This is why dying in Dragon's Lair never felt that bad because the failures were hilarious.

356

u/Excalitoria Sep 11 '26

Why animate a fail state or create stakes in gameplay when you could just put the controller down and play (watch) the game like that instead?! šŸ˜€

u/Darth_Omnis Sep 11 '26

141

u/Zarvanis-the-2nd Sep 11 '26

It was amusing watching Lets Plays of Mixtape because some people tried to push the boundries and were frustrated by how shallow and railroaded it is, while others barely touched the controller and it played itself most of the time. I saw someone get an achievement for avoiding all obstacles in the shopping cart sequence and they didnt touch the controller once during it. I dont actually have a problem with it essentially being a lightly-interactive movie, but the writing had better be fantastic if you're going to do that (and it wasn't).

53

u/Josephthebear Sep 11 '26

I'll be honest, this game was extremely boring to me to the point where I didn't even finish it. Every little segment felt like a chore. I have no idea how it got so highly reviewed.

7

u/Mexicutioner01 Sep 13 '26

Because game journalist can't play games. A game that plays itself and does everything for them is the perfect game to them.

Fifty cents really meant something in an arcade back then, too. Fuck Dragon's Lair.

17

u/Jackski Sep 11 '26

I can't remember the game but it used to be an absolute nightmare and was so difficult, we were putting so much money in and getting no where. Then the guy who collected the coins turned up and had a key that could control how many continues you had. He just blasted this game for 30 minutes and showed us all the secrets and tricks to do well. Then put it on 99 credits and went "have fun" before leaving. Absolute legend.

The David Cage games were incredible for those long scenes where you could fuck up every QTE for comic effect.

To be fair, the whole point of a game like Quantic Dream or Supermassive is that there are consequences to your actions and lack thereof, up to and including failing the QTE.

12

u/ochgerm Sep 11 '26

Supermassive

Missed a button? Well, that character misses a head now. You won't play with them again.

56

u/DarkPrincessEcsy Sep 11 '26

This is the only time quick time events are acceptable, if failing them causes something hilarious to happen. Could also see the validity of hiding a secret ending behind a failed one. Bonus points if it's the good ending. If you just do QTEs to do them, though, it makes me want to wash my eyes out with bleach and metal shavings

27

u/Actual-Newt-2984 Sep 11 '26

The tomb raider ones were so brutal you didnt want to fail them

57

u/DimitrescuStan Sep 11 '26

That's probably what the QTE autocomplete accessibility option is for. Then you can just put the controller down and watch it like cutscene.

66

u/MazerBakir Sep 11 '26

As an accessibility feature it would be fine but from the reviews it seems that it's the case by default.

71

u/Baofog Sep 11 '26

The accessibility feature just makes the qte auto success happen faster. Even with qte auto complete off there are no fail states for missing them. They just eventually succeed. That succeeding can't be turned off.

51

u/maxdragonxiii Sep 11 '26

this game is rated M, right? why does it needs auto completing QTEs?? are we that brain rotted.

43

u/BaldHenchman02 Sep 11 '26

Considering the mediocre reviews and dislikes it's been getting, not really.

20

u/maxdragonxiii Sep 11 '26

yeah, I cant help but feeling like the game is just being dumbed down a lot because they expect casuals, never touched a controller before, to play this game. sure its great for accessibility, but at this point i'll rather cut QTEs out and make it a cutscene.

Yeah QTE in cutscenes are... not a choice conducive to a good time.

33

u/philip30001 Sep 11 '26

Depends what your going for

The originator re4 had some that people would call unfair but I love the concept of basically a rhythm game while watching a scene in game

Even something simple like timing breathes could help convey something and tell us about the character in interactive ways

Something like god of war having kratos take deep breathes to try to stay calm and the rhythm getting faster and the triggers resisting more to show his struggle keeping a cool head

The example from OP is the worst way to do it tho unless theres something like a loss of health or a harder encounter but I doubt it does have interaction at all since ive heard its a difficulty setting but dont know myself

22

u/Lewa358 Sep 11 '26

I can forgive QTEs if and only if it's reasonable to predict what button will be used. Like if I see the character winding up a punch, and the melee button is square, I can presume that the button in the QTE will be square.

iirc, God of War is good at this and RE4 is bad.

Spider Man obviously has them and they do begin getting slightly heavy handed, but used well and with proper deliberate intention, can really play into the power fantasy of the respective character.

They can also be used well for loading, pacing etc. which is definitely why they are included. But the intention and care needs to be there.

95

u/EdliA Sep 11 '26

Exactly. I feel like Sony the gaming branch has been overtaken by a lot of people that are using it to jump on the movies part of Sony.

22

u/SpiritualAd9102 Sep 11 '26

I feel like it’s been that way for awhile, and not just with Sony. Games that tend to focus on story over game play have been some of the most acclaimed games of the last decade plus.Ā

9

u/Dapper-Restaurant-20 Sep 11 '26

Whenever I hear people talk about all the critically acclaimed games lately it's almost ALWAYS about the story and characters, not a single blurb about the gameplay at all.

8

u/Nicklename Sep 11 '26

I've bought more than a few critically acclaimed games just to realize the gameplay is garbage or the game is too rigid for me to really enjoy. I was all for this game when I thought it would be Wolverine using his super senses to follow and liberate captive mutants while investigating the seedy side of Madripoor. When I learned that it's strictly an on rails adventure game where you're just trying to set up the next cut scene, I was so disappointed. I feel like games have come so far from Super Mario Brothers 1 we maybe don't need a glitzy version of "come here, smash this brick, jump onto this thing, now move forward, wait a 10 count, OK then run until you hit this ledge and now you wait..."

My least favorite game genre is "we didn't have the movie rights so we put in some occasional button mashing and now it's a game"

→ More replies (10)

16

u/yournumberis6 Sep 11 '26

Same, and if you dare say that you'd rather have good gameplay than a good story you'll get downvoted to hell. But yeah I'd rather not know what's going on in the game and have a shitty story if it means I'm going to have a great time.

I figured it was because they ran out of time to create failure cutscenes.

24

u/gjiorkiie Sep 11 '26

We have to shame these bastards into making these qtes actually change something. How far back have these studios gone...even OG RE4 had qte failed states and then 20 years later Capcom innovated them into being real time action (Krauser knife fight) and these people can't even put fail states in their qtes let alone turn them into real time action. They have gone backwards.

8

u/1BruteSquad1 Sep 11 '26

Yah that's the crazy thing. QTEs having fail states isn't some revolution on a cheap gimmick from the past. QTEs had always been fail able or story impactful until recently when certain studios got so lazy they figured no one would notice/care and wanted their movie simulator to run smoothly

22

u/NagsUkulele Sep 11 '26

Insomniac's strategy, as with most other triple a studios nowadays, is to put out a product with the widest appeal possible so you don't miss out on revenue. Make sure an eight year old on Xanax could complete the game because you can't miss out on toothless timmy's $90

That said, this is an extreme accessibility mode for folks who wanna completely avoid QTEs.. So, the OP is a bit disingenuous.

Edit: What a shitshow.. Apparently, QTEs just auto complete no matter.. So my sarcastic joke above is actually true.. lol

80

u/Diligent-Neck6594 Sep 11 '26

Yakuza does QTEs the best. There are maybe like 3 in the entire series that actually fail the game, the rest are an alternate version of the scene where you get your ass kicked.

What's interesting is that both Wolverine and that game don't "penalize" you for missing the QTE, but having an alternate cutscene for failure is what makes a QTE worth it, even if it doesn't mean losing.

I don't mind them removing QTEs or auto-completing QTEs if it's an accessibility feature the player chooses.

Some gamers disabilities that gives them trouble with QTE events.

I believe in Dispatch, you could, as an accessibility option, turn them off and you'd auto-pass every QTE event. I like that option for people.

However, if you're going to keep QTEs in your game, have repercussions for failure to complete it timely!

16

u/not-hardly Sep 11 '26

There's a lot more gamers with disabilities than most people would think.

52

u/Wazula23 Sep 11 '26

There was a video game conference a while back that was using a streamer struggling on where to go in a linear boat scene down the river in the tutorial for God Of War PS4. The point was that even though it was effectively a drift down the river, some gamers may struggle to find their way and that the developers need to account for them, which is dumb. That streamer was DSP btw.

I once did a poll about difficulty asking how many times you would ideally fail before beating a boss in a game. The two most popular answers were 0 and 1, garnering almost two thirds of the vote.

It seems like most gamers essentially want to be a child who was handed an unplugged controller and think they’re beating the game by just mashing whatever.

17

u/abruptusabortis Sep 11 '26

I play a lot of total war and I'm pretty sure that the vast majority of players just reload battles until they win. It really seems like a lot of gamers don't want any negative outcomes when they play

u/CyberTyrantX1 Sep 11 '26

I really just can’t believe how insulting this is. Insomniac wanted to make a game for adults but used it as an opportunity to treat adults like babies.

83

u/McFlyyouBojo Sep 11 '26

Ive read somewhere that someone at Insomniac said it was Sony's request to dumb things down

118

u/Correct_Gift_9479 Sep 11 '26

Incorrect. I made a good thread under the PS5 subreddit for the game reviews on this subreddit about the development for this game.

Sony echoed current player sentiment, such as viewing the tall grass and detective mode stealth as too derivative, and overutilized. Sony shared helpful feedback to Insomniac but those features still landed into the final game.

Insomniac chose to cut their own ideas, such as claws being controlled by left and right trigger with half pressure and full pressure creating alternate combos, destructable environments (reworked to crates/small breakables), throwing back shurikens lodged in you at the enemy (reworked into a finisher animation), jean gameplay (this was prototyped) and more. Marvel forced them to constantly rewrite the story, but Sony echoed good advice.

86

u/say_Christ_IsLord Sep 11 '26

Claws controlled by triggers sounds so cool, can't believe they cut that down, incredibly unwise

44

u/FondantCritical8017 Sep 11 '26

apparently I read it was changed for "accessibilty", which kind of represents as whole the misguided direction the game took

23

u/say_Christ_IsLord Sep 11 '26

They were cowards after all

14

u/driving_andflying Sep 11 '26

They were cowards after all

Agreed. That's the thing that studios and devs don't seem to understand now: You can't make a game that pleases everyone. And the more they try, the worse it gets.

I had such high hopes for Wolverine.

Ever since Insomniac was bought out by Sony, their games have been so subpar and lazy. They reached such heights with the first PS4 Spider-Man that they'll never reach again.

So disappointed to see what the studio has become. I have no hope for Spider-Man 3.

As soon as I saw gameplay, I thought Oh no. This went from a game I was kind of bummed I don't have a PS5 to play it to even if it comes to PC, I'm waiting for it to be under 50$

23

u/TheBiggestDook Sep 11 '26

Have a hard time getting me for more than 30

21

u/AncientSignature1505 Sep 11 '26

Honestly, if this is indicative of the rest of the game, I'll watch a YouTube playthrough and call it a day.

Watching the clip, that QTE was sloooooooow as hell. Why make it that slow? Nearly impossible to miss unless you intentionally fail it like the person in the clip.

8

u/SoyBoy67 Sep 11 '26

Really takes the Q out of the QTE

Don't worry, there are plenty of other good reasons to not play this game.

Imo, QTEs should reward you for completing them. Hurt/cripple an enemy if you succeed, or hurt/cripple you if you fail. Like, a boss having more health or powerful attacks if you fail.

Insane blue smoke guide + can't fail QTE... oh boy. The 61IQ modern gamers are gonna love this!

This is the equivalent of Netflix designing their shows with audience being on their phones and not paying attention.

30

u/Naterttotsart Sep 11 '26

I will say, after seeing the general discourse of shows like Lanterns and movies like The Odyssey, I totally get why Netflix thinks they need to write shows with insane exposition. People are fucking morons.

People don't comprehend the things that they're directly looking at.

32

u/confusing_roundabout Sep 11 '26

But they still shouldn't write for those people. Let them be morons. Them being morons means they at least think more about the show and engage with it on a deeper level than just "that was entertaining".

I've seen some real dumb fan theories on the Lanterns subreddit but at least those people are engaged enough with the show to come up with dumb contradictory theories.

u/Vichnaiev Sep 11 '26

QTEs are lame regardless if the game auto-completes or not. If you want a quick cutscene during combat, just do it, there's no reason to pretend there's an actual interaction.

I love the God of War series and their combat, but I still think it would be WAY better without them.

30

u/Bhibhhjis123 Sep 11 '26

I really like them when they’re done well, but it’s rare. You should have to do something to earn them, they should allow you to interact with an enemy in a unique way, they shouldn’t significantly interrupt the flow of battle, and they should be cool as hell.

No more ā€œpress 7 buttons to parkour in slow motionā€.

18

u/forest-fairyx Sep 11 '26

Until Dawn did a great job with them imo. Characters would die if you missed one and QTE’s were used for the quicker but riskier routes. There’s one section of the game where you can chose between safe and risky patches and if you don’t chose the QTE’s and get them all right it causes another character to die because you were too slow to save them and anytime a character dies it changes how the story continues to play out.

Being rewarded for doing QTE’s while also having consequences if you mess up adds to the tension I think but just adding them into a running action scene is fairly boring and their inclusion doesn’t change or add to the story at all, you could remove all QTE’s and the same cutscene could play out.

This is what happens when accessibility becomes the top priority. The challenge of the game has been focus-grouped to death. I had the same issue with the new 007 game. All of these assists should be an option, not the default.

25

u/Wazula23 Sep 11 '26

Seems AAA games are hard segregating into camps of Soulslike go fuck yourself difficulty, and playable movies you couldnt fail if you wanted to.

18

u/HowManyMeeses Sep 11 '26

Accessibility for people who need it is fantastic. Games offering things like color-blind settings or arachnophobia settings are great.

I don't think this is an accessibility issue. It's game developers not wanting players to feel any level of discomfort, which is how MCU movies also function.

It’s like the Marvel films, it’s only in some of the last few films(Thunderbolts and Spider-Man 4)that they’ve stopped pandering to the idiots in test screenings and they’ve been some of the best in years.

Naughty Dog goes above and beyond with having all possible acessability settings and then some and even they put them toggleable, TLOU 2 did it perfectly.

9

u/Toilet_Bomber Sep 11 '26

Similar with DOOM: The Dark Ages. You can make the game as fast or as slow as you want, triple or half the health of enemies, make parry windows slow down time or not. It's great, since I found Nightmare difficulty too easy initially. Made the game 130% faster and it was perfect.

8

u/narf_hots Sep 11 '26

This is nothing new. There's a whole genre of game that is exactly like this. What's that game again where they got a bunch of young-ish actors and had you play a Friday the 13th type story from their perspectives? All you do is quick time events and you can fail every single one of them without changing the story.

7

u/Sillet_Mignon Sep 12 '26

The story changes every time someone dies bc a qte failure. Have you even played until dawn?

I have never understood why anyone likes game play like this. Just the most boring and uninteresting way to have combat.

15

u/RogueMallShinobi Sep 11 '26

Aside from that one silly game they made that is 100% QuickTime events, it’s not really meant to be a gameplay mechanic, it’s more like a cinematic mechanic that keeps you more locked in/invested during non-gameplay moments.

Why are there quicktime events in the first place? I thought games evolved past that garbage.

30

u/UnfazedReality463 Sep 11 '26

Can’t really call them quick time events because you don’t need to be quick to complete the event.

It’s just an event.

12

u/FatsBoombottom Sep 11 '26

"Normal Time Event" doesn't have that ring to it.

57

u/post-buttwave Sep 11 '26

And this definitely isn't a case where someone set the QuickTime events to automatically be completed in the accessibility settings?

57

u/TheFergPunk Sep 11 '26

Nope this is the setting turned off (which is default). If you turn autocomplete on the slow down and icon dissappear. Its impossible to fail a QTE.

48

u/post-buttwave Sep 11 '26

Wow. That's...why even have them?
