I remember telling people how cool and realistic it was that if you wanted to cross a body of water you damned well sit at the pier and wait for the boat/raft or start increasing your swimming skill, none of this fast travel nonsense! They usually looked at me like I was the one talking nonsense lol.
How many times I accidentally hit attack instead of hail to trainer NPC's and got one shotted, hugging the walls of the frozen tundra trying to figure out my way around and stumbling right into an ice giant for the first time and being scared shitless, accidentally fucking with Tundra Jack or the absolute terror of traversing kithicor forest at night while severely under leveled. Ahh the good old days.
I honestly think the missing factor in MMORPG's for a very long time now is fear. There's no high level MOB's wandering low level zones to keep an eye out for or you are done. No random possibilities that could just happen and completely fuck your day up, stuff like that is what I miss about Old School MMO's now we have massive online games that are clearly that: "GAMES" not online worlds to simply exist in and try to maintain some level of realism. I feel bad for any gamer who never got to experience the early days of MMO's before they became overly codified and casualized.
I remember looking at a map like the actual physical map that came with the game to try to figure out how to get myself as a brand new wood elf ranger across to Freeport to meet a friend who started as a dark elf.
I met some totally random stranger organically who was also looking to go the same way and we decided to run together just for the company. We ended up lost in lesser faydark because I didn't know how zone connections worked and some roleplaying dwarf guy who was probably only like level 30 but seemed like a God to me was kind enough to lead us out of LF and to the butcherblock docks.
I've been playing EQ legends and it's fine and all but it isn't the same and nothing ever will be.
