Diablo 2

u/Internet_employee 29d ago
You young whippersnappers and your Diablo 2, never feeling that terrifying horror of opening the door into The Butcher’s room on the second level.
21
u/Kutekegaard 29d ago
Fresh meat! Queue the lag spike that happens when the door opens and he slaughters the player.

I was 8, with some earplugs, in the night, on the computer, without anyone knowing.
After encountering the butcher I gasped, shat down the PC, went to bed, and that was the last time I sneaked on the PC to play Diablo lol.

u/AlwaysSpeakTruth 28d ago
Diablo had such an awesome ambiance to it, going lower and lower into the dungeon. Anyone remember this?:
"I can see what you see not.
Vision milky, then eyes rot.
When you turn they will be gone,
Whispering their hidden song.
Then you see what cannot be,
Shadows move where light should be.
Out of darkness, out of mind,
Cast down into the Halls of the Blind."→ More replies (2)5

For those wanting to listen to the Tristram village music to bring back memories: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnMR6SOBa9k
It's one of those pieces that will forever remind me of the long nights spent in utter bliss and that feeling of carefreeness that only a teenager can experience.

For years I thought the Terran Dropship said: “In the butt! Bye bye bye!”
Thirty years later I learn it’s “In the pipe! Five by five” and apparently a reference to Aliens, which I have not seen

We need this guy to do an AMA now, wherever he is. I want to know if that valve knob is still on his eye.

Iirc, Valve just picked out random men on the streets to do the faces. I don't know if they're even identified.

OG Baldur's gate. Huddled around the computer, making sure we could hear Khaleid jump everything we clicked on him, and Jaheira's oh so snarky responses. And Minsk. Always Minsk.
Edit: I'm so glad all yall know what I'm talking about. I heard each one of those lines in my head. I remembered one of my faves: when you click on Jaheira and she goes "Yes, oh omnipresent authority figure?"

The first piece of hardware I ever bought for myself when I got my first paycheck in highschool was a Sound Blaster card with EAX and surround sound support (and i think these were the front speakers!) so I could play Half Life with EAX and surround sound on. I remember playing TFC and you could actually hear people running up behind you.

Yes! My first gaming PC was in 1998. Pentium 3 933. 16MB ram, GeForce 2 GTS. First game I played was Half-Life. Quake 3 arena came out and that GTS didn't quite cut it so I upgraded to 32MB ram and a GeForce 3 Ti and man it was butter at 1280x1024. Played all the half life expansions, Blue Shift, Opposing Force. God I loved those games. Then HL2 came out and it was a slideshow on that system. Fun thing is my simple Lenovo work laptop with integrated graphics will play HL2 on ultra with everything at max and gets like 100+ frames. How technology progresses.
