You young whippersnappers and your Diablo 2, never feeling that terrifying horror of opening the door into The Butcher’s room on the second level.

Fresh meat! Queue the lag spike that happens when the door opens and he slaughters the player.

1st time playing multiplayer on a 56k modem. I head down to the 2nd level to follow my friend. I spawn into the bottom of the stairwell to see my friend running towards the stairs and then disappears on his way up to level 1.

Right on his heels comes the Butcher to trap me against a wall and hack me to fucking pieces.

10 yr old me was furious. And fuck you Andrew and your bitch made stairs!

I was 8, with some earplugs, in the night, on the computer, without anyone knowing.

After encountering the butcher I gasped, shat down the PC, went to bed, and that was the last time I sneaked on the PC to play Diablo lol.

Not sure if "shat down" was a typo, but intentional or not, that pretty much perfectly describes encountering the butcher for the first time.

Diablo had such an awesome ambiance to it, going lower and lower into the dungeon. Anyone remember this?:

"I can see what you see not.
Vision milky, then eyes rot.
When you turn they will be gone,
Whispering their hidden song.
Then you see what cannot be,
Shadows move where light should be.
Out of darkness, out of mind,
Cast down into the Halls of the Blind."

Can still quote that word for word. The later games may be better games, but nothing had the ambiance like the first game

That first game has a special place in my nostalgia center.

Well, is there actually anyone that played D2 without playing the original?

I was there. I was there long before Diablo 1.

Commander Keen?

Oh I remember commander Keen. It had SOUNDS and good graphics.

I was born just in time to learn to get used to DOS 1.0 when i was a little kid. So I saw games starting from the old chess games on monochrome monitors and moving forward to today.

I loves me some Diablo, but after going back to play the og and still playing D2, I gotta say 2 is da GOAT.

The Butcher was scary in Diablo 2 too, lol

Oh man. My dad bought Diablo when it first came out and sat me down to play with him. The butchers voice still haunts my dreams and it has been 30 years

The cleaver was pretty handy though.

I played through the warlock on d2 recently, and the flamey demon guy right before diablo dropped the stone of jordan. I was kinda flabbergasted. Never, in the entire time i ever played either of those games did I ever see one of those drop. I'm pretty sure every SOJ i ever saw was a dupe
