Discussion / Question How come I see so many indie "ps1 graphics" game but I don't see people making games in the style of 2000-2010 games at all.

I know that a lot of people consider the ps1 era of graphics nostalgic or eerie which makes it fit for horror games and also is easy to replicate, especially if they're aiming for the nostalgic feeling. One thing I'm curious about though is how I don't see any modern projects trying to mimick the 2000-2010s era of games. it's hard for me to explain it exactly since I didn't experience it so I'll give a few examples of games whose graphics really caught my attention: Re4, Silent Hill 3, Shadow of the Colossus or like CoD Mw2 or Gta IV. One more notable example are the "piss filter games" or "fuckload bloom games (I'm looking for some games with fuckload bloom if anyone could recommend some.)". It just seems like a really cool looking and unique era of graphics to me and I wish I would've experienced it but my point is that a lot of people definitely experienced those during their childhood or teenage years and I'm surprised I don't see anyone trying to recreate the looks of those games in current times.

I'm sorry if it's a stupid question but it has been stagnating in the back of my mind for some time and I had to get it out. If there are modern indie projects or just more old game recommendations in general that fit my bad description I'd love to hear them aside for an answer to why people aren't trying to replicate the feeling of that era.

Discussion / Question Are there people here who finish games over several years and keep coming back, instead of rushing for the platinum?

I’m curious if I’m the only one. I don’t mean speedrunning or trophy hunting — I mean playing a game very slowly over months/years, taking long breaks, and periodically returning to the same playthrough. Not trying to finish ASAP, just enjoying the long-term process. Anyone else play like this? How do you keep track of where you left off, and do you feel pressured by the whole “finish fast, get platinum, move on” culture?

Discussion / Question Dying Light or Days Gone?

I’m wanting to play a post apocalyptic/ zombie game with at least a relatively open world and survival/ crafting aspects. I would love something that’s atmospheric, that I can really sink into, but not SUPER punishing. A satisfying progression pace would be nice too.

Dying Light and Days Gone were the first two that popped up on Google. Should I go with one of these or is there a better option out there? Thanks!

Edit: I’m on ps4

Discussion / Question Games similar to the board game Sidereal Confluence?

My girlfriend and I looooove Sidereal Confluence, and it is probably our favorite board game. She is not as much into video games, but it can be hard to get enough people together to play Sidereal Confluence regularly, so I'm looking for a video game that is similar that we could both play.

It being competitive or cooperative are both fine, just wondering if you guys know of anything that scratches a similar itch!

Discussion / Question Maybe still honeymoon period, but will the final boss in Onimusha: Way of the Sword make it to a lot of people's best bosses of all time list, you think?

I think so. It reminds me so much of Issin, the sword saint, in Sekiro.

It's brutal, but also fair. he doesn't have a single move that's unfair, and you can learn how to counter it. It's also a really long fight, making it a test of stamina. He also has a really fun personality.

Hello!

My , 6 year old is playing Astro bot and having tons of fun. But I see she's sometimes struggling with the controller being too big. Hard to reach buttons at the same time and what not.

Just curious if you know any smaller controllers and have any recommendations?

Discussion / Question Do you play multiple games at once or focus on one game at a time?

Now for me personally I have this weird habit of only playing, reading,or watching entertainment that I’m in the mood for. When I mean in the mood for I mean if I I’m craving that specific genre. For example if I’m in the mood for a zombie apocalypse game I’ll boot that up even if I’m in the middle of a hack and slash game like God of War III or something. This leads to me having like 10 or more active games I’m playing at one time with cycling between them when the mood strikes me. Sometimes I’ll play one game consistently but most of the time I’m cycling through many. This could lead to sometimes not finishing a game but that’s rare as I usually come back to it at some point but it definitely has happened unfortunately.

Discussion / Question How often has this happened to you in stealth games?

  • You sneak up to the enemy.
  • You are an 0.1 inch from the enemy.
  • The enemy turns around AT THE VERY LAST SECOND before you assassinate the enemy.
  • Chaos ensues
  • You reload the save.
  • You spend the next 2 hours trying to figure out how best assassinate the enemy.

Discussion / Question Games in their Prime

What current multiplayer game is in its prime?

I feel that every big multiplayer game hitting the top charts is 5+ years out of its prime. Overwatch, Fortnite, Call of Duty, Valorant, League, and many others are out of it but still massive.

Discussion / Question What's a game that deviates drastically from the conventions of its genre?

Post image

For example, the first Blasphemous is a metroidvania without any conventional movement upgrades; your only traversal abilities come in the form of Relics, which can only manipulate the environment around you or alter your properties rather than expand your moveset, that you need to do some extremely thorough exploration and/or sidequests to find. They aren't even mandatory for main story progression at all, which makes the game feel like its own beast where you must truly dig deep into Cvstodia to discover its secrets with no instruction or aid from the game design.

It's extremely obtuse at times and doesn't tell you much about what you can find or how to find it, but that makes for an incredibly rewarding gameplay loop in its own way, and along with the beautifully violent Spanish Catholic art direction, a world that feels truly alive and ripped straight from a forgotten tome from the Middle Ages.

Blasphemous 2 is a much more traditional metroidvania with all the genre's usual trappings, and it does all of it exceptionally well, but there's something so special about the uniqueness and weirdness of the first game that I don't think can be easily replicated.

Discussion / Question How do you all find new games?

Steam is in my opinion terrible when it comes to finding new upcoming games and all that, OR I'm just too dumb to understand it which also is possible of course. Does anyone know how to find new upcoming games by any chance (with no Anime, UwU and all that), more like survival games, FPS... horror etcetera.

Discussion / Question What games feature unpredictability in the gameplay-progression binding?

It doesn't need to have multiple branching story plots but the structure of the dynamic environment (i.e. extensionally unto strategic developments, and intentionally parameters of tactical movements by non-player characters and objects external to player and perhaps even equippables) should come with degree of nondeterminible antifixedneaa: not completely unpredictable or utterly random, nor merely probabilistic or quasi-random, but with actual weighty events (unto progression of the quantified game by the player) from scale tiny to huge that don't follow narrow parameters. In other words, course of the game be prone to meander in different ways subtle and grandiose, nuanced and jarring, that don't follow a predefined nor even loosely predictable way, for reasons not that might or kightn't be affected by player's decisions but which zhe cannot guarantee following some certain path as such.

I've been trying to install Red Dead Redemption 2, since last night, and it keeps showing this message. It also did this with other games I installed, several times. Is my PS5 getting fried, or could this just be due to my internet?

Discussion / Question Unpopular opinion: nostalgia is carrying some video games harder than people want to admit

Sometimes I wonder how much of a game's reputation comes from its actual quality and how much comes from when people played it.

A game you grew up with can feel untouchable because you associate it with a certain time in your life. But if someone played it for the first time today, without those memories attached, would they have the same experience?

I'm not saying older games are bad. Plenty have aged incredibly well. I'm curious how many games people defend because they're genuinely great and how many benefit from nostalgia.
