Alien Earth was received well in the first half of the season but fell off a lot in its ratings by the second half as people argued the story got worse.
Legion had 3 strong seasons, although S2 was below S1 and S3 in ratings.
It arguably became what horror films have made characters since the beginning “don’t go in there”’s so instead of trash it just followed the natural progression
Just like anything beginning with Far Cry 2 is already piggybacking off the I.P. to have the story/gameplay they want with zero relation to the actual Far Cry.
Its also an ego trip. Writers and showrunners like to change the lore of established IP so they can say they created something that became popular as if they were the ones who created the entire thing in the first place. They arent "adapting for modern audiences" they're just hacks with inflated egos who happened to know somebody who knows somebody up high enough to at the studio to land them a job.
Anytime you see an interview with a showrunner saying "we wanted to adopt the franchise for modern audiences" or "we wanted to put our own spin and tell our own stories.." you're really just witnessing codewords for "we are untalented nepobabies who couldn't worldbuild from scratch to save our lives and the studios love making money with an already established IP, so here we are."
(Speaking about Star Trek and Kurtzman's goons here as just one example) It's kinda odd that someone who has only directed a commercial or idiotic short film nobody likes is given the reigns to a 60 year old sci-fi franchise that's generated billions of dollars over the years, dontcha think?
You could go onto fanfiction.net, put a blindfold on and still manage to pick out a better story than 99.999% of what these hollyweird goblins manage to come up with. George Carlin was right...it's a big club and we ain't in it.
Same thing they've been doing ever since Far Cry 2.
Far Cry games had no relation to Far Cry for the longest time now.
The name's based on Crytek, which left after the first game.
No recurring characters except some vague hints of the Jackal allegedly being Jack Carver, despite the two being nothing alike.
No parts of the original story have any influence on the sequels.
Very different gameplay. Far Cry was linear with no open-world activities.
They basically just went: "We have this Far Cry I.P. right lying around, might as well use it".
And make their own IP. All of the non-game Sonic film characters (like Agent Stone) are Paramount owned, for example, not Sega. The more a studio deviates, the more they own wholly.
What is worse is, when you have the director who just HAAAAS to try to make it their own. Which is usually the case.
I can not stand that. You wanna do your own thing that is great. Just do something new. But they can't because they don't have the creativity and the courage to do something new so they try to work within the security of an established IP but the reality is that won't save their bitchmade lack of creativity and they always end up ruining the IP. EVERY SINGLE TIME.
These adaptations are never made by anyone who is passionate about the source material. EVER. And that is so clearly the case here because anyone who can say that about one of the coolest and funnest stories in gaming and one of the greatest villian performances in gaming is not passionate about the medium or this specific franchise.
Watch something from Hawley, then say he's not creative, my friend! True, he's starting with established IPs, but takes them in very unexpected directions, and does it well.
EH he has done some things I like. I will give him that.
HOWEVER... he clearly has no respect for video games as a story telling medium if he can say some dumb shit like that.
The irony is, video games have been a serious story telling medium for a long ass time now. And in some regards the best story telling medium. It is one thing to watch a characters story. But to experience it directly is a different component TV and movies will never have.
I’ll say this as a rabid Aliens fan of some 40 years, I don’t actually mind Hawley’s Alien Earth.
Much like his Fargo and Legion series, I look at it in much the same way as I view a lot of remixes in music. The best ones have taken some of the original elements and created something different and interesting.
The RE movie seems like the director didn’t want to do it but he was forced to by the studio in exchange for approving the movie he really wants to make.

So that they can milk the ip
