Bro chose the “gamers skip cutscenes” argument for one of the few games where you can’t skip the cutscenes 😂

219

u/CosmicJackalop 21d ago

Not only do several of the games if not all not allow you to skip cut scenes, it's one of the worst game IPs to make this argument. Far Cry always put a lot of effort into the story and characters through cut scenes

I barely liked Alien Earth and can only imagine how bad this will be, I'm frankly amazed he's been trusted with another IP

57

u/FlyingStealthPotato 21d ago

For real. Far Cry actually has pretty good stories and always has excellent scenes. Shit, Far Cry 3 has I’d say a top 5-10 scene in the history of gaming. It’s a sandbox and it doesn’t take itself that awful seriously, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a good story.

14

u/Jaxonhunter227 21d ago

And it's a story that could have benefited from being adapted as a TV show, mainly because we never get to see Jason's face in the cutscenes, that alone would have added a lot, but it's also just a story that would work really well as a TV show

u/ThingYea 21d ago

They did make a short YouTube series with Vaas that was awesome

I didn't you were prevented from skipping cutscenes, because I never tried.

Far Cry 3 is a fan favorite specifically because of the story arc. Starts with college roomies on a vacation in paradise. Turns into a horror flick when some get abducted and others murdered. Enter one of the best villains of all time. The protagonist is just a frat bro at first, and only takes a pirate life as a final act of desperation. He is absolutely sickened by what he was forced to do. Then over time, through training from the local tribe and more acts of desperation, he becomes really good at killing. He starts to enjoy stalking his human prey. Which tees up the redemption arc and final choice. Do you stay on the island having fulling succumbed to the darkness in you that enjoys hunting humans, or do you leave with the people you rescued and begin putting it all behind you?

The story arc was nearly perfect. I can understand fleshing out some of the main characters and adding more of them. But the overall arc would make for an excellent season of TV. Especially if you end it at the crossroads choice, and leave it up to the viewer to decide if Jason leaves or stays.

Yep

WTAF? Pardon the language, but a main point of Far Cry is they "force" you to live the uncomfortable stuff. No skipping, no turning your head away...

I really "love" when showrunners did not even take a cursory look at the original media. Look at how "successful" was Halo TV show for example, or Star Trek X: Nemesis.

Why do people make adaptations of things they don’t care for?

808

u/hereforpewdiephy 21d ago

So that they can milk the ip

225

u/Turbulent_Set8884 21d ago

And turn it into something they want they know won't get attention unless it had the name of something already established

20

u/Sempere 21d ago

Noah Hawley can get whatever he want made and marketed at FX.

Fargo. Legion. Alien: Earth.

14

u/CappnMidgetSlappr 20d ago

Alien: Earth is exactly why dude should not have free reign.

That show was hot garbage.

There are piggy backing off the IP to tell a story they want. Good thing FarCry isn't far off of cheap Hollywood action films

Its also an ego trip. Writers and showrunners like to change the lore of established IP so they can say they created something that became popular as if they were the ones who created the entire thing in the first place. They arent "adapting for modern audiences" they're just hacks with inflated egos who happened to know somebody who knows somebody up high enough to at the studio to land them a job.

Anytime you see an interview with a showrunner saying "we wanted to adopt the franchise for modern audiences" or "we wanted to put our own spin and tell our own stories.." you're really just witnessing codewords for "we are untalented nepobabies who couldn't worldbuild from scratch to save our lives and the studios love making money with an already established IP, so here we are."

(Speaking about Star Trek and Kurtzman's goons here as just one example) It's kinda odd that someone who has only directed a commercial or idiotic short film nobody likes is given the reigns to a 60 year old sci-fi franchise that's generated billions of dollars over the years, dontcha think?

You could go onto fanfiction.net, put a blindfold on and still manage to pick out a better story than 99.999% of what these hollyweird goblins manage to come up with. George Carlin was right...it's a big club and we ain't in it.

u/crustyrobots 21d ago

Imagine milking the IP by keeping the cow well fed with actually good stories and care for the property

money

the better question is why they are given permission to do so in the first place

110

u/SmolishPPman 21d ago

Same reason. Money

49

u/SeahorseSix 21d ago

But it should be understood by the IP holder that a director that puts their identity of directing above the identity of the IP is a bad bet to make. Look at the Halo TV show for an example.

Then look at The Last of Us, specifically season 1. It had the creative director of the game directly involved, and the narrative was fantastic. Made loads, and put actors on the mainstream map like Bella Ramsey. Look at Fallout for the same setup.

The only Ubisoft people attached to this project are executives that are acting as producers. They are not learning from what has been successful in the video game adaptation space. Best of luck to them.

And this is how people like Uwe Boll manage to get the rights to make slop based on games, including this adaption of the first game back in 2008...

6

u/Few-Improvement-5655 21d ago

And in both cases it's REALLY short sighted money. Look at how Sonic, after listening to fans, and have a creative team that is passionate about the series, has been well regarded and made tons of money. They could have franchises like that, instead they want to push out a bunch of poorly received products that might maybe make their money back when if they did a good job they could milk it for way way longer.

It’s becoming a terrible trend in video game adaptions. No respect for the source material. They just the IP as a vehicle for their own shitty story.

21

Hey now, the Super Mario movie is a certified masterpiece.

Fallout has done a great job of having a unique storyline while still capturing the feel a d world of the games

That’s because it’s produced by Toss Howard and directed by Johnathan Nolan. It has the literal (current) god of Fallout as an executive producer

They don’t want to make a Far Cry show. They want to make their own show, but companies want established IP’s. So they sign on to make this or Halo or whatever, then just disregard the source material because they didn’t want to do that story anyways.

5

u/ReivynNox 21d ago

Ironically in a way that is the most Far Cry thing about it all, because that's basically what the series was built on after Crytek left.

They didn't want to do a Far Cry game, they just wanted the Far Cry audience.

Because the OG game's writing & directing was done by others, and these people what to write and direct their own shit so they get credit for writing/directing instead of the OG writers.

→ More replies (1)

10

u/Tiernoch 21d ago

Generally it falls into two camps.

They couldn't get anyone to bankroll what they wanted to make, so they sign on to a project the studio doesn't care about and just make what they wanted in the first place.

The studio or director just had a script lying around that they slapped Far Cry on so they can spend as little money as possible.

8

u/yeaman1111 21d ago

Option 1: Wallow in despair as their shitty original script languishes in oblivion as the studio execes demand pre-built fanbases. Come to terms with your lack of talent and dedicate yourself to adapting something that is already good, in a faithful matter.

Opinion 2: Find (any) moderately succesful IP, rip out its intestines, stuff it with your shitty original script with the names filed off, and use it as a skin suit with which to dance in front of the exec and mesmerize them.

These hacks know which option they're taking.

9

u/Emperor-Pizza 21d ago

I remember an interview from some author discussing this in regards to adaptations. I don't remember who it was, might have been Brandon Sanderson but don't quote me on that though.

It basically went that a lot of these writers simply can't get any studios behind them for the stories they want to tell based on their own ideas. So they audition for adaptations with built in fan base which is seen as a safer bet by Hollywood & then they repackage them into the story they want to tell instead.

Doesn't every video game into movie adaptation basically always fail BECAUSE They dont get the story right? Braindead take for sure.

11

u/VoiceofKane 21d ago

No, they fail because they're bad. The best episode of The Last of Us was an original story that only tangentially related to the game. Cregger's Resident Evil movie has very little to do with the game series. The Fallout series uses the world of the games to tell an entirely new story. Diverting from the games is one of the best choices an adaptation can make, if it's done well.

40

u/GuiltyGlow 21d ago

It's honestly hilarious how predictable it is at this point. Until Hollywood stops looking down on gaming as an entertainment medium, this won't change.

9

u/edman9677 21d ago

It’s funny because the recent successes in gaming movie/tv adaptations is because they respected the source material. Fallout might be its own story but it exists in the same world as the games. Still respecting what came before. Halo failed spectacularly because it looked down on what the games had for a story. The Witcher failed because it didn’t respect either the games or the books. Even the Sonic movies respect what the games created which is why they’re so successful.

Why do they keep getting directors that still think of game storytelling like it haven’t evolved past 1980

u/JinkoTheMan 21d ago

Try being a Supergirl fan. The Supergirl movie that came out this year was based on one of Supergirl’s best comic runs and the writer and director butchered it. The writer was someone who had zero experience writing full length movies. 🫩

Far Cry is a perfect example of a game IP translating well into other media like TV, all the games have no relation to each other apart from some characters, perfect for an anthology or an adaptation that can stand on its own like the Fallout TV series

What? Ahahahah I presume he ain't a gamer. Sure, there are games that allow you to skip cutscenes and people that skip them constantly, but I would say for sure that most gamers don't skip them, unless they've played them already (or the game story is boring and bland)

What...in the fuck did i just read? Are you serious? The narrative/characters of these games have been like the only consistently great things about them, and i say that as a huge Far Cry Fan. The story in these games is so fucking good that it literally propelled Michael Mando into mainstream stardom and he himself knows this and has acknowledged it multiple times. Even Far Cry 6 which is WIDELY hated even by the fanbase (i personally thought it was okay) has a great story and fantastic voice acting. You couldn't have picked a worse mindset for the director of a Far Cry show if you tried

31

u/ProcessTrust856 21d ago

People who skip cutscenes are incomprehensible to me. If I’m skipping cut scenes, it’s because I don’t like the game and I usually stop playing it.

The first NBA2k with the cutscenes in Career Mode was the exception. That shit was so bad.

8

u/Green_Odin 21d ago

I feel like gaming would have a better rep in art spaces if it became the norm for cutscenes to only be skippable once the game has been cleared for the first time.

Otherwise ppl like my younger brother and his mates all just skip every cutscene in every game they play then whine unendingly about how they dont know what to do next or understand whats going on, which is also why we end up with games like wolverine having mandatory stink trails or every console game character voicing what to do next every 30 seconds.

Literally every Far Cry game has a completely different setting, story, & characters with zero interconnection, so him doing an original story shouldn't be an issue with anyone. He's not wrong in saying a lot of people skip cutscenes, because it happens so much that nearly every AAA game released in the last 5 years gives you the option to by default. Lastly, he made Fargo, Alien: Earth, and Legion, so I'm not sure why anyone's talking about this guy like he's some idiot hack.

Yeah I promise that Noah Hawley is better at storytelling than anyone commenting online. Absolutely 0 of us are better than him at this.

Give him the pieces of a franchise and let him do whatever he wants with it. It’s like if Grant Morrison or Alan Moore said they want to take a stab at any franchise. You don’t question it, you just say yes.

7

u/TheRagingElf01 21d ago

They learned a lesson from Fallout.Trying tk make 1 to 1 remake is a death wish because fans will always find something to bitch about. You look at the Mass Effect show just picking the gender of Shep will make people pissed off let alone what do you do with Wrex, what decision you make for Virmire or who you romance. Fans will complain.

You are better off making your own story away from the games but set in the world.

11

u/APlayerHater 20d ago

Learned their lesson with fallout? Fallout was a successful and highly popular show. Look at something like Halo, where they went in their own direction, and see how much success abandoning the source material gets you.

4

u/abject_cynic 20d ago

Fallout works because it respects the source material. Halo didn't work because it didn't respect the source material. It's the same reason the FOX-Men movies are garbage, while the MCU flourished. "Telling their own story" and ignoring the game is how these types of projects fail every single time.

So by your own admission this Far Cry show is a waste of time and money. Since gamers won't watch it because they don't care about story.

6

u/DJteejay04 21d ago

Sounds like someone skipped all the cutscenes and doesn’t know the story he’s adapting

6

u/Nanocon101 21d ago

Oh great, another showrunner adapting a medium he doesn't understand.

u/Marlowe126 21d ago edited 21d ago

Fire this man!

But seriously, what a late 90's-early 2000's way of thinking about something like this. This just sounds like an excuse to ignore any and all source material and do his own thing. It's like he didn't pay attention to what happened to the Resident Evil movies or the Halo show, and ignored the successes of Fallout, Edgerunners, Castlevania, TLOS(season 1 anyway), etc. These days, people will ask fans of a franchise whether these things are worth investing time into watching, since everyone has more and more choices of content with less time to watch them all.

5

u/Playing_One_Handed 21d ago

TV shows also have a skip button. Ill be skipping this for sure

6

u/No-Lobster-8012 21d ago

Who the fuck is this moron?? And more importantly, who put him in charge of a video game adaptation??

7

u/ThisIsATracka 21d ago

So, that guy doesn't play video games then. Gotcha.

7

u/L3v1tje 21d ago

If no one cares about cutscenes/stories in games, then why are they still around? Surely yhe devs would save a boatload of cash by not making those. Its almost as if a grand part of players actually care about this stuff.

I can't remember a game where I skipped cutscenes on the first run of the game. Or the first 5. The only time I would skip a cutscene is when I have been replaying a game so many time, and a cutscene is so annoying, that I couldn't stomach watching it again. Like the intro ride to Helgen in Skyrim, except it is not skippable :)

How tf do these people get greenlit and then say stupid shit like this and still continue to make it.

6

u/madpoke 21d ago

then how is it a FarCry series?

15

u/VOIDofSin 21d ago

Wow, this might go down as the worst video game adaptation of all time.

10

u/DFQreactions 21d ago

oh cool, so i can safely skip his entire show then since theres no gameplay? What fucking stupid logic.

14

u/dirtymurt 21d ago

Just do an adaption of far cry 3 and cast the same VAS actor. Instant hit

8

u/b0sanac 21d ago

Literally all they have to do. But I bet they will fuck it up.

Bro has no misses as a show runner so I trust him. But how is it an adaption if it’s not based on any far cry games?

5

u/TheFizzledamnsizzle 21d ago

Why they keep selecting these people? Just why?

4

u/dbe14 21d ago

Or, and bear with me here, sometimes people play games and enjoy the story as well as the gameplay. Call me crazy.

5

u/brokendream78 21d ago

Thanks for the heads up, this will be an easy show to skip.

5

u/ThisIsKing18 21d ago

Just casual gamer like this tv showrunner will skip the cutscene, real gamer never do that

4

u/3d1thF1nch 21d ago

They never, ever learn.

6

u/spartacus7173 21d ago

Oh another director totally ignoring the source material, this always goes so well.

5

u/Solid_Ad_3776 21d ago

It doesn't need to adapt any story but 1. Stfu And 2. What MAKES Far cry...Far Cry? What will make THIS a Far Cry show that will make players of the games WANT to watch it

5

u/RoseBeach123 21d ago

Yet another showrunner who views a beloved IP with nothing less than utter disdain and condescension. No doubt thinking that HIS adaptation will be above this sort of drivel and he’ll show people how superior his vision is.

5

u/Lebhleb 21d ago

Did i ever tell you the definition of insanity?

6

u/Taineq 21d ago

The skipping happens on the subsequent play-throughs not the first run.

6

u/AdFlat1014 21d ago

People skips story part… so I am making a full new story but they will totally look at mine!!!

12

u/arkens89 21d ago

Do they always pick the biggest dumbass in the room? Or do they just flip a coin or smth

7

u/BotherResponsible378 21d ago

What an idiot. I've never skipped a cutscene in my life unless I've already seen it at least once.

9

u/King-Andy 21d ago

Guys a fucking idiot

4

u/WesternKey2301 21d ago

This show is so doomed. It's gonna have the FarCry name but none of its charm

5

u/tokishoki 21d ago

This should give enough justification that this will be another Halo TV series where showrunners think their version of the IP is better and the show ends up being trash.

3

u/MongolianDonutKhan 21d ago

An original story for a Far Cry movie sounds fine, but dogshit opinions like this bodes ill. Not respecting the source material is bad enough though not a dealbreaker, but the disrespecting the medium is another level. As far as I know, Verhoeven likes books despite not being a fan of the novel Starship Troopers.

u/Promature 21d ago

Yet another example of the lowest common denominator influencing the quality and content of products for everyone.

5

u/MatejMadar 21d ago

Then why are you making a series about it?

4

u/The_CMYK_Avenger 21d ago

I'm not surprised that a guy who wrote what he writes is saying dumb shit like this.

4

u/Musama-The-Slim 21d ago

Translation "I haven't played a game since I was a kid and have no knowledge of video games, their audiences or the industry. Also I'm a fuckwit"

4

u/Personal-Web729 21d ago

That guy is an idiot! The cutscenes in Far Cry were my favorite part of the game

4

u/Axxxem 21d ago

I'm gonna walk into a movie studio and talk aboug how much i fucking hate videogames and how gamers are all a bunch of unemployed losers, hopefully they'll give me the film rights for RDR2

3

u/SmegmaSlurper1996 21d ago

hell yeah that works so well with The Witcher & Halo

5

u/DetectiveChmpionFace 21d ago

Yeah because if theres one thing that makes games fun, its not knowing what or why you're actually playing it. Final fantasy would be so much better without the words or cinematics.

/S

3

u/Nairbnotsew 21d ago

What a head ass take. Sounds like he skips all the cutscenes and assumes everyone else does as well

4

u/Idfk_1 21d ago

Guy never met a gamer before

4

u/Big-Discipline2039 21d ago

So he thinks game stories aren’t important because you can skip cut scenes?

Ok well now he has convinced me to skip his show.

5

u/jkhunter2000 21d ago

This narrative that people skip cutscenes needs to stop. Just say your catering to brainrot tiktok audiences and be done. Stop trying to formulate this narrative that gamers dont like games

3

u/teunteunteun 21d ago

This has to be ragebait

4

u/declandrury 21d ago

Why do they always insist on hiring stupid directors that know nothing about the gaming industry or gamers as a whole?

5

u/ElysiumXIII 21d ago

Yes the series SPECIFICALLY known for great cutscenes and great villains.

4

u/Terrible_Life5040 21d ago

What a moron

4

u/Lord_Jashin 21d ago

Why give this guy Far Cry if he doesn't give a damn about Far Cry? What a fuckin idiot

4

u/Molten_Plastic_ 21d ago

Every. Single. Time.

The conspiracy theorist in me thinks they say these things to rile up the fans for engagement.

3

u/Lorithias 21d ago

I feel like Uwe Bolle lesson wasn’t t enough…

3

u/No-Habit-1568 21d ago

Didn’t they expressly REWARD you in Far Cry 4 for politely waiting for Pagan Min for 10 whole minutes with a fun ending?

Sure it’s not a cutscene, but clearly a value is out on patience haha

4

u/DarwinGoneWild 21d ago

Sounds like the show is gonna be skippable too.

4

u/xDeathRender 21d ago

Bonkers to have a story with fucking Vaas in it and talk about the human drama being irrelevant.

4

u/Pristine-Budget9171 21d ago

This statement reminds me of the guy who’s was supposed to direct the Splinter Cell movie. In which he called it a first person shooter, and there isn’t much story to enjoy. Like why make the movie if you know nothing about the games.

3

u/VladDHell 21d ago

That’s got to be rage baiting

4

u/Masta0nion 21d ago

How do these people land these gigs

5

u/ViC_tOr42 21d ago

What a dumb take holy shit

4

u/RaidriConchobair 21d ago

Is this the apprentice of Uwe Boll or something?

4

u/redtiger288 21d ago

Who are these people they find to make shows? Does he realize you couldn't even skip in the early titles? Does he understand one of the biggest copy pastas came from a Far Cry 3 cutscene???

5

u/ThatVarkYouKnow 21d ago

Did I ever tell you the definition of insanity when it comes to adapting certain media?

4

u/Holiday-Bat6782 21d ago

Remember when they tried to make Sonic look human? Pepperidge Farm remembers

3

u/MoonsterGoopter 21d ago

Man. Noah Hawley wrote Se1 and Se2 of Fargo, two of my favorite seasons of television. And then he mucked it up with Alien: Earth.

On the one hand, I've already seen the FarCry games stories (because I paid attention to the story when I played them and really enjoyed them...) so it would be cool to see a new story. And I get it, as a writer, you probably want to write your own stuff. I'm not against a writer exploring an IP through their own creative lens.

On the other hand, we'll know why the show fails if it does.
