Discussion / Question After the release of Belmont’s Souls, do you think an open world Castlevania would still feel like Castlevania?

A castlevania game doesn't need to be open world, but maybe a collection of open areas. We need another 3d castlevania game first and foremost.

No, it's fine the way it is. Not everything needs to be open world.

I think, Dark Souls 1 was what I would have expected from a 3D Castlevania map wise. Otherwise, the map structure (semi-open with backtracking) is a fundamental aspect of a metroidvania.

However, Supraland did the 3D-metroidvania surprisingly well.

Just stop with this meme already about what "feels like a Castlevania game"

First off Belmont's Curse is an awesome Castlevania game and it isn't even difficult enough to earn the '"souls" title like that. If you're having trouble with Belmont's Curse then any Souls game would truly kick your ass.

As for what "feels like a Castlevania game"?

The franchise has gone through many changes over the years and experiment with many different gameplay styles. So yeah you could do an open world Castlevania game that totally feels like Castlevania game. Just to make it feel like Castlevania all you'd need is the following:

  • Dark but not grim-dark atmosphere

  • Good catchy music preferably classical sounding and a few Castlevania iconic tracks thrown in for good measure (Bloodly Tears, Theme of Simon, Vampire Killer, ect)

  • Castlevania iconic lore elements (Belmonts, Dracula, the Castlevania castle, ect)

  • Some clasic Castlevania types of enemies (skeletons, Medusa heads, axe armors, ect)

  • Some magic abilities or the classic Castlevania sub-weapons (holy water, cross boomerangs, axes, ect)

  • Dracula as a final or at least secret final boss and he needs to at least have two forms in the boss battle

An thats pretty much it.

Instead I’d love a Zelda Metroidvania

Zeldas are traditionally like top down metroid-vanias with mini-metroid-vanias (dungeons) nested inside.

There’s similar elements but not exactly the same. It’d be cool to see a Zelda game that takes place in an entire dungeon and be a full-on Metroidvania.

Nah it’s good as it is. That said 3D games where you can use a Whip as a weapon are pretty rare. And it can be cool.
I’m thinking of Darksiders, there’s one in Elden ring I think, there’s Indiana jones, probably others.

Brother Belmont's Curse ain't a Soulslike

The only thing this new game has in common with Souls-likes is the checkpoint system. Why do so many morons attribute every generic action game mechanic to Dark Souls? Or act like any game that's a little difficult is a Souls-like?

I wouldnt mind a game set in the Castlevania universe that's an open world RPG . Lotta potential for interesting stories

No. They should just keep on this track I think.

They should do a Castlevania that takes place in the year 3000 on the moon

And what? Summon all past Belmonts to host a tournament for a wish?

How about just in the 21st century, in an eclipse over Japan, starting a reincarnation of Dracula as the protagonist, an the protagonist doesn't know he is the reincarnation of Dracula, an he looks like a short haired Alucard, and you collect enemy abilities like Pokémon...

That would NEVER work
