Abdul El Sayed on JD Vance calling him "little weasel": "They're carnival barkers, you hear them, too many of them are Ohio. It's funny. JD Vance called me a little weasel. I'm like no, no, no. What you’re talking about is a f***ing wolverine. You can take your Buckeye and shove it somewhere else."

Bro, I work 1500 miles away from the two states and have 400 years of history to cover in a year.

Can we really call it "neglect" that I don't get to cover every fun history tidbit I want to?

Soooo, what kind of fun local centric history tidbits do you have to offer?

Plenty. Just recently we discussed the Bunker Hill Mine event where during a labor dispute, 1000 miners hijacked a train, loaded it full of dynamite, rode it as a massive group, and drove it into the company mill and detonated the dynamite, exploding it. Then, in 1905, the governor of Idaho was assassinated by dynamite strapped to his front gate. When he opened it, it triggered, instantly killing him.

A little before that, when we were talking immigration in the late 1800s and the Chinese Exclusion Act, I asked them if anyone knew why Garden City was named as such (it's a city literally touching Boise). No one knew, so I explained that it was named after the Chinatown that had developed there outside of Boise, referring to the "Chinese Gardens". A major street through the valley is named Chinden, but almost no one knows why. It is the center road of Garden City, and is a shortening of "CHINese garDENs".

Boise doesn't have very much of a Chinese community left (it's very small, but present) because the collapse of mining towns and local discrimination drove many out of the area in the 1900s.

Edit: some typos

I'm glad you enjoyed it! My students definitely loved it as I painted the scene of 1000 riotous miners swarming a train and riding it like a bat out of hell to go blow up their company's property and cheer and drink while watching!

Yes, we can. There's gotta be a way for you to slow down time so that you can fit more material into a year.

I'd love that. Instead, I have to be content witj 5 or 10 minute asides to build connections and build engagement for a lot of the stuff I'd love to get deep in the weeds about. Like I'd really love to get into the history of Morse (and his talking credit for work and development done by others), rhe development of communications infrastructure, and the insane story of the first Trans-Atlantic Cable when we talk about technology improvements in the 1800s. But I don't have time.

Morse did not develop Morse code. His system was a completely unusable mess where every word had a set number and the massive codebook was organized alphabetically, not by frequency of usage. It was Alfred Vail who designed the system we know as Morse Code. Vail also designed the key and register for telegrams systems. Morse took all yhe credit due to patent contracts, forced Vail out, became insanely rich, and then used his fame and money to push for horribly bigoted and rascist ideals. Vail died unrecognized and poor, receiving almost no financial benefit for his work. Morse code should be called Vail Code.

Wow, I never knew that about Morse! Sounds very similar to the dynamic between Tesla and Eddison. Although, I don't think they were ever really colleagues, more rivals if anything. Maybe Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs make a better analogy.

Here's an awesome series about the whole situation, from Morse to the many failures of the Transatlantic cable. It's a fascinating watch.
