I swear whoever designed those QTEs absolutely hated Lara Croft on a deep and personal level.

The developer said their strategy was to make Laura suffer constantly so the player felt especially protective of her.

That might be the best case of "doing feminism wrong" I think I've ever seen.

After seeing a tree branch enter Laura’s head going down a river, I think I’ll try to refrain from making any mistakes from this point forward. 😭

That one still haunts me, lol

The way she frantically grabs at it...😬

Yeah, that one was VIVID. Glad I’m not the only person it traumatized.

Wasn't it through the neck?

Unfortunately it had the opposite effect on me. Morbid curiosity took over and made me wonder what other fucked up cutscenes I could get. It was not good for my health.

As someone who used to work in EMS I think it's a good thing.  If you're gonna make a game where you deal out violence, it should carry weight y'know?

Like the guy you just shot in the chest isn't dead. He's suffering from a collapsed lung and weeping in his own shit. You paid for violence, well, here it is

Those Tomb Raider games also angle in on that too a little bit. Most games that let you kill people nobody cares or you're treated as heroic for doing it (or at least 'normal' if you're playing as a soldier).

NuTomb Raider Lara is a historian and fresh explorer. She gets stranded on an island with her friends and coworkers. The inhabitants are extremely hostile. Lara proceeding to go feral and depopulate that island freaks her friends out and drives a wedge between them, and even in the later games Lara being 'off' mentally is used as a plot point.

if you want a good example where constantly killing people makes an impact, spec ops: the like is a great example.

Oh trust me, I totally get it. Love me some violence in video games. I’m just not sure if I’m too keen on that violence being inflicted on me 😭

You should Conan‘s video on YouTube the audience reactions to Lara getting impaled by the branch was crazy!! They all gasped at the same time

I mean, it's fucking gross. Like, snuff film bad. Not even in a campy way like a Saw film.

For me it's just too far. There's scary violence and then there's just depressing. Like that lady that gets absolutely tortured to death by the dinosaurs in Jurassic World. I'm not thrilled, I'm just wincing.

Valid reaction. Yet some violence needs to be shown. Don't be like those that say that every rape seen is unnecessary. Yes it's gross, but it happens.

Lighten up, Francis.

i think there was one scene where she falls down a waterfall or stream, bangs into a bunch of rocks and then gets her torso and legs imapled on a bunch of wood too thats was brutal

1

u/KingGizzle Sep 11 '26

That’s literally the one that popped in my head.

u/andresfgp13 Sep 11 '26

i always believed that it was to set the tone of the game, like this isnt a treasure search with your buddies, you are fighting for your life there.

How is that related to feminism? You are protective of her because she keeps getting her shit kicked in, not because she's a woman.

u/Pol_Potamus Sep 11 '26

Women are required to be women first and people second /s

It certainly gave them one hell of a marketing push, that was the only thing I and a lot of friends ever knew about the game until I finally played last year. Needless to say, I did my utmost to not mess up lol

Well it absolutely worked on me. Knowing you're one missed button press from seeing your main girl get piked through the fucking skull is a powerful motivator.

Honestly is how the Hunger Games books worked as well.

That's a weird take (the developer I mean) - for me it showed the constant level of danger Lara was in and what a badass she was tanking all that cumulative damage.

But yeah it definitely caused damage fatigue in me, like give the woman a break. I think it was around the plane crashing where she was where I just sighed and prepped for QTE.

They got the guy who does mk fatalities or something, idk.

2

u/NateShaw92 Sep 11 '26

Or they were into... some stuff.

2

u/ambatueksplod Sep 11 '26

If anything I think they were jacking off to them.

u/CX316 Sep 11 '26

My mind went straight to the one with the branch through the lower jaw, that where you went too?
