not really successful, then that would be fine because you personally like him?
